A 3D analytical model for the probabilistic characteristics of self-healing model for concrete using spherical microcapsule

        He-hua Zhu,Shuai Zhou,Zhi-guo Yan,Woody Ju,Qing Chen 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2015 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.15 No.1

In general, cracks significantly deteriorate the in-situ performance of concrete members and structures, especially in urban metro tunnels that have been embedded in saturated soft soils. The microcapsule self-healing method is a newly developed healing method for repairing cracked concrete. To investigate the optimal microcapsule parameters that will have the best healing effect in concrete, a 3D analytical probability healing model is proposed; it is based on the microcapsule self-healing method’s healing mechanism, and its purpose is to predict the healing efficiency and healing probability of given cracks. The proposed model comprehensively considers the radius and the volume fraction of microcapsules, the expected healing efficiency, the parameters of cracks, the broken ratio and the healing probability. Furthermore, a simplified probability healing model is proposed to facilitate the calculation. Then, a Monte Carlo test is conducted to verify the proposed 3D analytical probability healing model. Finally, the influences of microcapsules’ parameters on the healing efficiency and the healing probability of the microcapsule self-healing method are examined in light of the proposed probability model.

Design of potent, non-toxic anticancer peptides based on the structure of the antimicrobial peptide, temporin-1CEa

        Qing-Zhu Yang,Che Wang,Lei Lang,Yang Zhou,He Wang,De-Jing Shang 대한약학회 2013 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.36 No.11

Recent advances in the search for novel anticanceragents have indicated that the positively chargedantimicrobial peptides have emerged as promising agentsoffering several advantages over the conventional anticancerdrugs. As a naturally occurring, cationic, a-helicalantimicrobial peptide, temproin-1CEa has been proved toexhibit a potent anticancer effect and a moderate hemolyticactivity. In order to reduce the hemolytic activity of temporin-1CEa and improve its anticancer potency towards arange of human breast cancer cells, in the present study, sixanalogs of temporin-1CEa were rationally designed andsynthesized. The amphipathicity levels and a-helicalstructural patterns of peptides were reserved, while theircationic property and hydrophobicity were changed. Theresults of MTT and hemolysis assay indicated that theanalog peptides displayed an improved anticancer activityand showed an overall optimized therapeutic index. Thehydrophobicity of peptides was positively correlated withtheir hemolytic and antitumor activities. Moreover, the datasuggest a strategy of increasing the cationicity whilemaintaining the moderate hydrophobicity of naturallyoccurring amphipathic a-helical peptides to generate analogswith improved cytotoxicity against tumor cells butdecreased activity against non-neoplastic cells such ashuman erythrocytes. This work highlights the potential forrational design and synthesis of improved antimicrobialpeptides that have the capability to be used therapeuticallyfor treatment of cancers.

Transovarial Transmission of Bombyx mori Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus in the Silkworm

Xiao, Qing-Li,Zhang, Zhi-Fang,Yi, Yong-Zhu,He, Jia-Lu Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2001 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.2 No.2

Whether Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) can be transmitted to offspring, has been a noticeable question for a long time. When fifth instar larvae of the silkworm were orally inoculated with BmNPV dot hybridization and PCR amplification analysis demonstrated that BmNPV was not detected in the eggs laid by BmNPV productively infected female moths. The results indicated that BmNPV could not be transovarially transmitted.

      • Liver Cancer Mortality Trends during the Last 30 Years in Hebei province: Comparison Results from Provincial Death Surveys Conducted in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and 2004-2005

Xu, Hong,He, Yu-Tong,Zhu, Jun-Qing Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5

Background and Aims: Liver cancer is a major health problem in low-resource countries. Approximately 55% of all liver cancer occurs in China. Hebei Province is one of the important covering nearly 6% of the population of China. The aim of this paper was to explore liver cancer mortality trends during past 30 years, and provide basic information on prevention strategies. Methods: Hebei was covered covered all the three national surveys during 1973-1975, 1990-1992, and 2004-2005 and one provincial survey during 1984-1986. Subjects included all cases dying from liver cancer in Hebei Province. Liver cancer mortality trend and geographic differences across cities and counties were analyzed. Results: There were 82,878 deaths in Hebei Province during 2004-2005 with an average mortality rate was 600.9/10,000, and an age-adjusted rate of 552.3/10,000. Those dying of cancer were 18,424 cases, accounting for 22.2% of all deaths, second only to cerebrovascular disease as a cause of death. Cancer mortality was 133.6/100,000 (age-adjusted rate was 119.2/100,000). Liver cancer ranked fourth in this survey with a mortality rate of 21.0/100,000, 28.4/100,000 in males and 13.35/10,000 in females, accounting for 15.7%, 17.1% and 13.4% of the total number of cancer deaths and in males and females, respectively. The sex ratio was 2.13. Since the 1970s, liver cancer deaths of Hebei province have been increasing slightly. The crude mortality rates in the four surveys were 11.3, 16.0, 17.4, 21.0 per 100,000, respectively, with age-adjusted rates fluctuating during the past 30 years, but the trend also being upwards. There is a tendency for the mortality rates to be higher in coastal than mountain areas, and is relative lower in the plain area, with crude mortality rates of 25.3, 22.1, and 19.1 per 100,000, respectively. There were no notable differences in cride data between urban and rural, but the age-adjusted mortality rate in rural was much higher. Conclusion: Our study indicated that the mortality of liver cancer in Hebei Province is lower than the national average level. There is a slightly increase trend, especially in some counties. Liver cancer is a major health problem and it is necessary to further promote prevention strategies in Hebei province.

Heat Stress Causes Aberrant DNA Methylation of H19 and Igf-2r in Mouse Blastocysts

        Jia-Qiao Zhu,Jing-He Liu,Xing-Wei Liang,Bao-Zeng Xu,Yi Hou,Xing-Xu Zhao,Qing-Yuan Sun 한국분자세포생물학회 2008 Molecules and cells Vol.25 No.2

To gain a better understanding of the methylation imprinting changes associated with heat stress in early development, we used bisulfite sequencing and bisulfite restriction analysis to examine the DNA methylation status of imprinted genes in early embryos (blastocysts). The paternal imprinted genes, H19 and Igf-2r, had lower methylation levels in heat-stressed embryos than in control embryos, whereas the maternal imprinted genes, Peg3 and Peg1, had similar methylation pattern in heat-stressed embryos and in control embryos. Our results indicate that heat stress may induce aberrant methylation imprinting, which results in developmental failure of mouse embryos, and that the effects of heat shock on methylation imprinting may be gene-specific.

      • Association Between the c.3751G>A Genetic Variant of MDR1 and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Risk in a Chinese Han Population

        Li, Xiao-Fei,He, Hua-Bin,Zhu, Yan-Shuang,He, Jin-Ke,Ye, Wei-Wei,Chen, Yong-Xin,Lou, Lian-Qing Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of a genetic variant in the multidrug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. This case-control study was conducted in a Chinese population of 645 HCC cases and 658 cancer-free controls. The genotype of the c.3751G>A genetic variant in the MDR1 gene was investigated by created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction (CRS-PCR) and DNA sequencing methods. Our data demonstrated significantly differences detected in the allelic and genotypic frequencies between HCC cases and those of cancer-free controls. Association analyses indicated that there were statistically increased risk of HCC in the homozygote comparison (AA versus (vs.) GG: OR=2.22, 95% CI 1.51-3.27, ${\chi}^2$=16.90, P<0.001), dominant model (AA/GA vs. GG: OR=1.25, 95% CI 1.00-1.55, ${\chi}^2$=3.98, P=0.046), recessive model (AA vs. GA/GG: OR=2.14, 95% CI 1.47-3.09, ${\chi}^2$=16.68, P<0.001) and allele comparison (A vs. G: OR=1.33, 95% CI 1.13-1.57, ${\chi}^2$=11.66, P=0.001). The allele-A and genotype-AA may contribute to HCC susceptibility. These preliminary findings suggest that the c.3751G>A genetic variant in the MDR1 gene is potentially related to HCC susceptibility in a Chinese Han population, and might be used as a molecular marker for evaluating HCC susceptibility.

Insecticidal activities and biochemical properties of Pinellia ternata extracts against the beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua

        Ya-Nan Zhang,Peng He,Jian-Ping Xue,Qing Guo,Xiu-Yun Zhu,Li-Ping Fang,Jin-Bu Li 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.2

The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a key pest of various agricultural crops in many countries throughout the world. The pest requires extensive use of pesticides and field-evolved resistances to conventional insecticides in China and other countries. Pinellia ternata Breit is native to the eastern part of Asia and foundmainly in China, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicines for N1000 years, but few studies have focused on the insecticidal activity of the P. ternate. In order to find natural products that could be used to control the pest in an safe, efficient and ecofriendlymanner,we first time analyzed the components of the anhydrous ethanolic extracts fromthe tubers of Pinellia ternate by using GC–MS method, and then investigated the insecticidal activities and biochemical mechanisms of the extracts against S. exigua. The result of GC–MS showed that 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenolmay be an insecticidal active component, and we also found the extracts had notable insecticidal activity and disturbed the regular metabolismof S. exiguamainly through altering the activities of detoxification enzymes, digestive enzymes and protective enzymes. These properties suggest that the anhydrous ethanolic extracts from P. ternate can serve as a potential, efficient and ecofriendly S. exigua-control biopesticide.
