Edible insects are considered novel protein sources, and the edible insect breeding industry is growing rapidly. However, fungal pathogens are a major threat to this industry, and appropriate identification of causative agents is important for the development of antifungal agents. In 2019, strains of the fungal pathogen Metarhizium were isolated from infected second and third instar larvae of the economically important edible insect Protaetia brevitarsis, which were collected from separate farms in Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Based on morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region, and 50-region of gene encoding the 1-α elongation factor, the fungal strains were identified as Metarhizium majus. Here, we report the detailed phylogenetic characteristics and morphological description of this species, which is prevalent in Korea. Identification of the principal disease-causing agent can help develop disease prevention and antifungal strategies for application in edible insect-rearing farms.
Morphological Characteristics of Korean Dried Ginseng Products
Hong, Hee-Do,Cho, Chang-Won,Kim, Young-Chan,Kim, Eun-Young,Rhee, Young-Kyung,Rho, Jeong-Hae,Choi, Seung-Hoe The Korean Society of Ginseng 2012 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.36 No.3
The purpose of this study was to determine a standard quality characteristic through the evaluation and statistical analysis of the morphological characteristics of dried ginseng (white ginseng) products. Samples of 4-year-old 30 and 50 piece grade curved ginseng and 5-year-old 25 and 15 piece grade straight ginseng products were collected from a market, with 5 to 10 packs of each product being collected annually over a 5-year period (2006-2010). Morphological characteristics, such as weight, length, diameter, and surface color, were measured and statistically analyzed to present a standard quality characteristic value using $mean{\pm}3SD$, a range that excluded outlier. The 4-year-old curved ginseng samples of 50 and 30 piece grade were 4.80 to 6.12 cm and 5.28 to 7.60 cm long, 0.22 to 1.70 cm and 0.21 to 2.07 cm wide, and weighed 5.28 to 7.40 g and 8.62 to 12.26 g, respectively. The 5-year-old straight ginseng samples of 25 and 15 piece grade were 9.66 to 15.47 cm and 10.66 to 16.80 cm long, 1.32 to 1.94 cm and 1.48 to 2.43 cm wide, and weighed 9.18 to 16.40 g and 15.89 to 24.82 g, respectively. The surface color of the different piece grades in the same type of dried ginseng product was similar, whereas the straight ginseng demonstrated a lower level of brightness, but the relative redness and yellowness were of higher levels, than that of curved ginseng.

<P>Background and objective: </P><P>A new interpretative strategy for pulmonary function tests (PFT) has been proposed by the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) Task Force. To assess the accuracy of this strategy, clinical diagnosis was compared with the PFT interpretation in patients showing concomitant decreases in FEV1 and FVC.</P><P>Methods: </P><P>A retrospective study was conducted of 681 patients with normal FEV1/FVC and low FVC who underwent lung volume measurements and spirometry on the same date between July and November 2005 at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Patients were clinically diagnosed by the consensus decision of two respiratory physicians, and the kappa coefficient was calculated to compare the clinical diagnosis with the PFT interpretation using the ATS/ERS strategy.</P><P>Results: </P><P>The PFT interpretation showed an obstructive pattern in 205 patients and a restrictive pattern in 476. Of the 205 patients with an obstructive pattern on PFT, 44 were clinically diagnosed with obstructive, 97 with restrictive and 17 with mixed disease, whereas 47 patients had no disease. Of the 476 patients with a restrictive pattern on PFT, 11 were clinically diagnosed with obstructive, 369 with restrictive and 60 with mixed disease, whereas 36 patients had no disease. Manifestations of Sasang Typology according to Common Chronic Diseases in Koreans
Hong, Seung Wan,Suh, Young Sung,Kim, Dae Hyun,Kim, Mi Kyung,Kim, Hye Soon,Park, Kyung Sik,Hwang, Jae Seok,Shin, So Jin,Cho, Chi Heum,Jung, Sung Won,Ha, Il Do,Kwon, Young Kyu Hindawi Limited 2018 Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medic Vol.2018 No.-
<P>Sasang typology is a traditional Korean medical classification scheme that combines medical management with general medicine and can be applied to chronic diseases. We aimed to analyze differences in Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and Sasang Digestive Function Inventory (SDFI) results in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, functional dyspepsia, major depressive disorder (MDD), and adenomyosis. In this cross-sectional study, data were collected at a medical college hospital in South Korea. A total of 248 patients were included: 52 with DM, 47 with hypertension, 36 with functional dyspepsia, 26 with MDD, and 87 with adenomyosis. The subjects took both the SPQ and the SDFI. The outcome measures in this study were body mass index (BMI), SPQ score, and SDFI score. The DM and hypertension groups, which were expected to demonstrate many Taeeum-type traits, exhibited high BMI, high SPQ-Behavior and SDFI-Appetite scores, and low SPQ-Emotionality and SDFI-Digestion scores. The functional dyspepsia group showed low BMI and high scores for SPQ-Behavior, SPQ-Emotionality, SDFI-Digestion, and SDFI-Appetite. The MDD group demonstrated high SPQ-Emotionality and SDFI-Digestion scores, low BMI, and low SPQ-Behavior and SDFI-Appetite scores. The adenomyosis group demonstrated high scores for SPQ-Behavior, SDFI-Digestion, and SDFI-Appetite, low BMI, and low SPQ-Emotionality scores. Different characteristics distinguishing Sasang traits according to chronic diseases were ascertained, especially for Taeeum and Soeum types.</P>
Performance Evaluation of a BACnet-based Fire Detection and Monitoring System for use in Buildings
Won-Seok Song,Seung-Ho Hong 대한전기학회 2006 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.4 No.1
The objective of this paper is to propose a reference model of a fire detection and monitoring system using MS/TP protocol. The reference model is designed to satisfy the requirements of response time and flexibility. The reference model is operated on the basis of BACnet, a standard communication protocol for building automation systems. Validity of the reference model was examined using a simulation model. This study also evaluated the performance of the BACnet-based fire detection and monitoring system in terms of network-induced delay. Simulation results show that the reference model satisfies the requirements of the fire detection and monitoring system.
