        Dietary Supplementation of Carob and Whey Modulates Gut Morphology, Hemato-Biochemical Indices, and Antioxidant Biomarkers in Rabbits

        This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the carob powder (CP) and sweet whey powder (WhP) inclusion into weaning feed on the gut morphology, hemato-biochemical parameters, and antioxidant biomarkers. The addition of 10 g/kg (basal diet +10 g/kg of CP, of WhP) or the mixture (5 g/kg of CP and 5 g/kg of WhP) in the rabbit's standard diet was assessed. A total of 40 weaned New Zealand White rabbits (4 weeks old) was distributed according to body weight (BW) into four treatments (n = 10) and the feed additives were provided for 7 weeks. Tissue samples and blood were obtained after slaughter. Final BW, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, intestinal morphology, and carcass dressing were positively affected by CP–WhP treatments compared with the control diet. Also, CP–WhP treatments significantly increased total proteins, calcium and iron levels, fecal cholesterol excretion, total antioxidants capacity, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in different tissues and significantly decreased total cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose in blood serum. These changes were associated with a diminution of blood tumor necrosis factor alpha, lipid peroxidation, and carbonyl proteins in rabbit tissues. Both the additives separately and especially in the mix may enhance productive performance, protein profile, gut function, immunity, and antioxidant activity, with reducing lipid peroxidation, essential inflammatory mediator, and protein-carbonyl residues of growing rabbits. These findings suggest that CP–WhP dietary supplementation provides novel insights into a variety of bioactive compound mixtures with different beneficial modes of actions.

        Diprosopus, craniorachischisis, arthrogryposis, and other associated anomalies in a stillborn lamb

        Congenital malformations with multiple anomalies have been described infrequently in the veterinary literature. A stillborn male crossbred lamb with diprosopus, craniorachischisis, and arthrogryposis was examined macroscopically and histopathologically in this study. The left head was smaller than the right head. Micrencephaly, agnathia, and a rudimentary tongue, which was adherent to the palate, were present in the left head. Micrencephaly, brachygnathia superior, and cleft palate were present in the right head. Cerebellar agenesis and spinal cord hypoplasia were observed. The cerebrums and the spinal cord were covered with a tapering membranous structure. Neural and dermal tissues were noted to intervene upon microscopic examination of this structure. Disorganization of neurons was observed in both cerebrums, though it was more severe in the left one. This case demonstrates many congenital defects occurring together in a lamb.

        LUBRICATING PERFORMANCE OF CARBON NANOTUBES IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES – ENGINE TEST RESULTS FOR CNT ENRICHED OIL

        The main purpose of this research is to reduce friction losses by adding carbon nanotubes to engine oil. Extremely favorable tribological properties of carbon nanotubes have been extensively studied on the microscopic scale and using tribometers, have not yet been verified in the engine. Enriching oil with nanotubes can lead to significant, exceeding 7 %, reduction in the motoring torque of the engine at low crankshaft rotational speed. The phenomena associated with the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the engine are stated and discussed. It has been shown that the oil shear during normal operation of the engine can effectively improve the dispersion of nanotubes. At the same time the oil filtration system removes agglomerates of nanotubes very quickly.

        Impact of postoperative complications on clinical and economic consequences in pancreatic surgery

        Purpose: Patients who develop complications consume a disproportionately large share of available resources in surgery; therefore the attention of healthcare funders focuses on the economic impact of complications. The main objective of this work was to assess the clinical and economic impact of postoperative complications in pancreatic surgery, and furthermore to assess risk factors for increased costs. Methods: In all, 161 consecutive patients underwent pancreatic resection. The costs of the treatment were determined and analyzed. Results: The overall morbidity rate was 53.4%, and the in-hospital mortality rate was 3.7%. The median of costs for all patients without complication was 3,963 Euro, whereas the median of costs for patients with at least one complication was significantly increased at 10,670 Euro (P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis American Society of Anesthesiologists ≥ 3 (P = 0.006), multivisceral resection (P < 0.001) and any complication (P < 0.001) were independently associated with increased costs. Conclusion: Postoperative complications are associated with an increase in mortality, length of hospital stay, and hospital costs. The treatment costs increase with the severity of the postoperative complications. Those factors that are known to increase the treatment costs in pancreatic resection should be considered when planning patients for surgery.

        Evaluation of gamma-ray and neutron attenuation properties of some polymers

        In the present work, we determined the gamma-ray attenuation characteristics of eight different polymers(Polyamide (Nylon 6) (PA-6), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinylidenechloride (PVDC), polyaniline(PANI), polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), polyphenylenesulfide (PPS), polypyrrole (PPy) and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)) using transmission geometry utilizing the high resolution HPGe detector anddifferent radioactive sources in the energy range 81e1333 keV. The experimental linear attenuationcoefficient values are compared with theoretical data (WinXCOM data). The linear attenuation coefficientof all polymers reduced quickly with the increase in energy, at the beginning, while decrease more slowlyin the region from 267 keV to 835 keV. The effective atomic number of PVDC and PTFE are comparativelyhigher than the Zeff of the remaining polymers, while PA-6 possesses the lowest effective atomic number. The half value layer results showed that PTFE (C2F4, highest density) is more effective to attenuate thegamma photons. Also, the theoretical results of macroscopic effective removal cross section for fastneutrons (PR) P were computed to investigate the neutron attenuation characteristics. It is found that theR values of the eight investigated polymers are close and ranged from 0.07058 cm 1 for PVDC to0.11510 cm 1 for PA-6.

        본 논문에서는 넓은 대역폭과 높은 이득을 갖는 단일요소 자기-전기 다이폴 안테나를 제안하였다. 제안된 안테나는 두 개의 금속판 연결을 통해 전기 다이폴의 매칭 주파수를 조절하여 대역폭을 개선하고, 금속 벽과 다이폴 안테나 사이의 간격 조절을 통해 자기 다이폴의 전류 분포를 변화시킴으로써 이득을 향상시킬 수 있다. 이러한 단일요소 안테나의 성능 개선은 제안된 안테나가 배열 형태로 구성되었을 때 더욱 높은 성능 지표를 기대할 수 있게 한다. This paper presents a single element magneto-electric dipole antenna that ensures a wide-bandwidth and high-gain. The return loss characteristics of the proposed antenna is improved by adjusting the matching frequency of the electric dipole through the connection of two metal plates. The realized gain of the antenna is enhanced by altering the current distribution of the magnetic dipole, which is changed by adjusting the distance between the metal wall and the dipole antenna. With these features, a higher performance array antenna for Ka-band can be achieved.

        Does the Use of Rocuronium-Sugammadex Instead of Succinylcholine in Electroconvulsive Therapy Affect Seizure Duration?

        Objective We compared retrospectively the seizure variables of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) patients after administration of rocuronium-sugammadex or succinylcholine as a muscle relaxant with propofol anesthesia.Methods The sample comprised 134 ECT patients. The mean age was 33.6±10.48 years. Anesthesia induction was provided with propofol one mg kg-intravenously (IV) followed by succinylcholine 0.5 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> IV (n=68) (Group S) or rocuronium 0.3 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> IV (n=66) (Group R). For patients who were given rocuronium, reversal of the residual neuromuscular block was accomplished with sugammadex (1.5 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> IV). First session seizure variables were compared between the two groups. We also presented the clinical outcome with Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) and overall adverse effects.Results EEG seizure durations in Group R (55.09±36.11 s) and Group S (47.00±26.33 s) were comparable and were not significantly different (p=0.432). The clinical efficacy of ECT measured by CGI-I in both groups was comparable (p=0.075). There were no major complications or death during or after ECT.Conclusion The results of this study show that the use of rocuronium-sugammadex as a neuromuscular blocker instead of succinylcholine during ECT with propofol anesthesia produces similar results in terms of seizure variables and clinical outcomes.

        Duplex positioning method for increasing the fatigue life of threaded connections under eccentric loading

        A new method, duplex positioning method DPM, to increase the fatigue lifetime of the threaded connection under eccentric loading is presented. When DPM is applied, the most damaged stud regions periodically are removed from risky positions by a change of the stud’s and nut’s mutual position in the axial direction alongside with a change of the stud’s position in respect to bending plane. The mathematical model for DPM enables us to predict its efficiency. To simulate the fatigue strength of the stud the following was used: Patterson’s and Kenny’s thread deflection factors, solutions for the distributions of the axial load and bending moment along the threads, Neuber’s method for the stress concentration factors in multiplier notches, Heywood’s formulas for the stress due to the thread flank loading and for the combined stresses, as well as the results of the photoelastic analysis of the araldite models under eccentric loading.
