      • An On-line Strategy based on Rolling State Prediction for Hybrid Energy Storage System of Tram

        This paper aims at a hybrid tram with the onboard battery-supercapacitor storage system. This paper proposes an on-line strategy based on rolling state prediction (ROS). A wavelet neural network (WNN) is used to predict the running state of the tram in a certain period of time in the future according to the historic data, and the dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is used to optimize the energy management strategy (EMS) during the period. The strategy aims to optimize the system efficiency and battery life. Compared with classical rule-based (RB) strategy, ROS greatly increases the system efficiency and lengthens lifespan of battery and achieves real-time optimization.

        Overexpression of NPC1L1 in the livers of transgenic Bama miniature pigs accelerates lipid peroxidation

        Although Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1)plays a key role in intestinal cholesterol absorption, regulatingcholesterol metabolism and maintaining cholesterolmetabolic homeostasis, the molecular mechanism ofNPC1L1 in lipid-metabolism disorders leading to liverdisease remains largely unknown. Previous studies haveshown that NPC1L1 is related with the development offatty liver. Therefore, we hypothesized that NPC1L1 playsan important role in lipid-metabolism disorders and liverdisease by affecting the transcription of certain genesinvolved in lipid synthesis. To further elucidate the functionof NPC1L1, especially in the liver, we used somaticcellnuclear transfer to establish transgenic pigs thatexpressed human NPC1L1 in their livers. We investigatedsuperoxide dismutase activities and the levels of free fattyacids and malondialdehyde, a biomarker of lipid peroxidation. Superoxide dismutase activities significantlydecreased, and free fatty acid and malondialdehyde levelssignificantly increased in the NPC1L1 transgenic pigs,indicating that the overexpression of NPC1L1 in the liverresulted in severe lipid peroxidation. Our findings suggestthat NPC1L1 plays an important role in lipid-metabolismdisorders and liver disease.

        fects of Dietary Soy Intake on Maternal Thyroid Functions and Serum Anti-Thyroperoxidase Antibody Level During Early Pregnancy

        Soy and its isoflavones have been suggested to suppress thyroperoxidase (TPO), induce goiter, inhibit deiodinase, and modulate immune functions. This study initially investigated the effects of dietary soy consumption on maternal thyroid functions and anti-TPO antibody (TPOAb) production during early pregnancy. Data were collected through questionnaire from 505 women enrolled during early pregnancy by random sampling in Shenyang, China. Based on soy intake frequency, the subjects were divided into three groups (frequent [three or more times per week], conventional [more than twice per month but less than three times per week], and occasional [two or fewer times per month]). Serum thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT_4), and TPOAb were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Additionally, the concentrations of two primary isoflavones (daidzein and genistein) and creatinine were assessed in the spot urine samples from representative subjects (about 20%) randomly selected from the three groups. The percentages of frequent, conventional, and occasional consumers were 18.6%, 62.6%, and 18.8%, respectively. No difference was found in age, medical records, family history of thyroid diseases, serum FT_4, TSH, and TPOAb levels, TPOAb-positive percentages, or prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions among the groups. Both urinary daidzein and genistein levels were significantly higher in the frequent consumers compared with the other two groups. No correlations were found between urinary isoflavone levels and serum FT_4 or TSH. Urinary isoflavone levels were not significantly different between TPOAb-positive and -negative women among the randomly selected representative subjects. On the whole, our findings suggest dietary soy consumption during early pregnancy is not associated with the development of thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity.

        Microflame diffusion properties of AP/HTPB propellant under binder width effects

        The present study proposes a method to estimate the microflame properties of ammonium perchlorate/hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (AP/HTPB) propellant at different binder widths. A 3D random particle packing is generated by the Monte Carlo method. A transformation from Miller packing to sandwich model is used by the dual slicing technique. The gassolid coupling model and the two-step BDP flame model in the combustion field are established to study the influence of kinetic chemical and fluid diffusion process on the micrflame properties. Finally, the mathematical relationships of the burning rate br and the final flame height H 3on the HTPB thickness D are obtained by analyzing and fitting combustion processes of multiple AP/HTPB propellants, namely, b+1.22D 2 -13.07D+67.73.

        BMB Reports : Poly(ADP-ribose) protects vascular smooth muscle cells from oxidative DNA damage

        Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo death during atherosclerosis, a widespread cardiovascular disease. Recent studies suggest that oxidative damage occurs in VSMCs and induces atherosclerosis. Here, we analyzed oxidative damage repair in VSMCs and found that VSMCs are hypersensitive to oxidative damage. Further analysis showed that oxidative damage repair in VSMCs is suppressed by a low level of poly (ADP-ribosyl)ation (PARylation), a key post-translational modification in oxidative damage repair. The low level of PARylation is not caused by the lack of PARP-1, the major poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase activated by oxidative damage. Instead, the expression of poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase, PARG, the enzyme hydrolyzing poly(ADP-ribose), is significantly higher in VSMCs than that in the control cells. Using PARG inhibitor to suppress PARG activity facilitates oxidative damage-induced PARylation as well as DNA damage repair. Thus, our study demonstrates a novel molecular mechanism for oxidative damage-induced VSMCs death. This study also identifies the use of PARG inhibitors as a potential treatment for atherosclerosis.         The Correlation between Thyrotropin and Dyslipidemia in a Population-based Study

        This study investigated the relationship between serum thyrotrophin levels and dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects. A total of 110 subjects with subclinical hypothyroidism and 1,240 euthyroid subjects enrolled in this study. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism had significantly lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than those who were euthyroid. The lipid profiles were each categorized and mean thyrotrophin levels were higher in subjects in the dyslipidemia subclasses than subjects in the normal subclasses. Thyrotrophin was positively associated with serum triglyceride and negatively associated with serum HDL-C in women. Thyrotrophin was also positively associated with total cholesterol (TC) in the overweight population along with TC and LDL-C in overweight women. In the euthyroid population, thyrotrophin was positively associated with TC in the overweight population. In conclusion, serum thyrotrophin was correlated with dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects; the correlation was independent of insulin sensitivity.

        Case Study on Tunnel Settlement Calculations during Construction Considering Shield Disturbance

        Shield construction in structural soft soils inevitably disturbs the soil around the tunnel leading to tunnel settlement instead of tunnel uplift due to soil unloading rebound during construction. In this paper, tunnel settlement prediction in structural soft soils during construction has been studied by adopting Oujiang Beikou shield tunnel as an example. Firstly, disturbance degree calculation method based on effective stress was introduced and the disturbance degree due to shield construction was numerically simulated. Secondly, combined with one-dimensional consolidation test results, a “two-fold line” settlement calculation model was developed for disturbed soil. Finally, tunnel settlement during construction was predicted through one-way compression layer-summation method and compared with experimentally measured results. Research results demonstrated that the developed method was suitable for the prediction of shield tunnel settlement in structural soft soils.
