청소년의 성역할 정체감 유형이 외모인식과 만족도에 미치는 영향 -부산지역 고등학생을 중심으로- = Gender-Role Identity Types and Its Impacts on Appearance Recognition and Satisfaction among Adolescents -Focused on High School Students in Busan-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Although it is quite obvious that the increasing interest in appearance is closely related to gender-role identity, previous studies in this area have been rarely performed. Thus, this study aims to provide foundational data and insight to develop educational and social programs that can allow adolescents to have sound recognition of appearance in this social environments in which lookism is widespread. The data were collected from 871 students with the second graders at six high schools (three academic high schools & three vocational high schools) in Busan, using a questionnaire survey. The results of the study are summarized as below: First, gender-role identity of high school students in this study can be classified into four types: androgyny, masculinity, femininity, and undifferentiation. The most frequent type in this study was the undifferentiated, and the next was androgyny, femininity, and masculinity in order. Second, with regard to appearance recognition and satisfaction among high school students, it was indicated that those students had much interests in their appearance but did not quite satisfy with it. Third, it was found that the significant variables on the appearance recognition among adolescents were gender and androgyny type. That is, male students and the androgyny tended to have more positive recognition about their appearance. Finally, the most significant variables that had a positive impact on the appearance satisfaction among the adolescents was the androgyny type. In addition, gender and economic level showed the significant effects on the appearance satisfaction. That is, male students and students with higher economic levels indicated more satisfaction in their appearance.
