        A Novel Effect of Lipids Extracted from Vernix Caseosa on Regulation of Filaggrin Expression in Human Epidermal Keratinocytes

        Background: Vernix caseosa (VC), which is known as a unique human substance, is a biofilm that covers the skin of most human newborns. VC has many biological functions including anti-infective, skin cleansing and skin barrier repair. Objective: In the study, we purpose to investigate the novel effect of lipids extracted from VC on the regulation of filaggrin (FLG) expression and anti-inflammation in normal human epidermal keratinocyte (NHEK) cells. Methods: The lipids were extracted by chloroform/methanol (Folch method) and the major properties of fatty acid methyl esters were determined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The relative viability of NHEK cells was evaluated by Cell Counting Kit 8 assay. The related expression of skin barrier protein was accessed with real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blot and Immunofluorescence in NHEK cells with or without poly (I:C). Meanwhile, the changes of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) are analyzed by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay. Results: VC lipids mostly contained saturated and branched chains fatty acids. The expression of mRNA and protein of FLG were significantly increased after the supplement with lipid in NHEK cells. Meanwhile, lipids reversed the inhibition of poly (I:C) on FLG. Moreover, lipids suppressed the over secretion of TSLP and TNF-α induced by poly (I:C). Conclusion: These results indicate that lipids extracted from VC has positive effects on the expression of FLG and anti-inflammation, suggesting that lipids of VC may be used for a reference for novel therapeutic method in reducing and remedying skin disease like atopic disease.         Impact of Synoptic Weather Types on Ground-Level Ozone Concentrations in Guangzhou, China

        Although precursor concentrations were reduced by emission control in Guangzhou, southern China from 2006 to 2016, ground-level O3 concentrations increased, forming potential risks to human health. This study explored the impacts of large-scale synoptic weather circulations on O3 concentration in Guangzhou, in a particular focus on high O3 pollution episodes. Twelve local weather types were clustered based on Lamb-Jenkinson weather types (LWTs). Analyses showed that LWTs strongly impacted daily O3 concentrations: A, AS, CN, and N+ weather types were likely associated with high ozone concentrations, while the ozone levels were relatively low under C, CE, CS, and S+ types. LWTs could explain 30–40% of the inter-annual variability of O3 concentration during the dry season. Numerical model simulations further demonstrated that continuous type A weather was the leading LWT correlated with high O3 concentrations, while type C weather was the predominant type correlated with low O3 concentrations. CMIP5 model results showed that occurrences of weather type A would increase by about 25% in the high emission scenario over the 2020–2069 period, which might worsen the O3 pollution in Guangzhou in the future. The increase in frequency weather type A would not be significant under the low emission scenario during the same period. Therefore, we should strictly implement the global emission reduction plan to prevent the change of weather circulation caused by climate change from aggravating ozone pollution in the future. The strong link between O3 concentrations and LWT frequencies makes the daily occurrence of LWTs a useful predictor for episodes of high O3 pollution and makes annual frequencies of LWTs good indicators of the inter-annual variability of the O3 concentration. These results are useful in efforts to predict O3 concentrations, providing a reliable weather forecast is available.

        Ambient noise surface wave tomography of Quaternary structures derived from a high-density array in the central Hebei Depression, North China

        Internal structure imaging of the Earth, along with determining basin structure, can aid in evaluating potential seismic hazards. However, the high operating cost limits the current geophysical exploration methods; moreover, it is difficult to apply these techniques over a large area, which limits our understanding of the Quaternary structure and the development of earthquake prevention science. A combination of dense array observation technology and ambient noise surface wave tomography is being rapidly developed as a high-resolution urban detection method. Here, we report the ambient noise imaging results of a high-density array experiment. In the ambient noise surface wave tomography method (e.g., surface wave tomography; Eikonal tomography), the signal is assumed to be a single mode. However, several multimode signals were detected in this dataset. With the use of traditional methods to measure the dispersion, mode confusion occurs and the extracted dispersion curve jumps. To solve this problem, by combining the advantages of phase-matched filtering and dispersion compensation, we realized the automatic pickup of fundamental group velocity using reference phase velocity. From this, a Rayleigh wave group velocity map was obtained. The regional average phase velocity information was included in the inversion steps to reduce the uncertainty in the inversion of shear wave velocity. Finally, an S-wave velocity structure model was obtained within a depth of 500 m. The velocity structure was roughly layered and grew with depth. In the depth range of 240–320 m, obvious decreases in the S-wave velocity were observed. Compared with geothermal drilling data, this was speculated to be the reflection of a water-rich (confined water) sand layer. This study provides a technical approach for and a processing example of a high-density array, and its velocity model can be used as a reference for urban subsurface structure, underground space utilization, and earthquake disaster prevention and control.

        A checklist of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in northern Shaanxi Province, China, with one new species of genus Proformica Ruzsky, 1902

        A preliminary checklist of the ants of northern Shaanxi is presented based on an evaluation from June 2018 to September 2020. Seven species are reported from Shaanxi for the first time: Formica approximans Wheeler, 1933; Formica clara Forel, 1886; Messor aralocaspius (Ruzsky, 1902); Plagiolepis pygmaea (Latreille, 1798); Tapinoma rectinotum Wheeler, 1927; Tetramorium chefketi Forel, 1911; Tetramorium tsushimae Emery, 1925 and Temno thorax ruginosus Zhou, Huang, Yu & Liu, 2010. A new species of genus Proformica Ruzsky, 1902, Proformica muusensis sp. nov., is described based on the morphology and molecular method. In total, three subfamilies with 34 valid ant species in 15 genera are reported in our checklist.

        Effect of IgY on Periodontitis and Halitosis Induced by Fusobacterium nucleatum

        Fusobacterium nucleatum is a morbific agent in periodontitis and halitosis. Egg yolk antibody (IgY) was obtained from egg yolks from chickens stimulated with F. nucleatum. This study was to assess the effectiveness of IgY on periodontitis and halitosis caused by F. nucleatum in vitro and in vivo. The growth of F. nucleatum was inhibited (p <0. 05) by different concentrations of IgY in vitro and the results of a Halimeter show volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) were reduced to 904 ± 57 ppb at a concentration 40 mg/ml of IgY. The changes of fatty acids of F. nucleatum were determined using GC-MS. The scores for odor index of rat saliva were decreased. The major constituent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including short-chain acids decreased 46.2% in 10 mg/ml IgY, ammonia decreased 70% in 40 mg/ml IgY, while aldehydes and olefine ketones were almost unchanged. The ELISA assay revealed that IL-6 and TNF-α were decreased after 4 weeks’ IgY treatment. Morphometric (X-ray) and histological analyses (HE) showed that IgY reduced alveolar bone loss and collagen fibers became orderly in rat models. As a result, IgY may have the potential to treat periodontitis and halitosis.

        Wireless Channel Identification Algorithm Based on Feature Extraction and BP Neural Network

        Effective identification of wireless channel in different scenarios or regions can solve the problems of multipath interference in process of wireless communication. In this paper, different characteristics of wireless channel are extracted based on the arrival time and received signal strength, such as the number of multipath, time delay and delay spread, to establish the feature vector set of wireless channel which is used to train backpropagation (BP) neural network to identify different wireless channels. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately identify different wireless channels, and the accuracy can reach 97.59%.

        Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of human bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and functional subpopulation identification

        Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a common kind of multipotent cell in vivo, but their heterogeneity limits their further applications. To identify MSC subpopulations and clarify their relationships, we performed cell mapping of bone-marrow-derived MSCs through single-cell RNA (scRNA) sequencing. In our study, three main subpopulations, namely, the stemness subpopulation, functional subpopulation, and proliferative subpopulation, were identified using marker genes and further bioinformatic analyses. Developmental trajectory analysis showed that the stemness subpopulation was the root and then became either the functional subpopulation or the proliferative subpopulation. The functional subpopulation showed stronger immunoregulatory and osteogenic differentiation abilities but lower proliferation and adipogenic differentiation. MSCs at different passages or isolated from different donors exhibited distinct cell mapping profiles, which accounted for their corresponding different functions. This study provides new insight into the biological features and clinical use of MSCs at the single-cell level, which may contribute to expanding their application in the clinic.

        Inkjet Printed Quantum Dots Color Conversion Layers for Full-color Micro-LED Displays

        With the ever-growing demands for larger size and high resolution displays, Micro-light-emitting diode (Micro-LED) displaywith quantum dots (QDs) fi lm as color conversion layers (CCLs) has become one of the most promising candidates offuture display for its advantages in low power consumption and wide color range. In this study, we report a novel full-colordisplay based on blue Micro LED, which has patterned red and green QDs color conversion (QDCC) layers fabricated byinkjet printing (IJP). A structure of double-layer bank was designed to reduce color deviation, prevent crosstalk, and fl attenthe QDCC layer. By optimizing the thickness of the red/green QDCC layers and the wavelength of blue Micro LEDbacklights, a full-color QDCC-LED display with 228 PPI resolution and size of 1.11-inch was successfully fabricated andshowed superb performance. We not only eff ectively reduced crosstalk, but also improved the color conversion effi ciency ofQDs. In addition, this QDCC-LED display prepared by embedded bonding process shows a color gamut of 107.53% NTSC.

        Dynamic Compression Behavior of a Mg–Gd-Based Alloy at Elevated Temperature

        The dynamic compression behavior and microstructure evolution at 400 °C of an extruded Mg–8Gd–4Y–Nd–Zr alloy withdifferent tempers were investigated. The peak-aged samples exhibit the highest compressive strength, followed by as-extrudedsamples and over-aged samples. The highest dynamic compressive strength of 582 MPa was achieved by peak-aged samplecompressed at 1224 s−1. The high strength was attributed to the formation of abundant thermally stable βʹ precipitates andsome dynamic precipitates. The dynamic compressive strength of peak-aged sample and over-aged sample is not sensitiveto strain rates, while that of the as-extruded sample is sensitive to strain rates. The dynamic compressive strength of the asextrudedalloy can reach 535 MPa when compressed at 2024 s−1. The high strength was mainly ascribed to the formationof numerous dynamic precipitates and the work hardening effect caused by dislocations. The cracks are composed of crackthat is 45° to loading direction on the cylindrical surface and crack on the compressed surface. Microstructure observationindicates that the crack was easily propagated along the interface between the adiabatic shear band and matrix, grainboundaries. The equilibrium phase β in over-aged sample was unable to hinder the crack propagation.
