Nitrogen and sulfur-codoped graphene quantum dots (NS-GQDs) were synthesized through simple and fast microwave-assisted hydrothermal reactions of catecholamine. As-prepared NS-GQDs had 4.1 nm in lateral size with 2 nm of height. NS-GQDs included a large portion of N and S atoms, making them electron-rich. It was also found that NS-GQDs showed enhanced absorption in visible range and emitted very intense fluorescence with 17% of a quantum yield. As-prepared NS-GQDs exhibited the outstanding photocatalytic activity for the oxidative coupling reactions of various aryl amines under visible light irradiation. Its photocatalytic activity was much higher than that of N-GQDs and O-GQDs. The reaction mechanism of oxidative coupling reaction was fully investigated.
