A newborn infant is at a disadvantage in maintaining body temperature chiefly because of a large surface to volume ratio and relatively little insulating subcutaneous tissue. Frequently soon after birth the infants skin becomes pale or blue, and the body temperature falls, often several degrees below the intrauterine temperature. Therefore the author designed this study to explore the changes of body temperature in normal newborn infants. Sixty four cases of newborn infants delivered at Chosun university hospital from February to August 1988 were participated in this study. The author had measured body temperatures at birth, after 2,4,6 hours and 6 hours interval for the first 42 hours. And also, comparative study of body temperature and stabilization time between rectal temperature and axillary temperature was done. The results were summarized as follows: 1) At birth, mean ????? temperature was 3.12℃±0.36 and mean axillary temperature was 35.84℃±0.29 2) The mean rectal and axillary temperature were increased to 36.81℃ and 36.70℃ during first 30hours of life respectively, and then no significan changes were seen. 3) The mean difference between rectal temperature and axillary temperature was 0.15℃. 4) Mean of stabilization time of rectal temperature was 2.04 minutes and axillary temperature was 3.93 minutes.

A preliminary survey of Sarcocystis species in the slaughtered cattle in Cheju was undertaken during May through October 1989, using digested diagnostic technique for the heart, the esophagus and the dorsal muscles of the neck specimens digested in 0.5% trypsin solution. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The overall infection rate of Sarcocystis in a total of 218 slaughtered cattle was as high as 36.7% with the highest frequencies in the esophagus muscles(21. 6%), followed by in the dorsal muscles of the neck(19.1%) and in the heart rnuscles(17.9%). 2. Age difference was noticed as 64.3% in the cattle older than five years in comparison with 41.7%, 34.4%, in the group of two to four years and in the group of younger than two years respectively. 3. It was also noticed that the prevalence in the Brahman cross breed was higher(40.0%) than in any other breeds. 4. Regional distribution of Sarcocystis infections was observed as 75.0% in south-east area, 50.0% 44.7%, 35.0%, 32.0% and 20.6% in the areas of Seogwipo city, north-west, south-west, Cheju city and northeast area respectively. 5. According to the type of rearing the infection rate in the ranch type farm was noticed with and in the stock farms(36.2%).

This survey was carried out to investigate the fatality of the newborn beef calves in three ranches in Cheju area. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The fatality rate was 5.8%(67 calves) from the total 1,160 calves examined. 2. There were pneumonia(46%), enteritis(16%), suckling disorder(13%), theileriasis (4%). and hypomagnesemia(4%) in dead calves. 3. Most of dead calves(78%) with 52cases died within 30days postparturition. 4. Bacteria-induced fatal diseases in newborn calves within 30 days postparturition might be closely associated with maternal immunity by the lack of immunoglobalin of strum.

Enzyme-linked Immuno sorbent Assay (ELISA) for the serological diagnosis oi Bruceiia abortus was developed and compared with plate aggluhnation test Cell wall antigen was extracted from Brucella abortus 1119-3 by sonicabon and with a sodium deoxychlate solution Optimum protein concentra tion of coating antigen 0.4㎍/100㎕ protein on each microtiter plate well. Horse radish peroxidase(HRP) labled protein-G was used as a tracer of reacted antibodies ELISA confirmed the agreeable results of 40 rases out of 43 cases by plate aggulutination test ELISA diagnosed positive cases (10 out of 12) and negatiw cases (1 out of 12) with dubious sera by plate agglutination test From this results EL ISA could be used for the early diagnostic tools of Brucellosis in cattle.

The Agrobacterium-mediated transformation has been successfully used method to introduce foreign genes into some monocotyledonous as well as a large number of dicotyledonous plants genome. We developed transgenic Chinese cabbage plants with insect-resistance gene, modified CryIAc, by Agrobacterium- transformation and confirmed transgene copy number by Southern blot analysis. We confirmed that twenty-nine out of 46 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants have single copy of CryIAc. To obtain the sequences information on the transferred DNA (T-DNA) integration into plant genome, we analyzed left border (LB) flanking sequences by genome walking (GW) PCR method. Out of 46 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants examined, 37 carried the vector backbone sequences. This result indicates that the transfer of the vector backbone from the binary vectors resulted mainly from inefficient termination of LB site. Analysis of T-DNA LB flanking region of 9 transgenic Chinese cabbage plants without vector backbone revealed that all LB ends were not conserved and nucleotides up to 36bp from the LB cleavage site were deleted.
