This study is conducted to categorize the sample according to the sex role identity and the interests in the opposite sex of high school male students, to make out any differences of the appearance making attitude by the categorization, and then to analyse and identify that the image men desire these days is changing in more positive ways, free from the stereotypes that "Men's appearance should be like this", consisted by the sex role identity of the past.
The subjects of this study are 600 high school male students in Gwang- Ju who are selected from four high schools. For this study, data have collected from November 18 to 21, 2005, using questionnaire, and the 574 data are used for the analyzation except incomplete answers.
To analyze the collected data, SPSS 12.0 for window program is used, and these data are verified by the factor analysis, the cluster analysis, ANOVA, Duncan-test, t-test, x2-test and the technical statistic analysis.
The result is as follows.
1. High school male students were classified by the sex role identify into four groups, that is masculine, feminine, androgynous and undifferentiated inclination. The male students who go to the mixed school, academic or see someone are apparently apt to have androgynous.
2. The appearance making attitude of the boys' highschool students is classified into four: clothing, body, face and hair care. The differences of the appearance making attitude according to the sex role identity show that androgynous group has a positive attitude to clothing, body, face and hair care, whereas undifferentiated inclination group has the most negative attitude.
3. The boys’ highschool students who have less interests in the opposite sex are the most positive to the appearance making attitude and particularly to the clothing care and there is a clear distinction between the students with much interests and little.
4. The interaction between the sex role identity and the interests in the opposite sex has a similar effect on clothing, face and hair care, and among the students who have androgynous and great interests in the opposite sex show more positive attitudes.
5. It appears that academic high school students are more positive to the appearance making attitude, especially to the clothing care than vocational high school students. The more students receive pocket money, the more they take active interests in the clothing care, particularly to the face or the hair care. The students, moreover, who spend more money to buy their clothes and are seeing someone(or have once before) take up more positive attitudes to the appearance than others.
