        The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents and problems on astronomical areas in the elementary science textbooks. The results of analysis are as follows; 1. In objective analysis of the elementary science textbooks, completeness of unit was shown 50% in chapters, 67% in sections, and 100% in periods. 2. In inquiry activities, the total number of inquiry tasks are 108, among them observation has much more percentage(30%) than any other task. 3. The total inquiry index of the science textbooks are found about 73.4, this index is higher than 35-50 of NSTA. 4. The openness scale of the science textbooks is found to be scale 2 for all sections.

      • 암석에 관한 국민학교 아동의 개념

        The latest researchs show that students have their own preconceptions on natural phenomena through individual experiences before they learn about it in school. The purpose of this study is to investigate children's conceptions on rocks and the difference of conceptions by sex and also to provide the basis of effective learning strategies to correct their misconception. For this study, 48 childrens were sampled from the 6th grade. Data were obtained by the individual interview and summarized by using network analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1. It was found that children had the varied preconceptions on rock and expressed as empirical and visual view rather than scientific expression of the concepts. They had also misconceptions about composition and cycle of rock. 2. For sex, girls had various types of the expressions through experimental and observational activity compared to boys, but boys were better than girls in the scientific conceptions. 3. Remedial methods such as the observational learning and utilization of the audio-visual materials, field trips and visitation of the science facilities will be necessary for children to correct misconceptions.

      • 과학개념의 위계적 분석 및 그 적용을 통한 교수 효과와 과학교육과정 계열성의 타당화 평가 연구

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychological hierarchy structure of science concepts and to determine the effective teaching order by comparing the teaching effects of the psychological hierarchy order with those of teaching order of the current text in order to inquire validating evaluation framework of science curriculum sequence. Key concepts were selected by tasks analysis in the seven units of elementary and secondary school curriculum. Concept formation tests were developed to evaluate each concepts achievement. The test items were made according to each of the concepts based on 12 prototype tasks developed by Frayer(1969). To identify the students' psychological hierarchy the test items were administrated to elementary and secondary school students. Ordering theory was used to identify the students' psychological hierarchy. Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study as an experimental design. Teaching with psychological hierarchy order was applied tp experimental group and teaching with concept order described in the current text was applied to control group. The major results of this study are as followings: 1. The students' psychological hierarchy structures are different from logical hierarchy structures. 2. The science teachers' psychological hierarchy structures are different from not only logical hierarchy structures but also students' psychological hierarchy structures. 3. The mean score of experimental group applied psychological hierarchy order is significantly higher(p<.05) than the control group in the concept achievement.

      • 고교생의 논리적사고력과 과학탐구 기능 사이의 상관관계에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the interrelationships on integrated science process skills and Piagetian cognitive modes for high school students according to the different cognitive reasoning levels. About 509 high school students were randomly selected for the samples of this study. They were identified as concrete, transitional and formal operational stage with the scores of GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking) developed by Roadrangka, Yeaney and Padilla(1982), and TIPS Ⅱ(Test of Integrated Process Skills) developed by Burns, Wise and Okey(1983). The result of this study were showed that about 11.8% of the samples were in the concrete operational stage and about 24.4% of the samples were in the transitional stage, while about 63.8% of them were in the formal operational stage. It was also found that the achivement scores of the science process skills increase in accordance with the cognitive reasoning levels. The value of the correlation coefficient between science process skills and cognitive reasoning abilities was 0.49, which was significant at the 0.05 level. This finding seems to support previous research that the student's cognitive resoning abilities appeared to have influenced student's scores of the science process skills No differences to the logical reasoning ability between male and female students according to each cognitive level were found except formal operational stage.

      • 과학 용어 분류를 통한 초등학생들의 심리적 과학 영역 분석

        통합적인 과학 교육의 필요성이 부각되고 있으며 통합 방안에 관한 여러 연구들이 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 통합에 관한 연구는 학문의 구조와 인식론적인 측면에 그 근거를 두고 이루어지고 있다. 보다 효율적인 통합 과학 학습을 위해서는 학생들의 심리적인 측면에 관한 연구가 이루어져야 한다. 이러한 필요성에 의해 본 연구에서는, 초등학교 6학년 96명을 대상으로 교육과정상의 과학 용어 분류를 통하여 초등학생들의 심리적인 과학 영역과 그 특징을 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 다양한 과학 영역을 형성하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며 특히 ‘전기’, ‘인체’, ‘지구’, ‘에너지’, ‘식물’, ‘동물’, ‘환경’, ‘생물’, ‘날씨’, ‘꽃’의 빈도가 높게 나타났다. 각 영역에 포함된 과학 용어를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일상 생활의 경험에서 형성된 관련성을 강하게 유지하고 있는 경우가 있었다. 둘째, 가장 포괄적인 영역은 ‘지구’영역이었다. 이 영역에는 다른 영역에 포함되었던 대부분의 용어들이 관련되고 있었다. 따라서 ‘지구’영역을 통합의 중심으로 하는 것은 학생들의 심리적인 측면에도 잘 부합되는 것이라고 보여진다. The importance of integrated approach have increased gradually in science education. But most of researches on integrated science have been based on the structure of science and epistemology. The investigations of students' psychological science domains are needed for effectiveness of integrated science in science curriculum and classrooms. In this study, for exploration of elementary school students' psychological science domains and their properties, students(N=96) were asked to classify scientific words presented on textbooks in several categories. Many psychological science domains were revealed. Among them, the domains that were over 20% are 'Electricity', 'The human body', 'The earth', 'Energy', 'Plant', 'Animal', 'Environment', 'Living things', 'Weather', 'Flower'. According to the results from analysis on the words that students presented in each domains, the participants hold strongly the relationships caused by everyday experiences. For example, 'light' and 'heat' showed high frequency in 'Electricity' domain and 'The human body' domain included 'force' and 'motion' in high frequency. The most inclusive domain was 'The earth'. Not only the words on earth science but also biological and chemical words were classified in this domain. So The integration that centered with 'The earth' domain looks correspond to the elementary school students' psychological aspect.

        파킨슨씨병 환자에 있어서 자가부신수질 이식술

        Recent experimental studies and clinical cases have suggested that grafting tissue from the adrenal medulla into the brain may alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Autologous adrenal medullary grafts into the striatum was performed stereotactically in two patients with Parkinson's disease. Both patients were bedridden preoperatively, but 4 months after the surgery both became ambulatory and one was even capable of returning to his job. Even though the number of cases was small⑵ and the follow-up period was short, this study shows that adrenal medullary transplantation into the striatum may have some beneficial effects in patient with Parkinson's disease. Further experimental and clinical trials are necessary to see whether this procedure will be a recommendable surgical treatment for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease.

        Correlation between Cerebral Vasospasm after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 Levels in Serum and Cerebrospinal Fluid

        Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation of the ICAM-l levels in serum and CSF with cerebral vasospasm in early aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage [SAH] patients. Methods : A prospective analysis was performed in thirty consecutive patients who underwent early surgery for intracranial aneurysmal SAH. The serum and CSF were obtained daily through the indwelling arterial lines and intraoperative ventriculostomy, or cisternal drain for 4 consecutive days after surgery. The ICAM-1 levels in serum and CSF samples were measured via quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : The mean concentration of serum in aneurysmal SAH patients was 207.89ng/ml compared with 132.25ng/ml in controls. The mean concentration of CSF in aneurysmal SAH patients was 76.39ng/ml compared with 3.96ng/ml in controls. There were no significant differences between serum and CSF ICAM-1 level with regards to clinical characteristics in patients with aneurysmal SAH [P>0.05]. However, CSF ICAM-1 levels increased significantly in patients with vasospasm compared with those without vasospasm [P<0.05]. Conclusion : The major result of this study shows that ICAM-1 is increased in CSF after early aneurysmal SAH and that this increase in ICAM-1 has correlation with cerebral vasospasm. Further study is needed to determine whether ICAM-1 levels may be indicator in the pathogenesis of important events leading to cerebral vasospasm.

        Resolution of Isolated Unilateral Hypoglossal Nerve Palsy Following Microvascular Decompression of the Intracranial Vertebral Artery

        Isolated hypoglossal nerve paresis due to mechanical compression from a vascular lesion is very rare. We present a case of a 32-year-old man who presented with spontaneous abrupt-onset dysarthria, swallowing difficulty and left-sided tongue atrophy. Brain computed tomographic angiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brainstem demonstrated an abnormal course of the left vertebral artery compressing the medulla oblongata at the exit zone of the hypoglossal rootlets that was relieved by microvascular decompression of the offending intracranial vertebral artery. This case supports the hypothesis that hypoglossal nerve palsy can be due to nerve stretching and compression by a pulsating normal vertebral artery. Microvascular decompression of the intracranial nerve and careful evaluation of the imaging studies can resolve unexpected isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy.

        Bony Protuberances on the Anterior and Posterior Clinoid Processes Lead to Traumatic Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysm Following Craniofacial Injury

        Traumatic intracranial aneurysms are rare, comprising 1% or less of all cerebral aneurysms. The majority of these aneurysms arise at the skull base or in the distal anterior and middle cerebral arteries or their branches following direct mural injury or acceleration-induced shearing force. We present a 50-year-old patient in whom subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was developed as a result of traumatic aneurysm rupture after a closed craniofacial injury. Through careful evaluation of the three-dimensional computed tomography and conventional angiographies, the possible mechanism of the traumatic internal carotid artery trunk aneurysm is correlated with a hit injury by the bony protuberances on the anterior and posterior clinoid processes. This traumatic aneurysm was successfully obliterated with clipping and wrapping technique. The possibility of a traumatic intracranial aneurysm should be considered when patient with SAH demonstrates bony protuberances on the clinoid process as a traumatic aneurysm may result from mechanical injury by the sharp bony edges.

        Neurocysticercosis Involving the Pituitary Stalk : Case Report and Literature Review

        Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic infestation of the central nervous system. Most cases of NCC are to related and/or associated with inflammation within the cerebral parenchyma. A 71-year-old woman presented with a 4-year history of visual disturbance. This symptom had become aggravated 4 weeks earlier. Her visual acuity gradually decreased and superior hemianopsia was noted. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an enhanced and thickened pituitary stalk accompanying a suspicious mass. The provisional diagnoses were lymphoma, glioma, or other inflammatory conditions. Laboratory studies, including blood and hormonal studies, showed normal findings. Surgical resection was performed. In the pathological examination, degenerated parasitic wall structure was seen and its contents were composed of completely degenerated focal globular structures suggesting the scolex of cysticercus. We report an unusual case of NCC involving the pituitary stalk which was presented with a juxtasellar tumor. The possible underlying mechanisms are discussed with a review of pertinent literature.
