      • 일본 영어 교과서의 문화내용에 대한 분석 연구

        김승희,이화연 이화영어학회 2009 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.13

A Study of Cultural Contents in Middle School English Textbooks. Journal of English Linguistics, 13, pp. 5-19. The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural contents of Japanese middle school English textbooks. The results of the study show that the cultural contents of English textbooks in Japan have been changed in a positive way but still need to be improved. The results of this study are as follows: First, the result of investigation shows that ‘spiritual’ culture occupied the great part of the topics in the textbooks. Second, when the textbooks were analyzed in terms of nationality, ‘neutral’ culture showed the highest distribution in Japan. Especially, neutral culture was included 42% in the Japanese textbooks, whereas British and American cultures were included only 7% in them. This is attributed to the fact that the cultural contents of British and American which students can often meet in their English textbooks were not enough to learn English. Japan textbooks included relatively various contents in British and American cultures. Third, English textbooks in Japan have various cultures of the other countries and interesting frameworks which attract the interests of students. The cultural information of Japanese textbooks is presented in the effective ways. (Myongji University)

      • 영어 어말 묵음 <e>

金 明淑 이화영어학회 1999 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.4

The English final silent vowel <e>. performs at least four different functions. It indicates the phonetic vowel and consonant correspondences (the phonemic function), avoids the occurrence of certain letters in the final position of words (the graphemic function), marks the non-morphemic <-s> (the morphemic function) and represents the origins and etymological backgrounds of words (the etymological function), as closely examined in this paper. The final <e> deletion rule, the dropping of <e> before vowel initial suffixes, is also reanalyzed in this paper and the exceptions to the rule are attributed to the following four reasons: to eliminate homographs, to indicate correct pronunciation, to suggest proper morphemic analysis and to maintain the rhythmic structure of a binary foot.

      • 청소년문학을 사용한 영어 읽기학습

최재영 이화영어학회 2009 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.13

Learning English reading with youth literature. Journal of English Linguistics, 13, pp. 53-79. This paper examines possibilities of employing the English youth literature in reading programs in Korean middle school English classrooms. For the purpose, the principles and methods of foreign language acquisition, especially written language learning and literature-based language learning are examined. Then, with caution the study proposes English learning activities accompanying youth literature reading using three English youth novels awarded the Newbery medal. Finally, this paper concludes with recommendations for middle school English teachers on implementation of literature-based English reading classes in middle school. (Hongik University)

      • Intercultural Communication and Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT)

Lee, Seung Jae 이화영어학회 2009 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.13

Intercultural Communication and Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT). Journal of English Linguistics, 13, pp. 37-51. This paper introduces culture trips, specifically those destined abroad, conducted by high school students as a part of school work. Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT) is a special moment for the students, a unique experience of new culture and the unknown place, and an exciting memory with peers. From the communication perspective, Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT) is effective for cultural understanding and intercultural communication, as shown in the survey result. Additionally, from the tourism perspective, Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT) has great potential for tourism business. Therefore Student Abroad Culture Trip (SACT) should be further studied to modulate these three perspectives and bring better results. (Kyung Hee University)

      • 모음대추이는 하나의 음변화인가?

김명숙 이화영어학회 1996 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.1

Sometime in the period of Middle English, the English long vowels started to undergo a series of changes, known as the English Great Vowel Shift (GVS, hereafter). The GVS has been traditionally regarded as one chain-shifted change, either by drag chain or by push chain, which preserved the structural coherence through the whole change. In recent years, some scholars raised questions with respect to the unity of the change. They argue for the GVS as a series of independent changes in the process of standardization and the fixing of spelling traditions. In this paper, I will examine the GVS from various theoretical views in order to explore a more plausible explanation for the change.

      • 일상적 인지 체계로서의 환유

김혜경 이화영어학회 1996 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.1

This paper discusses metonymy as an everyday conceptual system. Metonymy serves some of the purposes that metaphor serves, but it allows us to focus more specifically on certain aspects of what is being referred to. It is also like metaphor in the sense that it is not just a poetic or rhetorical device. Metonymic concepts such as THE PART FOR THE WHOLE are part of the ordinary and daily ways in which we think and act as well as talk. I argue that metonymy is not part of mere words and that human thought processes are mainly metonymical.

      • 한정사구 가설

김경희 이화영어학회 1996 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.1

This article deals with the structure of noun phrases Abney(1987) proposes the DP-analysis. He argues that in terms of the similarities between sentences and noun phrases, noun phrases have Infl-like elements intrinsically We can obtain many advantages when we take the DP-analysis, instead of the NP-analysis. X-bar theory plays an important role in the grammar in that it reduces the redundancy problem and obtains the generalization. Under the NP-analysis, there is a violation of X-bar theory in the case of gerundive nominals. However, DP-analysis can give an appropriate explanation for the gerundive nominals. Consequently, DP-analysis is subject to X-bar theory and gets some advantages in comparison with the NP-analysis.

      • An Optimal Analysis for Korean Loanword Phonology

Oh, Mira 이화영어학회 1996 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.1

There have been two major different approaches in formal constraint-based models concerning loanword phonology. One is the Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies (TCRS) and the other is Optimality Theory (OT). In this paper, I argue for OT as opposed to the TCRS, focusing on the adoption of English loanwords into Korean. Furthermore, it is shown that loanword phonology is distinct from native phonology.

      • 경동사 성격에 관한 연구

서영미 이화영어학회 1996 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.1

As the theory of Chomskian's minimalist syntax is developed, the hypothesis of phrase structure is revised as well Especially, Chomsky(1994, 1995) propose phonetically empty verb position, light verb v, beginning with Larson(1988), postulating that every transitive sentence should have light verb v. This paper aims to explain the motivation of positing light verb v in every transitive sentence and to describe the nature of it. To make it explicit the nature of the light verb in verb movement, this study demonstrates an analysis of adverb-adjoined verb sentences in terms of shell structure.
