        Automated recognition of white blood cells using deep learning

        The detection, counting, and precise segmentation of white blood cells in cytological images are vital steps in the eff ectivediagnosis of several cancers. This paper introduces an effi cient method for automatic recognition of white blood cells inperipheral blood and bone marrow images based on deep learning to alleviate tedious tasks for hematologists in clinicalpractice. First, input image pre-processing was proposed before applying a deep neural network model adapted to cellslocalization and segmentation. Then, model outputs were improved by using combined predictions and corrections. Finally,a new algorithm that uses the cooperation between model results and spatial information was implemented to improve thesegmentation quality. To implement our model, python language, Tensorfl ow, and Keras libraries were used. The calculationswere executed using NVIDIA GPU 1080, while the datasets used in our experiments came from patients in the Hemobiologyservice of Tlemcen Hospital (Algeria). The results were promising and showed the effi ciency, power, and speed of theproposed method compared to the state-of-the-art methods. In addition to its accuracy of 95.73%, the proposed approachprovided fast predictions (less than 1 s).

        Prevalence of the anatomical variations of concha bullosa and its relation with sinusitis among Saudi population: a computed tomography scan study

        Concha bullosa (CB) is a pneumatic cavitation inside a concha in the nasal cavity. It is one of the most widely recognized nasal variations and is mostly found in the middle concha. CB is divided according to its site into three types; lamellar, bulbous and extensive. The goal of our study was to estimate the prevalence of CB among Saudi adult population and its association with sinusitis by using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). This was a retrospective study carried out over a three-year period on 879 adult Saudi patients aged 18 years or older, referred for MDCT assessment of paranasal sinuses. Males were 540 and females were 339. Patients with facial congenital anomalies or nasal trauma were excluded from our study. CB was prevalent in both males and females among Saudi population (55.4%, 55.7%) respectively. Bilateral CB (55.5%) was more frequent than unilateral (44.5%). Extensive CB (44.0%) was the most frequent type. Sinusitis was associated more in patients with CB (48.0%) versus those who have no CB (5.9%). In conclusion, CB was prevalent among Saudi population and the most frequently recorded is the extensive type. Furthermore, the most common type associated with sinusitis was extensive CB (49.6%).

        Bearing Fault Diagnosis of a PWM Inverter Fed-Induction Motor Using an Improved Short Time Fourier Transform

        Induction motor diagnosis using the Power Spectral Density (PSD) estimation based on the Fourier Transform calculation has been widely used as an analysis method for its simplicity and low computation time. However, the use of PSD is not recommended for processing non stationary signals (case of variable speed applications) and therefore the analysis with PSD is not reliable. To overcome this handicap, the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is proposed in this paper; giving additional information on changes of the frequencies over time for stator current signal analysis. Furthermore, the use of a new approach called Maxima’s Location Algorithm is also proposed. This later will be associated with the STFT analysis to show only those harmonics with useful information on existing faults. This approach will be used in the diagnosis of bearing faults of a PWM inverter-fed induction motor operating at variable speed. Several experimental results in the transient state are carried out fi rstly to validate the results and secondly to illustrate the merits and eff ectiveness of the combined STFT/ MLA proposed approach.

        Improving IPTV Forwarding Masechanism in IEEE 802.16j MMR Networks Based on Aggregation

        Internet protocol television (IPTV) service depends on the network quality of service (QoS) and bandwidth of the broadband service provider. IEEE 802.16j mobile multihop relay Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access networks have the opportunity to offer high bandwidth capacity by introducing relay stations. However, to actually satisfy QoS requirements for offering IPTV services (HDTV, SDTV, Web TV, and mobile TV) for heterogeneous users’ requests, providers must use a video server for each IPTV service type, which increases the network load, especially bandwidth consumption and forwarding time. In this paper, we present a solution for forwarding IPTV video streaming to diverse subscribers via an 802.16j broadband wireless access network. In particular, we propose a new multicast tree construction and aggregation mechanism based on the unique property of prime numbers. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme reduces both bandwidth consumption and forwarding time.

        Thermal stability and degradation of chitosan modified with phenylacetic acid

        N-(phenylacetyl) chitosan (NPAC) polymer was synthesized by the reaction of phenylacetic acid with chitosan. The chemical structure of the formed polymer was characterized by IR and microanalysis. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the thermal stability of the NPAC polymer was less than that of chitosan. The products of NPAC thermal degradation were identified by the GC-MS technique. The results indicate that the mechanism of degradation of NPAC polymer is characterized by the elimination of low-molecular weight radicals. A combination of these radicals and a random scission mechanism along the backbone chain are the main source of the degradation products.

        Higher Expression of Toll-like Receptors 3, 7, 8, and 9 in Pityriasis Rosea

        Background: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common papulosquamous skin disease in which an infective agent may be implicated. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an important role in immune responses and in the pathophysiology of inflammatory skin diseases. Our aim was to determine the possible roles of TLRs 3, 7, 8, and 9 in the pathogenesis of PR. Methods: Twenty-four PR patients and 24 healthy individuals (as controls) were included in this case control study. All recruits were subjected to routine laboratory investigations. Biopsies were obtained from one active PR lesion and from healthy skin of controls for the detection of TLR 3, 7, 8, and 9 gene expression using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: This study included 24 patients (8 females and 16 males) with active PR lesions, with a mean age of 28.62 years. Twenty four healthy age- and sex-matched individuals were included as controls (8 females and 16 males, with a mean age of 30.83 years). The results of the routine laboratory tests revealed no significant differences between both groups. Significantly elevated expression of all studied TLRs were detected in PR patients relative to healthy controls (p < .001). Conclusions: TLRs 3, 7, 8, and 9 might be involved in the pathogenesis of PR.

        Spectrophotometric Determination of Aminoglycoside Antibiotics Based on their Oxidation by Potassium Permanganate

        순수 형태 또는 약제 중 네오마이신과 스트렙토마이신을 신속하게 분석하는 인증된 분광광도법적 방법을 기술하였다. 이 방법은 산성 용액 속에서 기지 과량의 과망간산포타슘으로 약품을 산화시킨 다음 미반응의 과망간산을 아마란스(방법 A), 산성 오렌지 II(방법 B), 인디고카민(방법 C) 및 메틸렌블루(방법 D) 색소로 각각 lmax=521, 485, 610 및 664 nm에서 흡광도를 측정하여 정량하는 방법이다. 네오마이신과 스트렙토마이신의 농도 범위 5-10 및 2-7 mg mL-1에서 Beer의 법칙이 성립되었으며 겉보기 몰흡수계수와 sendell 감도 값은 네오마이신과 스트렙토마이신에 대하여 각각 5.47-6.20´104, 2.35-2.91´105 L mol-1 cm-1 및 7.57-8.59, 5.01-6.2 ng cm-2 였다. 반응에 영향을 미치는 여러 변수를 조사하여 최적화하였으며 이 방법을 순수 Çü태 × 약제 Çü태의 약품에 적용하여 좋은 Á확도와 정밀도로 정량하였다. á제의 방해는 관찰되지 않았으며 얻어진 결과는 공인 석법을 사용하여 얻은 aacute;과와 잘 일치하였다. A rapid, simple and sensitive validated spectrophotometric methods have been described for the assay of neomycin and streptomycin either in pure form or in pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed methods were based on the oxidation of the studied drugs by a known excess of potassium permanganate in acidic medium and estimating the unreacted permanganate with amaranth dye (method A), acid orange II (method B), indigocarmine (method C), and methylene blue (method D), in the same acid medium at a suitable lmax=521, 485, 610 and 664 nm, respectively. Beers law is obeyed in the concentration range of 5-10 and 2-7 mg mL-1 for neomycin and streptomycin, respectively. The apparent molar absorptivity and sandell sensitivity values are in the range 5.47-6.20104, 2.35-2.91105 L mol-1 cm-1 and 7.57-8.59, 5.01-6.2 ng cm-2 for neomycin and streptomycin, respectively. Different variables affecting the reaction were studied and optimized. The proposed methods were applied successfully to the determination of the examined drugs either in a pure or pharmaceutical dosage forms with good accuracy and precision. No interferences were observed from excipients and the results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained using the official methods.
