Vol.19 No.3
(Background and Purpose) The exhibition “Our Lives Beyond Epidemics” at the National Folk Museum of Korea reflected the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its three parts illustrated three themes derived from the epidemic, while its design applied different formative languages in each space. This paper discusses the ways plasticity was derived and applied regarding the keyword outbreaks in “Part I Epidemics + Everyday Life” of the exhibition. There were challenges in maintaining the consistency of the plasticity regarding disease outbreaks derived from analyzing the reference spaces. Thus, this study employed a method to derive such plasticity based on its elements rather than the conventional method of inferring it through spatial references of similar themes. (Method) After determining the presence of plasticity in a state of disease outbreak based on the evidence of behavioral immune system (BIS), the state of outbreak and the initial state as a control tool were defined. Next, the spatial frequency theory was applied as an analytical tool. The comparative analysis of the plastic elements in the two states expressed as “spatial frequency,” showed that identical elements were found in the morphological classification using high spatial frequency (HSF), whereas the elements varied in the classification of physical properties using low spatial frequency (LSF). This suggested that plasticity in a state of outbreak could be derived based on the differences in physical properties of objects with identical morphology. (Results) Whether plasticity is found in a state of outbreak should be verified before applying Corten steel as the finishing material. Corten steel exhibits corrosion, a phenomenon that alters physical properties. Comparing plastic elements, expressed as spatial frequency, for the surface images taken before and after the corrosion of Corten steel, the same change in physical properties, as in the case of plasticity in a state of outbreak, was detected. Hence, Corten steel was determined as a suitable material to express outbreaks and used in the space for Part I of the exhibition. (Conclusions) This study demonstrated the potential generation of plasticity through application and methods to derive plasticity in outbreaks. Thus, it is significant to propose a method to generate plasticity as an alternative to conventional methods where plasticity is inferred and applied for a given reference, which has limitations. In a follow-up study, the method of generating plasticity should be further validated via an experiment on the receptive dimension of recognizing outbreaks regarding the generated plasticity, using a quantitative approach.

Construction Performance measurement and management has been interested by construction practitioners. However, current construction project management practices are related to short-term improvement plans rather than long-term and systematic approaches based upon performance analysis. As a result, there is a need for developing of a collaborative plan over project life cycle. Therefore, this paper reviews extensive literature and proposes the construction performance estimating model using a system dynamics. The paper proposes casual maps for planning, design, procurement, and construction phases. Each casual map includes all performance indicators and factors that impact on performance directly or indirectly. These casual maps that were developed by system thinking will enhance the understanding of the relationships among performances and factors. After further data gathering, these models can be used to estimate construction performance and eventually these will save project costs and shorten project schedule.
