Physicochemical properties of a calcium aluminate cement containing nanoparticles of zinc oxide

da Rosa Amanda Freitas,Amaral Thuany Schmitz,Paz Dotto Maria Eduarda,Goulart Taynara Santos,Rossetto Hebert Luís,Bortoluzzi Eduardo Antunes,Teixeira Cleonice da Silveira,Garcia Lucas da Fonseca Robert 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.1

Objectives This study evaluated the effect of different nanoparticulated zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) and conventional-ZnO ratios on the physicochemical properties of calcium aluminate cement (CAC). Materials and Methods The conventional-ZnO and nano-ZnO were added to the cement powder in the following proportions: G1 (20% conventional-ZnO), G2 (15% conventional-ZnO + 5% nano-ZnO), G3 (12% conventional-ZnO + 3% nano-ZnO) and G4 (10% conventional-ZnO + 5% nano-ZnO). The radiopacity (Rad), setting time (Set), dimensional change (Dc), solubility (Sol), compressive strength (Cst), and pH were evaluated. The nano-ZnO and CAC containing conventional-ZnO were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Radiopacity data were analyzed by the 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni tests (p < 0.05). The data of the other properties were analyzed by the ANOVA, Tukey, and Fisher tests (p < 0.05). Results The nano-ZnO and CAC containing conventional-ZnO powders presented particles with few impurities and nanometric and micrometric sizes, respectively. G1 had the highest Rad mean value (p < 0.05). When compared to G1, groups containing nano-ZnO had a significant reduction in the Set (p < 0.05) and lower values of Dc at 24 hours (p < 0.05). The Cst was higher for G4, with a significant difference for the other groups (p < 0.05). The Sol did not present significant differences among groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions The addition of nano-ZnO to CAC improved its dimensional change, setting time, and compressive strength, which may be promising for the clinical performance of this cement.

Tucumã (Astrocaryum aculeatum) Prevents Oxidative and DNA Damage to Retinal Pigment Epithelium Cells

Beatriz da Silva Rosa Bonadiman,Cláudia Chaves,Charles Elias Assmann,Grazielle Castagna Cezimbra Weis,Audrei de Oliveira Alves,Amanda Leitão Gindri,Cláudio Chaves,Ivana Beatrice Mânica da Cruz,Ariane 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.10

Eye diseases have a negative impact on the eyesight quality of the world population. The age-related macular degeneration (AMD) draws special attention since it is a chronic disorder characterized by oxidative and inflammatory damage to the retinal epithelial pigment, which triggers progressive vision loss. In the Brazilian Amazon, Astrocaryum aculeatum is an Amazonian fruit (Tucumã) used by riverside communities in traditional medicine to treat a number of ailments. These communities have recently shown to have increased longevity and reduced prevalence of age-related morbidity. Thus, the aim of this research was to chemically characterize and analyze the in vitro antioxidant effect and molecular damage prevention of the Tucumã ethanolic extract in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells in a model for AMD. The extract was chemically characterized by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode-array detection and mass spectrophotometry (HPLC-DAD-MS). In vitro protocols were performed, and the cytopreventive effect of Tucumã on RPE cells exposed to high concentrations of superoxide anion, an oxidant and genotoxic molecule, as well as the effect of Tucumã extract on oxidative and molecular makers were assessed. Biochemical and flow cytometry analyses were conducted in these protocols. The extract presents high concentrations of caffeic acid, gallic acid, catechin, luteolin, quercetin, and rutin. Treatment did not show cytotoxic effects in cells treated only with extract at 50 μg/mL. In fact, it improved cell viability and was able to prevent necrosis and apoptosis, and oxidative and molecular damage was significantly reduced. In summary, Tucumã is an important Amazon fruit, which seems to contribute significantly to improve human health conditions, as our findings suggest that its extract has a relevant chemical matrix rich in antioxidant molecules, and its consumption could improve eye health and contribute to prevention against oxidative stress through cytoprevention, reactive oxygen species reduction, and maintenance of DNA integrity in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells.

Maxillary sinus volumetric changes in jet aircraft pilots: A multislice computed tomography pilot study

Silva Yeda da,Munhoz Luciana,Filho José Rodrigues Parga,Damasceno Andreza Gomes,da Rosa Cesar Felipe França,Zukovski Eduardo Bilaqui,Teng Erik Zhu,de Castro Cláudio Campi 대한영상치의학회 2023 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.53 No.1

Purpose: This study evaluated maxillary sinus volume changes in military jet aircraft pilot candidates before and after the training program, in comparison with a control group, considering the effects of pressurization, altitude, and total flight hours, through multislice computed tomography. Materials and Methods: Fifteen fighter pilots were evaluated before initiating the training program and after the final approval. The control group consisted of 41 young adults who had not flown during their military career. The volumes of each maxillary sinus were measured individually before and at the end of the training program. Results: When comparing the initial and final volumes in the pilots, a statistically significant increase was observed both in the left and right maxillary sinuses. When evaluating the average total volume of the maxillary sinuses (i.e., the average volume of the right and left maxillary sinuses together), a significant increase in the volume of the maxillary sinuses was observed in the pilot group when compared to the control group. Conclusion: The maxillary sinus volumes in aircraft pilot candidates increased after the 8-month training program. This may be explained by changes in the gravitational force, the expansion of gas, and positive pressure from oxygen masks. This unprecedented investigation among pilots might lead to other investigations considering paranasal sinus alterations in this singular population.

Moreira Rosa Maria,Rosário Rhaynara Coelho,Boggiss Érika Almeida,Lima Rosana Aparecida de,Silva Paula Aparecida,Silva Karol Priscila da,Farias Caroline Lima de,Santos Vanessa de Queiroz dos,Silva Josi 사단법인약침학회 2023 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.16 No.4

Background: Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of chronic, generalized muscular pain, accompanied by sleep disturbances, fatigue and cardic autonomic dysfunction that will affect the quality of life. There is currently no gold standard treatment. There are limitations of studies with electroacupuncture in auricular acupuncture. Objectives: We evaluate the effects of systemic electroacupuncture (EA) with frequencies of 2/100 Hz associated of auricular acupuncture with a Nogier frequency (2.28, 4.56 and 9.12 Hz) for pain intensity, heart rate variability (HRV), and quality of life in fibromyalgia. Methods: Randomized clinical trial, a pilot study. Eighteen volunteers were randomized into a control group (CG, n = 9) and an experimental group (EG, n = 9). Six systemic EA sessions systemic and auricular were applied in the EG for 20 min, twice a week, for six weeks consecutive. The Numerical Pain Assessment Scale (NPRS), 2010 diagnostic criteria of the American College of Rheumatology (FDC 2010), Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and analysis of HRV were the instruments used. The independent t-test compared to the groups was applied. Results: There was no statistically significant difference for the primary outcome for NPRS (p > 0.05). In the secondary outcome there was a significant difference in the total score and in some FIQ domains (p = 0.008) and some variables such as pain (p = 0.02) and anxiety (p = 0.006). There was no significant difference for the FDC 2010 and HRV variables (p > 0.05). Conclusion: 2/100 Hz systemic EA associated with the Nogier frequency positively influenced some quality of life variables; however, pain intensity, diagnostic criteria, and HRV variables did not change.

Genotoxic and Antigenotoxic Potential of Momordica charantia Linn (Cucurbitaceae) in the Wing Spot Test of Drosophila melanogaster

Zaira Rosa Guterres,Thalita Alves Zanetti,Tiago Felipe Sennes-Lopes,Ana Francisca Gomes da Silva 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.10

Momordica charantia, popularly known as bitter melon, is a plant widely used in ethnobotanical medicine. It has antibacterial, antifungal, anthelmintic, antidiabetic, antiviral, and antimalarial activities, among others. The goal of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic and/or antigenotoxic activity of the aqueous extracts obtained from the aerial parts and fruit of this plant by means of the Drosophila melanogaster wing spot test. Third-stage larvae that obtained standard (ST) cross and high bioactivation (HB) cross were treated with aqueous extracts of the aerial parts (IQA) and fruit (IQF) of M. charantia, following two protocols (genotoxicity and antigenotoxicity). The aqueous extracts are not genotoxic in lower concentrations. The frequencies of mutant spots observed in the descendants of the ST and HB crosses treated with doxorubicin (DXR) alone were 8.65 and 9.25, respectively, whereas in those cotreated with IQA and DXR, the frequencies ranged from 15.90 to 29 in the ST cross and from 15.05 to 24.78 in the HB cross. In cotreatment with IQF, the frequencies ranged from 30.10 to 30.65 in the ST cross and from 13.60 to 14.50 in the HB cross, whereas the frequencies obtained with DXR were 32.50 in the ST cross and 26.00 in the HB cross. In conclusion, the IQA has a synergistic effect, enhancing the genotoxicity of DXR in the ST cross and the HB cross, whereas the IQF has antigenotoxic effects in the HB cross.

      • Poster Session : PS 0653 ; Respiratory Medicine ; Organizing Pneumonia and Cytomegalovirus Infection

( Vania Gomes ),( Rosa Macedo Carvalho ),( Maria Joao Ferreira Da Silva ),( Ceu Rodrigues ),( Antonio Oliveira E Silva ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Objective: Organizing pneumonia is a diffuse interstitial lung disease. Secondary organizing pneumonia can be seen in association with various diseases, including infections. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a human herpesvirus that has as peculiar characteristic its capacity of latency. The clinical disease is rare in immunocompetents individuals. Methods: Revision of one clinical case. Results: A 54 years old male, with known diabetes mellitus, was admitted to the emergency room due to rest dyspnoea, productive cough and fever. These symptoms were preceded by the acute onset of a fi u-like illness with odynophagia, nonproductive cough, diarrheal stools and fatigue. He was discharged with empiric antibiotics and low dose prednisolone. On the seventh day, he was readmitted with persistent fever, mild hemoptysis and pleuritic bilateral chest pain. He presented hypoxemic with severe acute respiratory failure, requiring noninvasing ventilation. The chest radiograph revealed bilateral, diffuse and consolidative opacities. Different antibiotics were started. There was no microbiological isolation. As an inpatient, he improved clinically and was discharged after 17 days. After fi ve days, he was readmitted with the same clinical picture. The high resolution computerized axial tomography showed extensive bilateral disease consistent with organizing pneumonia: small nodular opacities in a subpleural location, patchy air-space consolidation and ground glass diffuse opacities. He was medicated with prednisolone 1mg/kg/day. Viral serologies were performed and revealed active acute infection with CMV. The bronchoalveolar lavage showed a predominance of lymphocytes and CMV was isolated. He began oral valciclovir and was discharged after 10 days with no symptoms. After 4 weeks, the dose of glucocorticoid was tapered, the patient remained asymptomatic and serological conversion of CMV titles was confi rmed. Conclusions: We describe a rare case of organizing pneumonia in a diabetic male who was pharmacology immunosuppressed after initial symptoms. As the patient improved, no lung biopsy was performed.

State of the Art of Biodegradable Nanofluids Application in Machining Processes

Vitor Baldin,Leonardo Rosa Ribeiro da Silva,Alisson Rocha Machado,Celso Ferraz Houck 한국정밀공학회 2023 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.10 No.5

For ecological and health issues of those involved in the manufacturing, usage, handling, and disposal of cutting fluids, research has been developed for scientific and technological advances in biodegradable cutting fluids, application methods, and solid nanolubricants. Using a minimum quantity of lubricant (MQL) in machining processes proved to be a viable alternative to replacing low-pressure jet machining. Nanoparticles from 5 to 100 nm in size are usually dispersed in vegetable-based cutting fluid; this combination improves the tribological properties of the nanofluid and the machinability of metal alloys like steel, titanium, nickel, and aluminum alloys, with reduced cutting forces, cutting temperature, tool wear and workpiece surface roughness. This work aims to present an updated summary of the lubrication and cooling action provided by using the MQL technique, biodegradable cutting fluids applied by MQL, the use of nanoparticles added to the cutting fluids, and the physical properties of nanoparticles, tribological characteristics, and the behavior of the nanofluids. The changes in machining force, cutting temperature, surface integrity, and wear of cutting tools with biodegradable nano-cutting fluids are also focused on. The use of nanoparticles in cutting fluids associated with MQL application has shown an increase in the lubricating and coolant properties of cutting fluids, which contribute to the reduction of machining force, cutting temperature, workpiece surface roughness, coefficient of friction, and wear of cutting tools. Thus, the results of this summary can provide theoretical support and experimental guidance for exploring the lubricating and cooling properties and the mechanism present in film formation with nanofluids at the chip-too-workpiece interfaces. Knowledge of such phenomena helps to popularize an eco-friendly practice in metal-mechanic industries.

Influence of the root canal filling technique on the success rate of primary endodontic treatments: a systematic review

        Marconi Daniel Feijolo,da Silva Giovana Siocheta,Weissheimer Theodoro,Silva Isadora Ames,Só Gabriel Barcelos,Jahnke Leonardo Thomasi,Skupien Jovito Adiel,Só Marcus Vinicius Reis,da Rosa Ricardo Abreu 대한치과보존학회 2022 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.47 No.4

Objectives This study aimed to investigate the influence of different obturation techniques compared to cold lateral compaction on the success rate of primary non-surgical endodontic treatments. Materials and Methods Systematic searches were performed for studies published up to May 17th, 2022 in MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, and Grey Literature Reports. Randomized clinical trials and nonrandomized (nonrandomized clinical trials, prospective or retrospective) studies that evaluated the success rate of primary non-surgical endodontic treatments obturated with the cold lateral compaction (control) and other obturation techniques were included. The revised Cochrane risk of bias tools for randomized trials (RoB 2) and nonrandomized studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) were used to evaluate the risk of bias. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. Results Eleven studies (4 randomized clinical trials (RCTs), 4 prospective, and 3 retrospectives) were included. Two RCTs were classified as having some concerns risk of bias and 2 as a low risk of bias. Two nonrandomized studies were classified as having a critical risk of bias and 5 as having a moderate risk of bias. The GRADE analysis demonstrated a very low to moderate certainty of evidence. Conclusions This systematic review generally evidenced no differences in the success rate of primary non-surgical endodontic treatments when the cold lateral compaction technique and other obturation techniques are performed. Further well-designed studies are still necessary.

      • CONCEPTUALIZING INTERACTION PROCESSES THROUGH THE LENS OF POSITION, IDENTITY AND ROLE

Sharon Purchase,Ray Da Silva Rosa 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.7

This research examines the influence of network position, identity construction and role playing within business to business (B2B) interactions processes. The framework used as the basis for considering interaction processes developed from the AAR model (H?kansson & Snehota, 1995) and includes: accessing resources; developing actor bonds and conducting activities. There has been little research conducted into network position (Abrahamsen et al., 2012; Schepis et al., 2014); identity construction (Huemer, 2013; Schepis et al., 2014) and role playing (Abrahamsen et al., 2012; Lowe et al., 2012). This research develops a framework for incorporating all three concepts into the interaction process, rather than investigating them individually or paired, commonly undertaken in previous research. The research is conducted within an interpretive paradigm with 20 interviews conducted within the junior mining industry in Western Australia. Interviews were analysed using Leximancer™ and a comparison of the perceptions from companies playing different roles within the network examined. Results highlight that network position is influenced through accessing resources and developing actor bonds; identity construction occurs through developing actor bonds and conducting activities and role playing occurs when conducting activities and accessing resources. A theoretical framework highlights each of the above concepts within the framework of interaction processes. The value of this paper is that the each of these concepts is influenced through different aspects of the interaction process. Thus, highlighting which aspects of the interactions processes managers can adapt to improve their network position, identity construction and role perceptions.
