Volunteering and psychological wellbeing in college students in China

        Geng Yun,Huang Chien‐Chung,Deng Guosheng,Cheung Shannon P.,Liao Jinyu 한국사회복지학회 2022 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.16 No.2

This study used data from 1871 college students across China to examine the relations among volunteering and PWB in 2020. Results of regression analysis indicate that volunteering had positive effects on the PWB of the students. Students whose motivation to volunteer was public interest had greater PWB, regardless of the degree to which they also reported private gain as a motivation. The significant interaction results indicate that students whose volunteer motivation included both public interest and private gains and who had high frequency of volunteering were more likely to have higher PWB. Policy and practice implications were discussed.

      • Differential Protein Expression Profile Between CD20 Positive and Negative Cells of the NCI-H929 Cell Line

        Geng, Chuan-Ying,Liu, Nian,Yang, Guang-Zhong,Liu, Ai-Jun,Leng, Yun,Wang, Hui-Juan,Li, Li-Hong,Wu, Yin,Li, Yan-Chen,Chen, Wen-Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.11

At present, multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable disease and cologenic cells may be responsible for disease relapse. It has been proposed that CD20+/CD138- NCI-H929 cells could be hallmarks of MM clonogenic cells. Here, the immunology phenotype of NCI-H929 cells is described. Only a small population of CD20+/CD138- cells (<1%) was found in the NCI-H929 cell line, but CD20+/CD138- cells were not detected. We found that CD20+/CD138+ cells were able to exhibit cologenic capacity by colony formation assay and continuous passage culture. Proteins were analyzed by 1D-SDS-PAGE and TMT based quantitative differential liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). 1,082 non-redundant proteins were identified, 658 of which were differentially expressed with at least a 1.5-fold difference. 205 proteins in CD20+ cells were expressed at higher levels and 453 proteins were at lower levels compared with CD20- cells. Most proteins had catalytic and binding activity and mainly participated in metabolic processes, cell communication and molecular transport. These results proved that there are different biological features and protein expression profile between CD20+ and CD20- cells in the NCI-H929 cell line.

Effects of Hardener Type on Cure Behavior and Physical Properties of TMP Modified UF Resin and Its Composites with Bamboo Powder

        Yun-fei Zhang,Man-geng Lu,Hui Liu,Yanguang Wu 한국고분자학회 2017 폴리머 Vol.41 No.2

In this study, effects of mixed hardeners (ammonium chloride mixed with ammonium persulfate, oxalate and phosphoric acid) on the properties of 2,4,6-trimethylolphenate modified UF resin (TMPUF) were studied, and the potlife, gel time and curing temperature of TMPUF/hardeners were characterized. The results indicated that the hardeners used have critical influence on the pH value of TMPUF and some proton donor can be used to lower the pH value of TMPUF with low formaldehyde content. Besides, bamboo particleboards were made with TMPUF/hardeners, and tensile properties, water absorption ratio and the swelling ratio of bamboo particleboards were characterized. The study demonstrated that the tensile strength of bamboo particleboards increased when partial ammonium chloride was replaced by ammonium persulfate to cure the TMPUF adhesives in our experiment.

Large tubular colonic duplication in an adult treated with a small midline incision

        Yuen Geng Yong,Kyung Uk Jung,Yong Beom Cho,Seong Hyeon Yun,Hee Cheol Kim,Woo Yong Lee,Ho-Kyung Chun 대한외과학회 2012 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.82 No.3

Tubular colonic duplication presenting in adults is rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of a 29-year-old lady presenting with a long history of chronic constipation, abdominal mass and repeated episodes of abdominal pain. The abdominal-pelvic computed tomography scan showed segmental bowel wall thickening thought to be small bowel, and dilatation with stasis of intraluminal content. The provisional diagnosis was small bowel duplication. She was scheduled for single port laparoscopic resection. However, a T-shaped tubular colonic duplication at sigmoid colon was found intraoperatively. Resection of the large T-shaped tubular colonic duplication containing multiple impacted large fecaloma and primary anastomosis was performed. There was no perioperative complication. We report, herein, the case of a T-shaped tubular colonic duplication at sigmoid colon in an adult who was successfully treated through mini-laparotomy assisted by single port laparoscopic surgery.

Cloning and expression analysis of c-type and g-type lysozymes in yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco)

        Fei Ke,Yun Wang,XiaoYao Cao,GaoWei Pan,Rui Geng 한국유전학회 2016 Genes & Genomics Vol.38 No.8

Lysozymes have important roles in innate immune system. Here, a c-type and a g-type lysozyme were identified from yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco). The deduced amino acid sequences of both lysozymes were conserved in catalytic sites and structural features as compared to their counterparts from other species. It was interesting that the g-type lysozyme possessed a signal peptide. The c-type and g-type lysozymes had the highest identity 89.4 and 76.2 % with that from channel catfish respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the two lysozymes had a closely relationship with that from channel catfish and Astyanax mexicanus. Lysozymes from one order could form more than one clade in the phylogenetic tree, which indicated the gene duplications in evolution. Expression analysis with real time quantitative PCR revealed that the two lysozyme genes were constitutively expressed in all the tested tissues. The highest expression of c-type lysozyme was observed in liver, followed by spleen, head kidney, and trunk kidney, while the g-type lysozyme had highest expression in intestine, followed by spleen, head kidney, and trunk kidney. The mRNA levels of both genes were all up-regulated after challenging with Aeromonas hydrophila. However, there were differences in tissues and time points when the mRNA levels reached its peak between the two lysozymes. It indicated the diversity in regulation mechanisms and detailed functions among lysozymes. Taking together, these results will benefit the understanding of yellow catfish lysozymes.

LAB Fermentation Improves Production of Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Withania somnifera Extract and Its Metabolic Signatures as Revealed by LC-MS/MS

( Jinhui Yu ),( Yun Geng ),( Han Xia ),( Deyuan Ma ),( Chao Liu ),( Rina Wu ),( Junrui Wu ),( Shengbo You ),( Yuping Bi ) 한국미생물생명공학회 2022 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.32 No.4

In this study we investigated the effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation on the ingredients and anti-oxidant activity of Withania somnifera extract. Four strains of LAB could proliferate normally in medium containing W. somnifera extract after the pH reached 3.1~3.5. LAB fermentation increased the content of alcohols and ketones, endowing the extract with the characteristic aroma of fermentation. Compared to the control, the DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging rates in the fermented samples were significantly improved, ranging from 48.5% to 59.6% and 1.2% to 6.4%. The content of total phenols was significantly increased by 36.1% during the fermentation of mixed bacteria. Moreover, the original composition spectrum of the extract was significantly changed while the differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were closely related to bile secretion, tryptophan metabolism and purine metabolism. Therefore, LAB fermentation can be used as a promising way to improve the flavor and bioactivity of the extracts of W. somnifera, making the ferments more attractive for use as functional food.

Learning curves for single incision and conventional laparoscopic right hemicolectomy

        Yoonah Park,Yuen Geng Yong,Seong Hyeon Yun,Kyung Uk Jung,Jung Wook Huh,Yong Beom Cho,Hee Cheol Kim,Woo Yong Lee,Ho-Kyung Chun 대한외과학회 2015 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.88 No.5

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the learning curves and early postoperative outcomes for conventional laparoscopic (CL) and single incision laparoscopic (SIL) right hemicolectomy (RHC). Methods: This retrospective study included the initial 35 cases in each group. Learning curves were evaluated by the moving average of operative time, mean operative time of every five consecutive cases, and cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis. The learning phase was considered overcome when the moving average of operative times reached a plateau, and when the mean operative time of every five consecutive cases reached a low point and subsequently did not vary by more than 30 minutes. Results: Six patients with missing data in the CL RHC group were excluded from the analyses. According to the mean operative time of every five consecutive cases, learning phase of SIL and CL RHC was completed between 26 and 30 cases, and 16 and 20 cases, respectively. Moving average analysis revealed that approximately 31 (SIL) and 25 (CL) cases were needed to complete the learning phase, respectively. CUSUM analysis demonstrated that 10 (SIL) and two (CL) cases were required to reach a steady state of complication-free performance, respectively. Postoperative complications rate was higher in SIL than in CL group, but the difference was not statistically significant (17.1% vs. 3.4%). Conclusion: The learning phase of SIL RHC is longer than that of CL RHC. Early oncological outcomes of both techniques were comparable. However, SIL RHC had a statistically insignificant higher complication rate than CL RHC during the learning phase.

Characterizations of Ru/ZnO catalysts with different Ru contents for selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde

        Bo Li,Meng-Fei Luo,Geng-Shen Hu,Ling-Yun Jin,Xiao Hong,Ji-Qing Lu 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.1

Ru catalysts supported on ZnO with different Ru contents were prepared by an impregnation method and were applied to the vapor-phase selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD),transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). It was found that with increasing Ru contents in the Ru/ZnO catalysts, the activity (TOF), surface acidity amount and deactivation rate increased and the selectivity to crotyl alcohol increased first and then decreased. The 3Ru/ZnO catalyst showed the highest selectivity to crotyl alcohol (up to 88.0%) for the hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde. The initial TOF values of the catalysts depended on the strength of surface acidity and the Ru particle sizes. The more Lewis acid sites made catalysts deactivate more easily. It was assumed that the deactivation was due to the formation of organic compounds deposition and poison effect of CO strongly adsorbed on the Ru atoms.

Gold Immunolocalization of Rubisco and Rubisco Activase in Pyrenoid of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

        He, Pei-Min,Zhang, Da-Bing,Chen, Geng-Yun,Liu, Qi-Gen,Wu, Wei-Ning The Korean Society of Phycology 2003 ALGAE Vol.18 No.2

The pyrenoid ultrastructure and distribution of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and Rubisco activase in the chloroplasts of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was studied using the immunogold localization technology with electron microscopy. There were several tubular thylakoids invading in the pyrenoid matrix to form several spokewise channels. The connections between pyrenoid matrix and stroma of chloroplast were the partial of channels. The starch sheath surrounding the pyrenoid was separated into several parts by the connections in transection. Some thylakoids were packed together near the connections in one side of the pyrenoid. Those special structures might be used to transport substance between pyrenoid and stroma of chloroplasts. With the antibody raised against the large subunits of Rubsico from C. protothecoides, the result of the gold immunolocalization of Rubisco in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii showed most of the gold particles heavily labeled the pyrenoid matrix, as well as the starch sheath matrix, and very few in the stroma of chloroplasts. The gold particle density was 880.00 $\pm$ 164.32, 190.00 $\pm$ 152.39 and 9.60 $\pm$ 5.37 ${\mu}m^{-2}$ in pyrenoid matrix, starch sheath and stroma region of chloroplast respectively (background: 5.67 $\pm$ 1.53 ${\mu}m^{-2}$). 99.59% of the total Rubiscos was calculated to be concentrated in the pyrenoid matrix and starch sheath by spatial densities. The gold immunolocalization of Rubisco activase also showed that Rubisco activase was mainly concentrated in the periphery of the pyrenoid and the starch sheath (the density was as high as 229.69 $\pm$ 96.96 ${\mu}m^{-2}$). There were very few gold particles located in the stroma of chloroplasts. These results indicated that pyrenoid surface and starch sheath was the site for Rubisco activation and $CO_2$ fixation, which supported the suggestion that pyrenoids perform photosynthesis function.
