This paper is to present some short-term and long-term proposals for the general English programs at Hong-Ik University which reflect on current theory and trends in language teaching. Korea, in particular, has recently put great emphasis on globalization in our international world. Three major traditions in the language teaching field are reviewed following the background and purpose of this study. Then guidelines from the Korean Ministry of Education and views about the general English course in the Korean colleges are historically traced. It was found that they show our English education definitely is making efforts not to lag behind the current social demands as well as developments in the language teaching theory, though not satisfactorily. Next come discussions on general English programs of 10 selected universities located around Seoul in the areas of program management office, courses offered, class size, class grouping, textbook, evaluation, teaching personnel, and native speakers. Finally, eight comprehensive proposals for the Hong-Ik genernal English program are offered based on all the preliminary studies above.
Walden, a narrative of Thoreau, was published in 1854. In the spring of 1845 Thoreau built a cabin near Walden Pond, Concord, and convinced that "the mass of men lead lives of quite desperation". He lived there alone from July 4, 1845 to Sep. 6, 1847 in a deliberate attempt to "front the essential facts of life". His years in the woods were not a hermit exstence, but an experiment in living by developing and testing his transcendental philosophy of individualism, self-reliance, and material economy for the sake of spiritual wealth. To sum him up in a phrase, he was a man who lived in doing what he wanted. Walden is composed of eighteen pieces of essays. The Chapter Ⅰ on "Economy" asserts that the only standard of value is in vital experience, and that the complexities of civilization stand in the way of significant living. To escape the demands of society and to realize the best powers of mind and body, Thoreau decides for an ascetic withdrawal from organized society, since in his desire to "live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, he hound that the essential necessity was to simplify, simplify". In the Chapter Ⅱ on "Where I lived, and What I lived For", Thoreau declared he went to the woods because he wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if he could not learn what it had to teach. Among the matters described in subsequent chapters is the practical operation of this economy. The value of Walden, I think, lies in some facts as follows. First, Walden was written about the life that Thoreau experimented in Emerson's thought of self-reliance, and then experienced it himself. Secondly, he revealed for the first time his extensive knowledge and love of nature as an essay in the history of American literature. Thirdly, Walden was expressed in an agile, compact, lucid, and often poetic style, and so it became one of the model styles.
This paper aims at analysing by what the thought of Confucius' propriety is meant and examining what the modern meaning for grasping of it is. The thought of propriety on Confucius grows as a result of deplorable conditions of the time. The propriety, which Confucius asserts, refers not merely to ritual, ceremonies, and manners of actions, but more important than that, to morality which is the ground of conducts. The morality, above all, signifies the principle which regulates the life of whole people. Confucius is certainly the greatest man as an advocator of propriety for humanization. In such a respect, he goes even deeper into the way of human's life. In particular, he believes that the true aim of propriety ought to be the welfare and happiness of the whole people, and that this would be brought about not by the use of force and punishment, but by subtle administration of conducts generally accepted as good and the understanding of morality based on humanity. We can understand that individual man is not separated from public society in Confucius' thought. The individual man consists of a member of public society and the public society is composes of individual man. Such an opinion would be the way in order to solve an estrangement between excessive individualism and totalitarianism in our time. Moreover, one among harmful effect, which is given by the progress of machine civilization, brings about material respect. The material respect makes man be dazzled by material gain. In result of being dazzling by the material gain, moral perfection and social adjustment is in utter confusion. Accordingly, an important matter that merits our sober reflection is to get back our real nature based on morality.

International relations were affected in no little degree by the rise of the Jurchens in East Asia as they built later Chin. Its dependency on agricultural economy and promotion of expansionism resulted in armed conflicts between Ming and Choson dynasty. To evade the political and economic demands urged by later Chin, Choson dynasty employed both hard-line and moderate strategies. During little ice age that hit East Asia hard, the decline in temperature caused a shortage of living necessaries in later Chin. In an effort to solve the economic difficulties, it imposed plunderous trade on Choson dynasty by force. However, later Chin's excessive demand induced Choson dynasty to toughen its pro-Ming, anti-Manchupolicy, which provoked later Chin and became one of causes of the Manchu invasions. The political and military goal of later Chin's invasion of Choson was to coerce Choson dynasty to scrap its pro-Ming, anti-Manchu policy. In terms of economy, the aggression was also aimed at deporting the Han Chinese refugees, ensuring slave labor and steady income through tribute, coercing unfair trade, and preventing economic loss caused by border incursions. The Manchu invasions could be attributed to the ecological deterioration of East Asia from the sixteenth to seventeenth centuries followed by economic crisis and later Chin's expansionism to resolve it.

The Restoration comedy has another name "comedy of manners." The comedy of manners is a type of drama, which deals mainly with high society manners. It does not simply describe the society, but criticiazes it; it attacks hypocrisy and corruption of the high society. This paper discusses the development of the comedy of manners and analyze two plays of two playwrights of the Restoration period. The writer argues that in Etherege's play there are attacks on the high society and that in Wycherley's attacks on the humanity itself as well as those on the high society are found.
The purpose of this study was to make a self-evaluation of the educational process of specialty high schools in the field of alternative education in an attempt to boost the accountability of charter of teachers and to have the quality of educational process in control. An evaluation model was used to assess specialty high schools according to evaluation standard and criteria that were selected in light of the diversity and variableness of alternative school curriculum. As a result, 'the ideals and objects of alternative education(64.5%),' 'school management structure(57.0%),' 'school performance(54.4%),' and 'an intensity of efforts for finding workable alternatives(44.3%)' rated high. When a posttest was conducted, the opinions of the teachers investigated were statistically significantly different at the p<.05 level of significance from those of the assistant principles and principals investigated about 'the publicness-oriented objectives of school foundation and school charter' and 'a perpetual search by teachers for alternatives.' According to the findings of the study, it's required to offer a variety of 'alternative courses' and develop systematic teaching materials in order to provide more specialized speciality alternative education. Teachers should take pride in providing speciality alternative education and have a firm belief in it, and a diagnosis of accountability is requested in relation to making an exception to the operation of specialty high schools providing alternative education and of schools that are given a free hand in offering that education. Besides, it should clearly be specified that the goal of specialty high school evaluation in the area of alternative education is improving accountability of charter. As for the direction for and content of assessment, that should be done in pursuit of good alternative civilization, excellent alternative education, higher specialty and democratic school management. An organization that administers the assessment should be supervised by a third research institute or alternative education council. In regard to evaluation method, a quantitative evaluation that just focuses on outward accomplishments should be avoided, and the kind of method that is supportive, encouraging and presents feasible alternatives should be adopted.
