      • New Record of The Leek Moth, Acrolepiopsis nagaimo (Lepidoptera:Acrolepiidae) in Korea

        Acrolepiopsis nagaimo (Yasuda, 2000) belonging to the family Acrolepiidae (Lepidoptera) is newly discovered in Korea. The species was first collected wild at Wol-ak-san [Mt.] a few years ago and they were recently found to infest Chinese yam, Dioscoreabatatas at a Chinese yam experimental field of the Institute for Bioresources Research located at Andong. Diagnostic characteristics of the adult are described and photographs of adult and male and female genitalia are provided.

      • Selectivity of Neuromodulatory Projections from the Basal Forebrain and Locus Ceruleus to Primary Sensory Cortices

        <P>Acetylcholine and noradrenaline are major neuromodulators that affect sensory processing in the cortex. Modality-specific sensory information is processed in defined areas of the cortex, but it is unclear whether cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain (BF) and noradrenergic neurons in the locus ceruleus (LC) project to and modulate these areas in a sensory modality-selective manner. Here, we mapped BF and LC projections to different sensory cortices of the mouse using dual retrograde tracing. We found that while the innervation of cholinergic neurons into sensory cortices is predominantly modality specific, the projections of noradrenergic neurons diverge onto multiple sensory cortices. Consistent with this anatomy, optogenetic activation of cholinergic neurons in BF subnuclei induces modality-selective desynchronization in specific sensory cortices, whereas activation of noradrenergic LC neurons induces broad desynchronization throughout multiple sensory cortices. Thus, wedemonstrate a clear distinction in the organization and function of cholinergic BF and noradrenergic LC projections into primary sensory cortices: cholinergic BF neurons are highly selective in their projections and modulation of specific sensory cortices, whereas noradrenergic LC neurons broadly innervate and modulate multiple sensory cortices.</P>

      • Behavioral and Neuroimaging Evidence for Facial Emotion Recognition in Elderly Korean Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Frontotemporal Dementia

        <P><B>Background:</B> Facial emotion recognition (FER) is impaired in individuals with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) when compared to healthy older adults. Since deficits in emotion recognition are closely related to caregiver burden or social interactions, researchers have fundamental interest in FER performance in patients with dementia.</P><P><B>Purpose:</B> The purpose of this study was to identify the performance profiles of six facial emotions (i.e., fear, anger, disgust, sadness, surprise, and happiness) and neutral faces measured among Korean healthy control (HCs), and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), AD, and FTD. Additionally, the neuroanatomical correlates of facial emotions were investigated.</P><P><B>Methods:</B> A total of 110 (33 HC, 32 MCI, 32 AD, 13 FTD) older adult participants were recruited from two different medical centers in metropolitan areas of South Korea. These individuals underwent an FER test that was used to assess the recognition of emotions or absence of emotion (neutral) in 35 facial stimuli. Repeated measures two-way analyses of variance were used to examine the distinct profiles of emotional recognition among the four groups. We also performed brain imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) on the participants to examine the associations between FER scores and gray matter volume.</P><P><B>Results:</B> The mean score of negative emotion recognition (i.e., fear, anger, disgust, and sadness) clearly discriminated FTD participants from individuals with MCI and AD and HC [<I>F</I>(3,106) = 10.829, <I>p</I> < 0.001, η<SUP>2</SUP> = 0.235], whereas the mean score of positive emotion recognition (i.e., surprise and happiness) did not. A VBM analysis showed negative emotions were correlated with gray matter volume of anterior temporal regions, whereas positive emotions were related to gray matter volume of fronto-parietal regions.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B> Impairment of negative FER in patients with FTD is cross-cultural. The discrete neural correlates of FER indicate that emotional recognition processing is a multi-modal system in the brain. Focusing on the negative emotion recognition is a more effective way to discriminate healthy aging, MCI, and AD from FTD in older Korean adults.</P>

      • Italochrysa nigrovenosa (Neuroptera:Chrysopidae) new to Korea.

        Study of the Korean Chrysopidae has been scarce and only 11 species in 6 genera have been recorded so far(Checklist of Korean Insect, 2010). Genus Italochrysa has been a monotypic genus in Korea with I. japonica. Here we report Italochrysa nigrovenosa as another species of Italochrysa found in Korea. Images of adult and it’s genitalia information are provided.

        글로벌 IT기업의 투명성 활동에 관한 헌법적 검토

        국가권력의 행사와 관련하여 투명성이 강조되고 있음에도 불구하고 그 헌법적인 의미와 내용을 면밀히 분석하고 투명성 확보를 위한 제도적 대응방안을 탐색 하는 본격적인 논의는 아직까지 충분히 이루어지지 않은 것으로 보인다. 현대 민주국가의 헌법은 기본권 보장에 기여하기 위한 통치구조와 통치작용을 합리적으로 수행하기 위한 민주적 정당성과 절차적 정당성의 확보를 필수적인 요소로 한 다. 특히 지식정보사회에서 투명성은 한 국가 내에서 요구되는 원칙으로 한정되지 않는다. 구글을 비롯한 글로벌 IT 기업들의 투명성 보고서 발간은 지식정보사 회에서 국가의 권한, 자율규제를 위한 기업의 역할, 정보주체의 개인정보를 포함 한 권리보호 등과 맞물리는 출발점을 의미한다. 그러나 투명성 보고서가 단순한 공개에 그친다면 충분히 그 기능을 다하고 있다고 보기는 어려울 것이다. 의사결 정이나 그에 따른 행사의 결과가 투명해야 한다는 결과의 투명성, 의사결정이 이 루어지는 방식이 투명해야 한다는 절차의 투명성, 결과만의 공개나 형식적 절차 만의 준수가 아닌 전체 결정과정이 정당하게 공개된 상태에서 이루어지는 것과 열람권이 확실하고 충분하게 보장되는 것을 의미하는 내용의 투명성, 일정한 의사결정과 그에 따라 발생하는 결과에 대하여 책임의 소재를 분명하게 하고, 나아 가 그에게 책임을 물을 수 있는 제도적 장치를 마련하는 것을 의미하는 책임의 투명성이라는 관점에서 투명성 보고서상 공개의 기준과 범위, 내용 등을 검토하 여 결정해야 한다. 네이버, 다음카카오를 포함한 (글로벌) IT기업들은 단순히 투 명성 보고서의 발간을 통하여 기업 관련 내용의 일정부분 공개하고 알리는 것에 그치는 것이 아니라, 이와 더불어 정보주체의 개인정보처리와 기업경영의 투명성 을 높이는 방향으로 나아가야 한다. 특히 국내 투명성 보고서 발간 리더로서 네이버와 다음카카오가 상호간의 투명성 보고서 비교 검토 및 해외 투명성 보고서 수준을 넘어서는 질적 향상을 도모하는 작업을 통해 국내 이용자들이 해외 각 국 의 어떤 이용자들보다 안전하고 적정한 인터넷 환경을 향유할 수 있도록 힘써야 할 것이고, 이러한 투명성 확보가 곧 가장 큰 기업의 경쟁력이 될 것임을 잊지 말아야 할 것이다. 네이버와 다음카카오의 투명성보고서는 한 IT기업의 보고서에 불과한 것이 아니다. 이러한 보고서의 발간은 지식정보사회에서 국가의 권한, 자 율규제를 위한 기업의 역할, 정보주체의 개인정보를 포함한 권리보호 등과 맞물 리는 출발점을 의미한다. One of the terms that is most used in literature regarding decision making processes in national organizations, relationships between national organizations and citizens, and relationships between nations or between companies in the world the most is “transparency”. Transparency excludes disparate and irrational elements in the decision making process, thus, making interested parties participate in this decision making process and hence serves the function of acquiring democratic validity and reliability. Request for transparency largely entails inquiries into equal participation in the decision making process and disclosure of major information. Therefore, transparency has been regarded as a core element for obtaining validity in decision making processes in the public field and also is extremely relevant to maintaining in stabilizing relationships when discussing certain issues. IT companies including Naver and/or Daum Cacao not only partially disclose and notify company-related contents through publication of the transparency report but also pursues to improve the transparency in personal information process of information providers and company management. Transparency reports of Naver and Daum Cacao are not a simple report of one particular IT company. Publication of such a report indicates a starting point in connection with national right in knowledge/information society, role of a company for autonomous regulation, and right protection including personal information. Acquisition of transparency of a country or a company in knowledge/ information society has become an assignment that must be proceeded and achieved. Especially, IT companies must be well aware of that acquisition of the transparency from reinforcement of rights of information providers including personal information protection is one of the most important factors in the management for making a company survive.

      • Description of spongilla fly, Sisyra nikkoana (Neuroptera: Sisyridae)

        The family Sisyridae is very unique in that their larvae are aquatic and feed on sponges. The family has not been described in Korea until one species, Sisyra nikkoana (Navas), of Sisyridae was reported in the Illustrated Book of Aquatic Invertebrates in Agricultural Ecosystem (Rural Development Administration, 2008). However, this short description includes a misidentified adult image, and here we provide its full description in morphology with its wing pattern and male genitalia, as well as its COI barcoding information. We suggest its Korean name, 해면풀잠자리(해면풀잠자리과) as they feed on sponges.

      • Novel four-sided neural probe fabricated by a thermal lamination process of polymer films

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Ideally, neural probes should have channels with a three-dimensional (3-D) configuration to record the activities of 3-D neural circuits. Many types of 3-D neural probes have been developed; however, most of them were designed as an array of multiple shanks with electrodes located along one side of the shanks.</P> <P><B>New method</B></P> <P>We developed a novel liquid crystal polymer (LCP)-based neural probe with four-sided electrodes. This probe has electrodes on four sides of the shank, <I>i.e.</I>, the front, back and two sidewalls. To generate the proposed configuration of the electrodes, we used a thermal lamination process involving LCP films and laser micromachining.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>The proposed novel four-sided neural probe, was used to successfully perform <I>in vivo</I> multichannel neural recording in the mouse primary somatosensory cortex.</P> <P><B>Comparison with existing method</B></P> <P>The multichannel neural recording showed that the proposed four-sided neural probe can record spiking activities from a more diverse neuronal population than single-sided probes. This was confirmed by a pairwise Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson’s r) analysis and a cross-correlation analysis.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>The developed four-sided neural probe can be used to record various signals from a complex neural network.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We developed a novel liquid crystal polymer (LCP)-based neural probe with four-sided electrodes. </LI> <LI> To generate the proposed configuration of the electrodes, we used a thermal lamination process involving LCP films and laser micromachining. </LI> <LI> The developed four-sided neural probe can record spiking activities from a more diverse neuronal population than single-sided probes. </LI> </UL> </P>
