Study on fracture characteristics of reinforced concrete wedge splitting tests

Hu Shaowei,XU Aiqing,HU Xin,YIN Yangyang 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2016 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.18 No.3

To study the influence on fracture properties of reinforced concrete wedge splitting test specimens by the addition of reinforcement, and the restriction of steel bars on crack propagation, 7 groups reinforced concrete specimens of different reinforcement position and 1 group plain concrete specimens with the same size factors were designed and constructed for the tests. Based on the double-K fracture criterion and tests, fracture toughness calculation model which was suitable for reinforced concrete wedge splitting tensile specimens has been obtained. The results show that: the value of initial craking load Pini and unstable fracture load Pun decreases gradually with the distance of reinforcement away from specimens’s top. Compared with plain concrete specimens, addition of steel bar can reduce the value of initial fracture toughness KIini, but significantly increase the value of the critical effective crack length ac and unstable fracture toughness KIun. For tensional concrete member, the effect of anti-cracking by reinforcement was mainly acted after cracking, the best function of preventing fracture initiation was when the steel bar was placed in the middle of the crack, and when the reinforcement was across the crack and located away from crack tip, it plays the best role in inhibiting the extension of crack.

      • Study on an Exoskeleton Training Device for Hand Function Rehabilitation

        HU Xin,YU Hong-Liu 한국재활복지공학회 2014 한국재활복지공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.11

Based on the structure and motion bionic principle of the normal adult’s fingers ,the biological characteristics of human hands were analized, and a wearable exoskeleton training device for the hand function rehabilitation of stroke patients or patients with hand trauma was designed. This device includes the exoskeleton mechanical structure and the electromyography(EMG) control system. With adjustable mechanism, the device was capable to fit different finger lengths, and by capturing the EMG of the user’s contralateral limb, the motion state of the exoskeleton hand was controlled. Then driven by the device, the user"s fingers conducting flexion / extension rehabilitation training. Finally, the mechanical properties and training effect of the exoskeleton hand were verified through mechanism simulation and the experiments on experimental prototype of the wearable exoskeleton hand function training device.

      • Mechanical Behaviors of Pile-reinforced Landslides under Reservoir Impoundment Using Physical Model Testing

        ( Xinli Hu ) 대한지질공학회 2019 대한지질공학회 학술발표회논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

Piles have been widely used to stabilize landslides in reservoir area. The interaction between stabilizing piles and landslide body is complicated and is vital for evaluating the long-term safety of landslides and reservoirs. Taking the Majiagou landslide in Hubei Province, China, as a prototype, two physical models with and without piles were constructed with a geometrical similarity ratio of 1:40. The water level in the models was raised and maintained to an elevation of 0.89 m. The deformation, earth pressure, and pore-water pressure of the landslide and the strain of one representative pile were recorded during the tests. The comparison between the model with piles and that without piles shows that: (1) Piles significantly improved the deformation resistance of landslides. Landslides with piles can tolerate a larger deformation before failure and the displacement rate of landslides after failure was reduced; (2) The implantation of piles changed the soil pressure distribution of landslides. The soil pressures at the upslope and around the piles increased while those at the downslope decreased. The distribution of soil pressures along the depth at the uphill and downhill side of the piles changed from triangular to invert triangular and parabolic, respectively; (3) Piles arrested the anticipant slip surface that occurred in an unreinforced landslide, and at least two sliding bands traversed the landslide. (4) Comparison of the pile-reinforced landslide model with those in literature with piles with a much higher stiffness show that the stiffness of piles significantly affects the mechanical interaction between piles and landslides.

Teachers’ Perception and Practice of English Language Teaching Following CLT Approach in Times of Crisis

        Xin Hu,박기용 (사)위기관리이론과실천 2024 Journal of Safety and Crisis Management Vol.14 No.1

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of teachers’ perception and their perceived practice of instructional strategies in the implementation of English language teaching following Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach online in two Chinese universities amid the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The mixed methodology of quantitative and qualitative approaches in crisis management was employed in this study. The data was collected from forty college English teachers through survey questionnaire, a case study, and semi-structured phone-call interview. The findings revealed that almost teachers’ perception and practice had a noticeably positive correlativity with the characteristics of CLT approach, directly manifesting that the three intricate characteristics of online CLT approach: learner-centered approach; four English language skills linked together in teaching process; and authentic materials promoted. Additionally, online group discussion; pair work; and presentation to whole class they’ve experienced are prominently tied. Nevertheless, some online problems and obstacles were likewise illustrated in the crisis management, which probed to be difficultly operated in prolific English language teaching class online: large online class size; lack of students’ active participation; and little time to prepare teaching materials. Pedagogical Implications for the study are that teachers’ perception and practice within the characteristics of CLT approach amid the crisis have meaningful effects on online ELT development in higher education as well as the exhibited issues in class operation profoundly requires consideration to be kept from in college class.

Limiting the wind-induced deflection amplitude of an overhead conductor: establishment of multi-rigid-body model and optimization of structural parameters

Xin Hu,Zhangqi Wang,Rui Tian 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.7

To limit the wind-induced deflection amplitude of an overhead conductor, this study proposes a calculation model and an optimization model for overhead lines. According to the geometric deformation relationship and the principle of energy conservation, a multi-rigidbody model (MRBM) is proposed for the wind-induced deflection of the overhead lines. An aeroelastic model wind tunnel test was designed to verify the accuracy of the MRBM; the efficiency of the MRBM was verified through comparison with the finite element model (FEM). The optimization model is presented, and the structural parameters of the transmission lines in the actual project are optimized and analyzed. The results show that the accuracy of the MRBM can meet engineering requirements; the solution time is shorter than FEM, and the MRBM is easily called by the optimization algorithm. The structural parameter optimization effectively limits the deflection amplitude of the overhead conductor according to the engineering requirements.

Impact of Phonics Instruction Application on Phonemic Awareness within Vocabulary and Reading Abilities of Elementary School English Teaching

        Xin Hu,박기용 팬코리아영어교육학회 2023 영어교육연구 Vol.35 No.3

This study investigated whether phonemic awareness within vocabulary and reading abilities changed after phonics instruction. Pre-test, treatment of phonics instruction, and post-test were implemented to measure the impact of phonics instruction on English teaching in an elementary school. Fifty Chinese students who performed little English proficiency at the beginning of second grade participated in this study. This study, conducted as a pilot-study before a main one investigating two groups of experimental group and control group, had a quantitative experiment design for a group of fifty students exploring Pre-test and Post-test effects of two different conditions: phonemic awareness within vocabulary and reading abilities, respectively. SPSS 19.0 was employed in quantitative data analysis. Overall, it was proved in this pilot-study that the EFL learners who experienced phonics instruction class had more meaningful improvement and higher average scores on their vocabulary and reading abilities. From the test results and the interviews with the students and their parents, it is indicated that the EFL learners’ phonemic awareness within reading and vocabulary abilities has been increased. At pre-test, no students performed well in 1) reading short passages as a test of authentic word pronunciation and phonemic awareness in distinguishing words within monograms and 2) oral English test examining English conversation and also vocabulary recognition. At post-test, the average scores of the students with phonics instruction class were improved meaningfully by around 10% in the two different individual conditions (reading and vocabulary abilities) that the ones in the Pre-test. Implications in this study are that phonics instruction would be needed for increasing phonemic awareness as well as the significance of phonics instruction in English language teaching. (270 words)
