        N-doped reduced graphene oxide aerogel for the selective adsorption of oil pollutants from water: Isotherm and kinetic study

        N-doped graphene aerogel with a 3D inter-connected network was synthesized using graphene oxide and pyrrole in an aqueous medium with ammonia. Hydrothermal and thermal annealing methods were employed to do it so. The structure and surface properties of the synthesized aerogel were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), XPS, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements. The prepared n-doped aerogel exhibited elevated specific surface area (340 m2/g), hydrophobic nature, and excellent adsorption capacity (210 g/g for crude oil removal). Adsorbent recyclability was also investigated; it is worth noting that after ten subsequent cycles, only just a negligible decrement in adsorption capacity was observed. Furthermore, the effect of salts and temperature on adsorption capacity was studied. Isotherm and kinetic studies were last examined. The conformity of various adsorption models, including Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) to the equilibrium data was evaluated among which Langmuir isotherm model gave the best fitting result. The sorption kinetics data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. As a consequence, oil spills adsorption using n-doped graphene aerogel is a relatively cost-effective method which can be scaled up, and it could be a promising material for removal of organic contaminants from water.

        The Effect of Evening Primrose Oil Capsule on Hot Flashes and Night Sweats in Postmenopausal Women: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

        Objectives: Menopause is associated with complications that could decline women’s health during this period. Therefore, some of its complications, such as hot flashes and night sweats, must be treated or alleviated. Methods: This randomized controlled trial included postmenopausal women who were referred to health centers in Hamadan from May 2018 to April 2019. The hot flash and night sweat questionnaires were completed by the researcher a week before and 8 weeks after the intervention. The intervention group took one capsule (1,000 mg) of evening primrose oil twice daily, while the control group received the same amount of placebo. Finally, the results were analyzed using Stata 13. Results: The mean scores of duration, frequency, and severity of hot flashes did not significantly decrease in both groups after the intervention compared with before the intervention, and no statistically significant difference was observed (P > 0.05). However, the intervention group had lower frequency and severity of night sweats after the intervention than the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Evening primrose oil effectively decreased the frequency and severity of night sweats.

        Weakly stochastic Runge-Kutta method with order 2

        Many deterministic systems are described by Ordinary differential equations and can often be improved by including stochastic effects, but numerical methods for solving stochastic differential equations(SDEs) are required, and work in this area is far less advanced than for deterministic differential equations. In this paper,first we follow [7] to describe Runge-Kutta methods with order 2 from Taylor approximations in the weak sense and present two well known Runge-Kutta methods, RK2-TO and RK2-PL. Then we obtain a new 3-stage explicit Runge-Kutta with order 2 in weak sense and compare the numerical results among these three methods.

        Effect of Combined Herbal Capsule Menohelp on Hot Flashes and Night Sweats in Postmenopausal Women: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

        Objectives: Hot flashes and night sweats are the most common and annoying consequences of menopause. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of a combined herbal capsule (black cohosh, soy, potato, chaste tree, and burdock) on hot flashes and night sweats in postmenopausal women. Methods: The present study was a randomized clinical trial conducted on postmenopausal women who were referred to Hamadan health centers in 2018–2019. The patients were distributed randomly in two groups of 85 individuals using the permuted block technique. The intervention group received the Menohelp capsule 550 mg twice daily for eight weeks and those in the control group received placebo. Data was obtained using a demographic questionnaire and a night sweat checklist one week before and eight weeks after the intervention. Data analysis was done using Stata 13. Results: Data analysis revealed that means of hot flashes duration, frequency and intensity did not significantly decrease in the postintervention phase as compared to the pre-intervention phase in both the groups (P > 0.05). Comparative analyses of frequency and intensity of night sweats in the two groups revealed that both variables decreased after intervention with the Menohelp capsule (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This study revealed that combined herbal medicine (Menohelp) was effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of night sweats. Therefore, it can be used to reduce night sweats in postmenopausal women.

        Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol for Evaluating the Effect of Group Education on Postmenopausal Sexual Dysfunction

        Objectives: This study primarily aimed to determine the effect of group education on sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women referred to health centers in Hamadan, Iran. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial conducted on 90 postmenopausal women from October 2018 to March 2019. Postmenopausal women who met the inclusion criteria and received approval of a psychiatrist were randomly divided into intervention and control groups (n = 45 in each group). They completed the demographic questionnaire and the Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire. Thereafter, four sessions of group training were conducted for women in the intervention group; these women were followed up for 1 month after the last training session. Data were analyzed using the SPSS ver. 16 software, and descriptive statistics and ANCOVA/ANOVA test were used for data analysis. Results: We found that the two groups were homogenous in most of the demographic variables and the data were normal. The total mean score of sexual function and standard deviation after the intervention was 23.70 ± 3.67 in the intervention group and 19.94 ± 3.64 in the control group, indicating that these scores were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Based on the results, group training is recommended to reduce sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women at health centers.

        Gingival crevicular fluid levels of sclerostin in chronic periodontitis and healthy subjects

        Objectives: Chronic periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of the oral cavity that causes destruction of periodontal tissues and bone around the teeth. Sclerostin is a protein encoded by the SOST gene. In this study, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of sclerostin in patients with chronic periodontitis were compared with those of healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 40 subjects were enrolled and divided into the healthy group (n=23) and chronic periodontitis group (n=17). GCF samples were collected, and the concentration of sclerostin was evaluated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Comparison of significance between groups was assessed using Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Sclerostin concentration was significantly higher in the chronic periodontitis group compared with the healthy group (P<0.005). Conclusion: Despite the limitations of this study, sclerostin can be a possible marker for assessment of periodontal health status.

        Original Articles : Causes of Visual Impairment among Patients Referred to a Visual Rehabilitation Clinic in Iran

        Purpose: Epidemiologic evaluation and investigating the causes of visual impairment in any society is a matter of concern and has a direct effect on the country`s health care planning. In this study we describe causes of low vision and blindness in Iranian patients referred to rehabilitation clinics for taking vision aids. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, visual acuity was classified based on best-corrected visual acuity in the better eye according to the World Health Organization definition (blindness, visual acuity [VA]<20/400; severe visual impairment, VA<20/200-20/400; mild to moderate visual impairment, VA<20/60-20/200). The causes of blindness and low vision were determined using the 10th version of International Classification of Diseases based on the main cause in both eyes. To describe data, we used mean±SD and frequency. Results: The study included 432 patients, 65% male, with a mean age of 43.6±25.5 years (range, 3 to 92 years). Mild to moderate visual impairment, severe visual impairment and blindness were present in 122 (28.8%), 196 (46.4%) and 105 (24.8%) of the patients, respectively. The main causes of visual impairment were retinal and choroidal diseases (74.5%), optic nerve and optic tract diseases (9.8%), vitreous and globe disorders (5.3%), congenital cataract (3.1%), and glaucoma (2.6%). The distribution pattern of the causes was similar in all age subgroups. Conclusions: Diseases of the retina and choroid are the main cause of visual impairment among patients referred to an academic visual rehabilitation clinic in Iran.

      • IL-1B (C+3954T) Gene Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Gastric Cancer in the Iranian Population

        Background: Gastric cancer as one of the most important diseases affecting health in all worldwide. Current studies have confirmed associations of cytokine gene polymorphisms with the risk of gastric cancer development. The current research aimed to assess the association of IL-1B+3954 genotypes with the risk of gastric cancer in the Iranian population. Materials and Methods: This case-control study covered 49 gastric cancer patients compared to 53 cancer free individuals as a control group. Genomic-DNA extraction was carried out from bioptic samples of patients and peripheral blood of healthy volunteers. Polymorphism of IL-1B +3954 genotypes were analysed with a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Results: The frequencies of IL-1B +3954 A1A1, A1A2 and A2A2 genotypes in healthy individuals were 26.4, 66 and 7.6 %, respectively. However, in gastric cancer patients, A1A1, A1A2 and A2A2 with 4.1, 51 and 44.9% were observed (p<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of our results show a positive association between the IL-1B+3954 genotype distribution and the risk of gastric cancer disease in the Iranian population.
