The Clarify the distinction of the community structure of the sea birds at Shin Hung fish farm made by sea level and Yong Su reservoir surface level, I investigated above -mentioned thing from January 1987 to December 1987 and have gotten a result like below matters. 1. The sea birds observed at Shin Hung fish farm were 53 species and 1,327 individuals, 45 species, 8,569 individuals at Yong Su reservoir and common species of the two census areas were 34 species. 2. Monthly species number in two areas were there a great deal in May, also passage migrant consisted of various community by visiting in this time. 3. Individual number was the highest in January and February, winter visitor visited in September, October, went in February, April. 4. The most dominant species of two census areas was Anus poecilorhynchu, the following birds were Anus platyrhynchols, Anas cyecca in rwo. 5. Diversity of two census areas was the highest in May, community structure was various and complicated at this time.

Two types of modified celluloses which contain trinitrophenyl groups as chromophore were synthesized from carboxymethyl cellulose Whatman CM 70 and CM 32. Diaminoethyl groups were added to the CM 70 and CM 32 to make DAE-CM celluloses and then the DAE-CM groups were substituted by 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl groups to produce TNP-celluloses. Average particle size of the TNP-cellulose from CM 32 was 44.6 ±9.6 μm in diameter and 127.9±22.5 μm in length, which was much smaller than those from CM 70, however its TNP-moiety per gram determined by using the molar extinction coefficient 1.33×10^4 of ε-TNP-lysine at 345 nm, was 0.68 millimoles, which was 5.6-fold greater than those from CM 70. The absorption spectrum of TNP-oligosaccharides which were the soluble products of TNP-celluloses by a cellulase preparation Onozuka R-10, showed a maximal peak at 344 nm. Increases in the absorbance during hydrolysis were linear with the enzyme concentration, and the differences of slope values between two types of TNP-celluloses that the more semsitive assay could be achieved by using those from CM 32 as substrate at the low range of the enzyme concentration.

<P>Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by irreversible articular cartilage destruction by inflammatory reaction. Among inflammatory stimuli, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is known to play a crucial role in OA pathogenesis by stimulating several mediators that contribute to cartilage degradation. Recently, the marine brown alga <I>Sargassum serratifolium</I> has been reported to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in microglial and human umbilical vein endothelial cell models using lipopolysaccharide and tumor necrosis factor-α, but its beneficial effects on OA have not been investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-osteoarthritic effects of ethanol extract of <I>S. serratifolium</I> (EESS) in SW1353 human chondrocytes and, in parallel, primary rat articular chondrocytes. Our results showed that EESS effectively blocked the generation of reactive oxygen species in IL-1β-treated SW1353 and rat primary chondrocytes, indicating that EESS has a potent antioxidant activity. EESS also attenuated IL-1β-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E<SUB>2</SUB>, major inflammatory mediators in these cells, which was associated with the inhibition of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression. Moreover, EESS downregulated the level of gene expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, -3 and -13 in SW1353 chondrocytes treated with IL-1β, resulting in their extracellular secretion reduction. In addition, the IL-1β-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) was restored by EESS. Furthermore, EESS reduced the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathways upon IL-1β stimulation. These results indicate that EESS has the potential to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects through inactivation of the NF-κB, p38 MAPK, and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that EESS may have the potential for chondroprotection, and extracts of <I>S. serratifolium</I> could potentially be used in the prevention and treatment of OA.</P>
Genomic Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2: Distribution of Clades in the Republic of Korea in 2020

Since a novel beta-coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was first reported in December 2019, there has been a rapid global spread of the virus. Genomic surveillance was conducted on samples isolated from infected individuals to monitor the spread of genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2 in Korea. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency performed whole genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 in Korea for 1 year (January 2020 to January 2021). A total of 2,488 SARS-CoV-2 cases were sequenced (including 648 cases from abroad). Initially, the prevalent clades of SARS-CoV-2 were the S and V clades, however, by March 2020, GH clade was the most dominant. Only international travelers were identified as having G or GR clades, and since the first variant 501Y.V1 was identified (from a traveler from the United Kingdom on December 22nd, 2020), a total of 27 variants of 501Y.V1, 501Y.V2, and 484K.V2 have been classified (as of January 25th, 2021). The results in this study indicated that quarantining of travelers entering Korea successfully prevented dissemination of the SARS-CoV-2 variants in Korea.
