Low Diastolic Blood Pressure and Cognitive Decline in Korean Elderly People: The Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia

        Dongyun Lee,Bong-Jo Kim,Ji Won Han,Tae Hui Kim,Kyung Phil Kwak,Kayoung Kim,Shin Gyeom Kim,Jeong Lan Kim,Tae Hyun Kim,Seok Woo Moon,Jae Young Park,Joon Hyuk Park,Seonjeong Byun,Seung Wan Suh,Ji Young S 대한신경정신의학회 2020 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.17 No.1

Objective: Cardiovascular diseases are representative risk factors for the onset of cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to confirm the relationship between diastolic blood pressure and cognitive function in elderly people in Korea. Methods: Data from subjects who were enrolled in the prospective Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia were used in this study. Data from 701 subjects whose diastolic blood pressure range did not change (≤79 mm Hg or ≥80 mm Hg) over 2 years were analyzed. To analyze the differences in cognitive function between the groups at the 2-year follow-up, an analysis of covariance was performed with covariates, which were significantly different between the two groups, and the baseline cognitive function. Results: Significant differences were observed between the two groups, and the mean scores on the constructional praxis (η2=0.010) and word list recall tests (η2=0.018) in the diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mm Hg group were higher than those in the diastolic blood pressure ≤79 mm Hg group at the 2-year follow-up. Conclusion: These results indicate that maintaining a DBP below 79 mm Hg presents a greater risk of cognitive decline in Korean elderly people.

        Ji Won Han,Tae Hui Kim,Kyung Phil Kwak,Kayoung Kim,Bong Jo Kim,Shin Gyeom Kim,Jeong Lan Kim,Tae Hyun Kim,Seok Woo Moon,Jae Young Park,Joon Hyuk Park,Seonjeong Byun,Seung Wan Suh,Ji Young Seo,Yoonseop 대한신경정신의학회 2018 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.15 No.8

Objective_Due to an unprecedented rate of population aging, South Korea is facing a dementia epidemic. For this reason, the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD) was launched in 2009 with support from the Korean Health Industry Development Institute to investigate the epidemiology, biopsychosocial risk factors, and outcomes of dementia and dementia-related conditions. Methods_The KLOSCAD is the first nationwide multi-center population-based prospective cohort study. In October 2010, 12,694 individuals were randomly sampled from residents aged 60 years or older who lived in 13 districts across South Korea. In the baseline assessment, which was conducted from November 2010 through October 2012, 6,818 (53.7%) individuals participated. Follow-up assessments have been conducted every two years, with the first follow-up assessment conducted between November 2012 and October 2014, and the second between November 2014 and October 2016. The third is now in progress, and will span from November 2016 to October 2018. Diagnosis of cognitive disorders, neuropsychological battery, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, activities of daily living, physical and neurologic examination and laboratory tests, life styles, quality of life, and identification of death were evaluated in each assessment. Results_The cumulative drop-out rate at the second follow-up assessment was 38.7%. Dementia and mild cognitive impairment were 5.0% and 27.0%, respectively. Conclusion_The KLOSCAD may provide strong scientific evidence for advancing the fight against dementia both in Korea and globally.

Normal-But-Low Serum Folate Levels and the Risks for Cognitive Impairment

        Soomin Jang,Ji Won Han,Jiyoon Shin,Tae Hui Kim,Kyung Phil Kwak,Kayoung Kim,Bong Jo Kim,김신겸,Jeong Lan Kim,Taehyun Kim,Seok Woo Moon,Jae Young Park,Joon Hyuk Park,Seonjeong Byun,Seung Wan Suh,Ji-Yeong S 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.7

Objective This study aimed to examine the association between normal-but-low folate levels and cognitive function in the elderly population using a prospective cohort study. Methods We analyzed 3,910 participants whose serum folate levels were within the normal reference range (1.5–16.9 ng/mL) at baseline evaluation in the population-based prospective cohort study named the “Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia.” The association between baseline folate quartile categories and baseline cognitive disorders [mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia] was examined using binary logistic regression analysis adjusting for confounding variables. The risks of incident MCI and dementia associated with the decline of serum folate level during a 4-year follow-up period were examined using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results The lowest quartile group of serum folate (≥1.5, ≤5.9 ng/mL) showed a higher risk of cognitive disorders than did the highest quartile group at baseline evaluation (odds ratio 1.314, p=0.012). Over the 4 years of follow-up, the risk of incident dementia was 2.364 times higher among subjects whose serum folate levels declined from the 2nd–4th quartile group to the 1st quartile than among those for whom it did not (p=0.031). Conclusion Normal-but-low serum folate levels were associated with the risk of cognitive disorders in the elderly population, and a decline to normal-but-low serum folate levels was associated with incident dementia. Maintaining serum folate concentration above 5.9 ng/mL may be beneficial for cognitive status.

Showcasing the Athlete Body: A Qualitative Study for Understanding Consumers’ Expectations about Sexualized Female Images on the Leading Media Brands

( Kayoung Kim ),( Mark Jaewon Chang ) 한국체육학회 2021 International journal of human movement science Vol.15 No.3

Leading media brands present sexualized content of female athletes in order to increase their sales. Sports media decision-makers believe that sexual content can make money and meet the expectations of consumers. The main objective of the current study was to examine consumer expectations and the concerns of female athletes. The authors utilized critical feminist theory and successfully navigated how female athletics discuss sexual images. We conducted in-depth photographic interviews with sixteen student-athletes using images of sports celebrities from the ESPN Body Issue and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The results indicated that sexualized images fail to meet the expectations of female athletes and can negatively impact media consumers and younger audiences.

      • Unpredictability of soft tissue changes after camouflage treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusion with maximum anterior retraction using miniscrews

        Kim, Kayoung,Choi, Sung-Hwan,Choi, Eun-Hee,Choi, Yoon-Jeong,Hwang, Chung-Ju,Cha, Jung-Yul The Angle Orthodontist 2017 The Angle orthodontist Vol.87 No.2

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Objective: To compare soft and hard tissue responses based on the degree of maxillary incisor retraction using maximum anchorage in patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion.</P><P>Materials and Methods: This retrospective study sample was divided into moderate retraction (&lt;8.0 mm; n = 28) and maximum retraction (≥8.0 mm; n = 29) groups based on the amount of maxillary incisor retraction after extraction of the maxillary and mandibular first premolars for camouflage treatment. Pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalograms were analyzed.</P><P>Results: There were 2.3 mm and 3.0 mm of upper and lower lip retraction, respectively, in the moderate group; and 4.0 mm and 5.3 mm, respectively, in the maximum group. In the moderate group, the upper lip was most influenced by posterior movement of the cervical point of the maxillary incisor (β = 0.94). The lower lip was most influenced by posterior movement of B-point (β = 0.84) and the cervical point of the mandibular incisor (β = 0.83). Prediction was difficult in the maximum group; no variable showed a significant influence on upper lip changes. The lower lip was highly influenced by posterior movement of the cervical point of the maxillary incisor (β = 0.50), but this correlation was weak in the maximum group.</P><P>Conclusions: Posterior movement of the cervical point of the anterior teeth is necessary for increased lip retraction. However, periodic evaluation of the lip profile is needed during maximum retraction of the anterior teeth because of limitations in predicting soft tissue responses.</P>

      • Autophagy activation decreases AGEs in skin cells in vitro and ex vivo

( Kayoung Shin ),( Yeonjae Kim ),( Sungwoo Kim ),( Sekyoo Jeong ),( Hwa-jee Chung ),( Keedon Park ),( Sungha Hwang ),( Dayeon Song ),( Minkyung Shin ),( Dabin Jeong ),( Jeong Ho Park ) 한국피부장벽학회 2023 한국피부장벽학회지 Vol.25 No.2

While the initial generation of AGEs (advanced glycation end products) usually takes place in a time-lapse of hours, it is reported that the complete formation of AGEs after the rearrangement and cross-liking with other proteins requires weeks to years under physiological conditions. However, in pathological conditions such as hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and higher temperature, it can be accelerated up to hour-scale reaction. While AGEs can mechanically and/or biochemically alters the protein and tissue structures and functions, AGEs can also elicit downstream cellular signaling through binding to the RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products). Activation of RAGE induces NF-κB and MAPK pathways and results in the release of various cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In skin, along with the direct ultraviolet irradiation, exposure to particulate matters (PMs) or smoking can also accelerate the formation of AGEs, which subsequently induces irregular pigmentation, wrinkle formation, and skin barrier dysfunction. Based on the deleterious effects of AGEs on skin aging, significant efforts have been exerted to develop anti-AGE molecules. Most of the currently available anti-AGE molecules, however, focus on the prevention of AGEs through the anti-oxidant property of molecules. Autophagy is a cellular mechanism to maintain cellular homeostasis role by removing dysfunctional cellular organelles and proteins. Recently, it was reported that AGEs removal can be stimulated by autophagy activator treatment in human epidermal keratinocytes. In this study, using a newly developed compound derivative with autophagy stimulating activity and anti-oxidant capacity, we investigated the modulation of AGEs formation and elimination by autophagy activator in vitro and ex vivo. In cultured human epidermal keratinocytes, high glucose- or glyoxal-induced AGEs formation was attenuated by autophagy activator treatment. Removal of BSA-AGE by keratinocytes was also accelerated by autophagy activator. Similar activities were also observed in ex vivo human skin explant model. Interestingly, epidermal expression of RAGE was also down-regulated by autophagy activator treatment. These results suggest that autophagy signaling is closely related to AGEs formation and elimination, and stimulation of autophagic flux can be a new regimen for anti-AGEs therapeutics.

Masculine or Metrosexual? The Critical Perspectives on the Media Display of Male Athletes

( Kayoung Kim ) 한국체육학회 2020 International journal of human movement science Vol.14 No.2

The critical feminist perspective provides understanding of the female-centered viewpoint to explore the media display of male athletes. By understanding the different gender perspectives on the media display, this study explores how female athletes interpret the media images of male sports celebrities in the mainstream magazines. This study further investigates the gendered sexualization in the media representation of athletes. A photo interviewing with sixteen female athletes conducted to explore the male athletes’ media display in the men’s lifestyle magazines. Findings suggest that three different men’s lifestyle magazines represent different forms of masculinities depend on the purpose and target audiences, although hegemonic masculinity is woven throughout all magazines. Female athletes immediately recognized the differences in the sexualization of male bodies by comparing with female athletes in a similar type of magazines such as Fitness and ESPN The magazine’s body issue. This study provided rich insights into how female athletes think about different types of masculinities and the gendered sexualization in a similar type of media outlet.

      • Estimation of power outage costs in the industrial sector of South Korea

Kim, Kayoung,Cho, Youngsang Elsevier 2017 Energy Policy Vol.101 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study estimates the power outage costs of the industrial sector by not only considering production loss but also the customer's inconvenience and various damages. For the estimation, we used a Type II Tobit model with firm-level survey data for 430 firms, and considered factors affecting the outage cost such as outage duration, average annual sales, and average monthly electricity consumption, among others. In addition, we analyzed the effect of the preannouncement of a rolling blackout on outage cost savings, and also examined the value of an emergency generator. From the estimation results, we found that the estimated outage cost is 1.24–1.3 times greater than the simple value of lost load (VoLL), and this difference increases when companies have emergency generator. The commercial and public service sector can reduce the outage cost the most compared to other sectors when a preannouncement is provided, and operating emergency generators can lower the outage cost in these sectors. Finally, we confirm that South Korea's rolling blackout in the predetermined order by the industry is appropriate to minimize the outage costs for the national economy when the outage is preannounced, but is not appropriate when there is no preannouncement.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We estimate the power outage costs of the industrial sector in South Korea. </LI> <LI> We analyze the factors affecting the outage costs using a Type II Tobit model. </LI> <LI> Estimated outage cost is 1.24–1.3 times greater than the simple VoLL-based one. </LI> <LI> Preannouncement and emergency generators could reduce outage costs. </LI> </UL> </P>
