Silver particles are used in various consumer products due to their positive effects, which include sterilization and antibacterial properties. However, it has been reported that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have strongly acute toxic effects on various cells. Therefore, the cytotoxicity of AgNPs was investigated, using Escherichia coli as a model organism, from the standpoint of three key metrics (ionic ratio, size, and agglomeration) that are the most relevant physicochemical properties. The findings indicated that cytotoxicity is depressed by the agglomeration of AgNPs. The order of toxic sensitivity was as follows: total Ag concentration??> ?onic ratio??> ?ize, the order of which was inversely related to the extent of agglomeration.

Synthesis of mono-dispersed nano-scale fullerene (C60) crystals.
Bae, Eunjoo,Kwak, Byoung Kyu,Kim, Woo-Sik,Kim, Younghun,Choi, Kyunghee,Yil, Jongheop American Scientific Publishers 2011 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.11 No.4

Fullerene (C60), which has a unique molecular structure, was used in the preparation of crystalline organic nano-crystals. Fullerene was dissolved in toluene and this fullerene solution was mixed with water drastically. During this process, fullerene transferred from toluene to water phase. The significantly different solubility of fullerene in a toluene/water solvent system played an important role in the self-assembly of single fullerene nano-crystals, as it is called drowning-out crystallization. In addition, pH of water was controlled to carry out the interfacial transference of fullerene. An optical spectrum analysis showed that the fullerene was transferred by a hydrolysis reaction from toluene to water, depending on the pH and toluene involved in the crystal structure. During the interfacial transference, the growth of nano-scale fullerene occurred at pH > 7. Importantly, fullerene nanocrystals were formed with a mono-dispersed square structure on a nano-scale (104 nm average size and 1.03 +/- 0.24 aspect ratio) at pH 10.

Nanotechnology is emerging as one of the key technologies of the 21 st century and is expected to enable one to broaden the applicability across a wide range of sectors that can benefit public and improve industrial competitiveness. Already. consumer products containing nanomaterials are available in markets including coatings, computers, clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment and medical devices. Recently. Institute of Occupational Medicine in UK reported an occupational hygiene review for nanoparticles in the viewpoint of nanotoxicity. They reported that the exposure control is very important issues in workplace for exposure assessment. but no proper methods are available to measure the extent of exposures to nanoparticles in the workplace. Therefore, for the estimation of exposure of nanomaterials, we have to approach the material-balance methodology, which similarly carried out in TRI (toxic release inventory) for hazardous chemicals. In order to use this methodology, the exposure source of nanomaterials should be determined firstly. Therefore, herein we investigated the main sources and processes for the exposure to nanomaterals by conducting the survey. The results could be used to define and assess nanohazard sources.
Distilling entanglement with noisy operations
Chang, Jinho,Bae, Joonwoo,Kwon, Younghun World Scientific 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF QUANTUM INFORMATION Vol.15 No.3

Entanglement distillation is a fundamental task in quantum information processing. It not only extracts entanglement out of corrupted systems but also leads to protecting systems of interest against intervention with environment. In this work, we consider a realistic scenario of entanglement distillation where noisy quantum operations are applied. In particular, the two-way distillation protocol that tolerates the highest error rate is considered. We show that among all types of noise there are only four equivalence classes according to the distillability condition. Since the four classes are connected by local unitary transformations, our results can be used to improve entanglement distillability in practice when entanglement distillation is performed in a realistic setting.

The Unseen Threat: Microplastic Emissions from Face Masks and Limited Public Awareness
Park Yeonjung,Bae Heekyung,Park Ha-neul,Park Jeonggue,홍재환,Kim Younghun 한국화학공학회 2024 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.41 No.1
Masks are typically made of plastic materials, which can contribute to plastic pollution if not properly disposed. A survey should be conducted to assess the public awareness of microplastics (MP) emissions and mask disposal, which could inform targeted educational campaigns to promote sustainable practices. This study used an online survey to gather data from a sample of the general public aged 20 years or older who had used masks. The survey included questions on mask usage, disposal, and awareness of the presence of MP in masks. The survey found that, although awareness of the risks of MP was high, the respondents’ understanding of them was low, particularly among younger individuals. The survey also revealed that more than half of the respondents did not know whether their masks contained plastic materials and that there was a lack of awareness regarding the potential environmental and health impacts of improper mask disposal. These results revealed that it is crucial to raise public awareness of the environmental and health impacts of improper mask disposal and the presence of MP in masks.
