Basal Cell Carcinoma in a Domestic Hedgehog
고규련,홍경화,김재훈 한국임상수의학회 2015 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.32 No.6
A 1-year-old female hedgehog was presented with subcutaneous mass in the right forelimb. Grossly, an elevated subcutaneous mass approximately 4 cm in diameter was located in forelimb. Central dark brown area was surrounded by peripheral milky white zone in the cut surface of mass. Histopathologically, numerous neoplastic cells formed irregular cords or sheets in dermis. Most of neoplastic cells showed palisading features to basement membrane with or without central caseous necrosis. These neoplastic cells showed invasive tendency to adjacent tissues. According to immunohistochemistry, the neoplastic cells demonstrated strong positive signals for pancytokeratin, and negative for vimentin. Based on the gross, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, this mass was diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma in a hedgehog.
Bone Marrow Toxicity Caused by Estrogen Toxicity in a Yorkshire Terrier with Leydig Cell Tumor
김윤희,고규련,노미영,김재훈,최을수 한국임상수의학회 2019 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.36 No.2
A 15-year-old intact Yorkshire terrier was presented with anorexia, lethargy, and a pale mucous membrane. A physical examination one year ago revealed right testis mass and subcutaneous petechia. Blood work revealed severe thrombocytopenia and mild anemia, and no abnormalities were found in serum chemistry or ultrasonography. The preoperative serum estrogen concentration was moderately elevated. The enlarged testis was surgically removed. A well-encapsulated mass composed of polyhedral or round with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm containing fine granular or vacuolation were found in a histological examination of the removed tissue. The nuclei of tumor cells were round, and mitotic figures were low but neoplastic cells showed a mild invasive tendency to adjacent tissues with contained neoplastic cell emboli in one lymphatic lumen. A diagnosis of a malignant Leydig cell tumor was made. The patient recovered from surgery uneventfully, but his condition worsened despite repeated transfusions and supportive therapy, and he was euthanized according to the owner’s decision. Leydig cell tumor should be included in estrogen toxicity associated with testicular mass.

Clinostomum (C.) complanatum is one of the trematode helminthes in birds and causes incidental infectionin human. A black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) was referred to the Jeju wildlife rescue center. Because of the deathof bird after two weeks treatment, necropsy was performed to the bird. Grossly, many living worms adhered to theoral mucosa including pharynx and esophagus were observed. The worms removed were identified as C. complanatumafter morphological observation. The linguiform adult worms were 5.19 ± 0.48 mm long and 1.80 ± 0.18 mm wide. Histopathologically, severe necrosis and surrounding inflammation were observed at the infection sites of adult wormin pharynx and esophagus. This is the first report for C. complanatum infection in wild black-tailed gull in Korea.
Ossifying Epulis in a Thoroughbred Foal
김준규,문성환,고규련,김재훈 한국임상수의학회 2014 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.31 No.2
A 4-month-old female thoroughbred foal was presented with large mass on mandibular gingiva. The enlargedmass was firm and yellowish pink in color, and occupied the whole mandibular arcade. The filly could not closeher mouth with her lips. Radiographs showed radioopaque mass under the mandible. The mass was surgically excisedfrom mandible. Histopathologically, gingival mass was characterized by hyperplastic gingival epithelium, wellvascularized collagenous stroma and large area of bony tissues. Based on the gross and histopathologic findings, thiscase was diagnosed as ossifying epulis in the mandibular gingiva. This is the first report of ossifying epulis in athoroughbred horse in Korea.

A 10-year-old, female spayed mixed-breed dog with a history of vomiting and anorexia was examined. Abnormal findings of comlete blood count and serum chemistry included polycythemia, thrombocytopenia, hyperglobulinemiaand hypoalbuminemia. Abdominal radiographs revealed severe unilateral renomegaly, and ultrasonographyshowed a left-sided renal mass. During the operation, left kidney was resected. Cytologial and histopathologicalexaminations revealed neoplastic lymphoid proliferation with high mitotic figures in renal mass. Immunohistochemistryrevealed tumor cells were CD3-positive and CD79α-negative, consistent with T-cell lineage. The renal mass of thiscase was diagnosed as renal T cell lymphosarcoma.
