Purpose – This study examines the effects of expatriate transfer on foreign affiliate’s labor productivity. Design/methodology – Using Korean-owned foreign affiliate-level data, we estimate the effect of expatriate transfer on foreign affiliate’s labor productivity using the system generalized method of moments model. We also consider foreign affiliate- and host country-specific contingencies and test how they are associated with expatriates in enhancing foreign affiliate’s labor productivity. Findings – We consider foreign production intensity and cultural distance between the home (i.e., South Korea) and host countries as key contingencies that influence the effect of expatriates on foreign affiliate’s labor productivity. We find that expatriates are effective in enhancing the labor productivity of less production-intensive foreign affiliates. This effect is strengthened as expatriates are deployed to countries that share cultural similarities with the home country. Originality/value – Considering that previous studies provide mixed results on the effect of expatriates, our findings suggest that foreign affiliate-specific operational orientation and cultural distance should be considered jointly to understand the true effect of expatriate staffing on foreign affiliate performance.
Global Production vs. Inventory Supply and Financial Performance
Seungrae Lee,Seung Jae Park 한국경영과학회 2016 Management Science and Financial Engineering Vol.22 No.1
We analyze how firms’ global production activities affect their inventory supply and financial performance in regards to its production location. For the analysis, we use information on global production quantities of 3,076 Korean multinational firms that operate business in Europe and Asia through foreign direct investment (FDI) from 2006 to 2013. Our estimation results show that an increase in global production ratio, measured by global production/total production, decreases inventory supply and financial performance of firms that produce in European countries, while it decreases financial performance of firms that produce in Asian countries. Although our results indicate that global production decreases financial performance of firms that produce in Europe and Asia, we find that its negative effects on financial performance are different based on the market demand uncertainty.
Anti-Dumping Duty and Firm Heterogeneity:
Seungrae Lee,Joo Yeon Sun 대외경제정책연구원 2013 Working Papers Vol.2013 No.1
This paper examines the imposition of Anti-dumping (AD) duties on imported products in Korea. We use panel data for Korean firms between 2002 and 2010 and estimate the changed firm-level productivity of domestic producers before and after the imposition of duties. In contrast to recent research analyzing the effects of AD measures on firm performance, we find evidence of a decrease in estimated productivity of protected domestic producers during the AD protection period. We then discuss the channels behind our results and find that the average productivity losses are not driven by the changes in company account variables that influence firm productivity during the protection period. Instead, we find that AD protection has heterogeneous treatment effects on firm productivity depending on the market structure.

It has been reported that overloaded vehicles have caused critical damages on roads and/or bridges. Therefore, corresponding regulations were put in force about the overloaded vehicles to overcome this problem. In this context, this paper investigates the possibilities for development of a new enforcement system for the overweight vehicles.

Mother Tongue can be said to be a poetic novel or long prose poem that combines the themes of Latina spirituality, erotics, and activism. This novel, which embodies the author’s identity and vision as a political activist, is subversive in that it depicts a colorful decolonial Latina single mother-the Virgin Mary-who desires and acts while resisting the bleached image of the Holy Virgin Mary from colonial imaginary. This study reads Demetria Martinez’s postmodern coming of age novel as the Conocimiento Narrative of Gloria Anzaldua, a Latina-style rite of healing and development and focuses particularly on the spiritual journey of the Millennial Goddess-to-be. The Conocimiento Narrative to acquire the aura of the immortal Guadalupe, transforming from the victim to the spiritual activist, naturally resonates with the author’s poem “Hail Mary.” In addition, the herstory of Mother Tongue rewrites the history of the Holy Family and converges it with the aesthetic portrait of the Millennial Virgin Mary.
