<P>A two-dimensional semi-analytical solution to analyse stream–aquifer interactions in a coastal aquifer where groundwater level responds to tidal effects is presented. The conceptual model considered is a two-dimensional subsurface system with stream and coastline boundaries at right angles. The dimensional and non-dimensional boundary value problems were solved for water level in the aquifer by successive application of Laplace and Fourier transform techniques, and the results were obtained by numerical inversion of the transformed solution. The solution was then verified by reducing the solutions to one-dimensional known problems and comparing the results with those from previous studies. Hypothetical examples were used to examine the characteristics of water-level variations due to the variations in stream stage and the fluctuations in tide level. Sensitivity analysis indicated that streambed leakance has no influence over the amplitude of groundwater fluctuations, but that the effect of stream stage increases with increasing leakance. Little difference was observed in the water level for different aquifer penetration ratios with narrow stream width. Increases in streambed leakance caused increases in the effect of aquifer penetration by the stream on the water level. An increased specific yield value resulted in decreased amplitude of water fluctuations and mean water level, and showed that water-level variations due to stream and tidal boundaries are sensitive to specific yield. <P>Glioma cells with stem cell properties, termed glioma stem-like cells (GSCs), have been linked to tumor formation, maintenance, and progression and are responsible for the failure of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Because conventional glioma treatments often fail to eliminate GSCs completely, residual surviving GSCs are able to repopulate the tumor. Compounds that target GSCs might be helpful in overcoming resistance to anticancer treatments in human brain tumors. In this study, we showed that 5-bromo-3-(3-hydroxyprop-1-ynyl)-2H-pyran-2-one (BHP), a new 2-pyrone derivative, suppressed the maintenance of the GSC population in both a glioma cell line and patient-derived glioma cells. Treatment of GSCs with BHP effectively inhibited sphere formation and suppressed the CD133(+) cell population. Treatment with BHP also suppressed expression of the stemness-regulating transcription factors Sox2, Notch2, and β-catenin in sphere-cultured glioma cells. Treatment of GSCs with BHP significantly suppressed two fundamental characteristics of cancer stem cells: self-renewal and tumorigenicity. BHP treatment dramatically inhibited clone-forming ability at the single-cell level and suppressed in vivo tumor formation. BHP markedly inhibited both phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt and Ras/Raf-1/extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling, which suggests that one or both of these pathways are involved in BHP-induced suppression of GSCs. In addition, treatment with BHP effectively sensitized GSCs to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Taken together, these results indicate that BHP targets GSCs and enhances their sensitivity to anticancer treatments and suggest that BHP treatment may be useful for treating brain tumors by eliminating GSCs.</P>

본 연구에서는 기보고된 탄소연대 측정결과 중 오류 가능성이 의심되는 데이터를 선별하고, 동일 시료에 대한 재측정실험을 행하였다. 우선, 연대측정결과의 비교검토를 통해 잘못 측정되었을 가능성이 높은 데이터를 선별하였다. 서울대와 다른 기관 사이의 연대 차이가 있다는 지적에 대해 재검토한 결과, 서울대가 일관되게 다른 기관보다 이른 연대치를 보이지는 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 서울대와 지질자원연구원의 측정결과 중, 특정 보고일자에 이상측정치들이 집중되는 패턴이 간취되었다. 이에 문제의 데이터가 측정상의 오류에서 기인하는지 검증하기 위해 세 단계에 걸쳐 재측정실험을 실시하였다. 재측정 결과, 서울대와 지질자원연구원의 특정 일자 보고치에서 반복적 오류가 발견되었다. 그렇지만 문제의 일자를 제외한 서울대 측정치에는 문제가 없음이 확인되었다. 금번 재측정실험에서 오류로 판정된 지자원과 서울대의 일부 데이터는 폐기되어야 하며, 이 결과가 편년 연구에도 반드시 반영되어야 할 것이다. 마지막으로, 방사성탄소연대자료에 대한 합리적인 연구는 연대측정결과에 대한 무조건적 불신이 아니라 데이터와 편년안에 대한 신중한 재점검을 통한 체계적인 활용이어야 함을 제언하였다. In this paper, we examine potential errors of already-reported radiocarbon dates of Korea, by re-dating the same samples. We compared multiple dates from the same features to asses the dataset and find problematic dates. Evaluation of the radiocarbon dataset revealed that among radiocarbon dates measured by SNU and KIGAM, anomalous dates were concentrated on specific dates. A series of re-dating experiments confirmed our suspicions, although the general accuracy of the SNU radiocarbon dates did not have problems. We suggest that the erroneous dates that we found from re-dating be abandoned.
