Objectives: We conducted a comparative analysis of the differences in the incidence of 8 acute respiratory viruses and the changes in their patterns before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Three sentinel surveillance systems of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service were analyzed. The average numbers of reported cases and the related hospital admissions and outpatient data were compared between April 2018–2019 and 2020–2021. Changes in the disease burden and medical expenditures between these 2 time periods were evaluated. Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of reported cases of all acute viral respiratory infections, except for human bocavirus, decreased significantly. Data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service also showed decreases in the actual amount of medical service usage and a marked reduction in medical expenditures. Conclusion: Non-pharmacological interventions in response to COVID-19 showed preventive effects on the transmission of other respiratory viruses, as well as COVID-19. Although COVID-19 had a tremendous impact on society as a whole, with high social costs, there were also positive effects, such as a reduction in the incidence of acute viral respiratory infections.
한국인의 언어의식 : 언어접촉과 관련된 사회언어학적 연구
조준학,박남식,장석진,이정민 서울대학교 어학연구소 1981 語學硏究 Vol.17 No.2
The present study is an attempt to provide a rough profile of lingustic consciousness, as reflected in the day-to-day use of present-day Korean. The underlying assumption throughout is that the drastic socio-political changes in post-Liberation Korea must have left strong imprints in the popular Korean psyche and that there must be linguistic reflexes for these imprints, The present study does indeed come up with an interesting assortment of linguistic changes attributable to such socio-political changes as ① the coming of democracy and the nuclear family and ② an ever increasing encounter with other dialects and languages. As such, the present study can serve as a basis for a systematic formulation of language policy or for a principled 'purification' of Korean. A 50-item questionnaiare is used for the present study. The 784 respondents range from middle-school students to college graduates and represent both sexes and most of the major dialects of Korean.
Vol.13 No.5
This research attempts to investigate the way of establishing a systematic and consistent review results by utilizing DB system of broadcasting content, which has been operated by Korea Communications Standards Commission. The current problems of DB system was analyzed and compared with review system of other contents regulating organizations to seek better alternatives. The results show that related information are recorded in review DB of other organizations in detail, so that committee members can utilize DB system in making consistent and objective judgment. In addition, other contents regulating organizations open the review results to the public and enhance the accessibility, so that people can make use of the DB. It is necessary to improve review DB in a systematic and efficient way for broadcasters and contents productions to accept and consent the review results.
Epidemiological characteristics of varicella outbreaks in the Republic of Korea, 2016–2020
Eun-Young Kim,Chungmin Park,Gyehee Lee,Suyeon Jeong,Jeongsuk Song,Dong-Han Lee 질병관리본부 2022 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.13 No.2
Objectives: We described the trends and epidemiological characteristics of varicella outbreaks from 2016 to 2020 in the Republic of Korea. Methods: We investigated variables such as the outbreak setting, age of patients, vaccination status, and lesion count. The collected data were analyzed with the Cochrane-Armitage trend test and Kruskal-Wallis test. These statistical tests were performed using R ver. 4.0.3. Results: The number of varicella outbreaks increased from 2016 to 2018; however, after a slight decrease in the number of outbreaks in 2019, the number fell sharply in 2020. The median size of outbreaks decreased from 8 to 9 cases during 2016−2019 to 6 cases in 2020. The median duration of outbreaks was 18 days during 2016−2017, 28 days in 2018, 29 days in 2019, and 15 days in 2020. Varicella outbreaks occurred most frequently in elementary schools, and vaccination coverage of patients increased from 89.4% in 2016 to 97.2% in 2019. The median age of patients with outbreak-related varicella decreased from 8 years in 2016 to 6 years in 2020. Conclusion: Significant changes were observed in the age of patients with outbreak-related varicella. Ongoing monitoring of varicella outbreaks should be conducted. Further research will be needed to measure the disease burden of varicella and enable evidence-based policy decisions.
Analysis of Extracellular Vesicles Using Coffee Ring
Jeong, Hwapyeong,Han, Chungmin,Cho, Siwoo,Gianchandani, Yogesh,Park, Jaesung American Chemical Society 2018 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.10 No.27

Extracellular vesicles are categorized in subsets according to their biogenesis processes. To facilitate the investigation of subsets, an effective method is needed for isolating subpopulations. The efficacy of existing density and size-based isolation methods is limited, and as a result, the correlation of properties within separated subpopulations is modest. Here, we introduced size separation with ∼48 nm resolution that exploits Marangoni flow and the coffee-ring effect in microdroplets in which extracellular vesicles are spatially deposited at different location according to size of extracellular vesicle. Interestingly, the analysis of tetraspanin proteins of the extracellular vesicles facilitated by this method reveals that the size of extracellular vesicles is correlated with expression of tetraspanin proteins (CD9, CD63, CD81) that are associated with the size of extracellular vesicles. The findings show that CD9 and CD81 are uniformly expressed regardless of size, CD63 is highly expressed only in larger extracellular vesicles. This evidence indicates that extracellular vesicles can be classified based on size and expression of CD63.
[FIG OMISSION]
