      • A Study on the Community of Waterbirds and Protective value at Gangjin Bay in Jeollanamdo, Korea

        This study was conducted in Gangjin Bay of Jeollanam-do over a total of 8 sessions, once each month, between October of 2009 and May of 2010. A total of 9,647 birds of 63 species were observed during the study period. The most dominant species was Aythya ferina (18.5%), followed by, in decreasing order, Anas platyrhynchos (11.5%), Calidris alpine (9.6%) and Cygnus Cygnus (7.7%). Species which appeared in all months (100% occurrence rate) included a total of 5 species of Ardea cinerea, Egretta alba modesta, Egretta garzetta, Anas crecca and Anas poecilorhyncha. Furthermore, the study showed a total of 13 government protected species, 3 class-I endangered species, 8 class-II endangered species and 8 natural monument species. The Gangjin Bay region includes the Nakdong estuary, natural monument number 179, and provides stopping grounds for the Cygnus Cygnus, at the next highest number of birds. Furthermore, the region is characterized by the wintering of Cygnus Cygnus at a bird count higher than that of the Jindo Cygnus Cygnus migration destination, natural monument number 101. Therefore, there is a need for the designation of natural monuments and protected wetlands, as well as continued maintenance, in the Gangjin Bay region.

        Determination of Betaine in Fructus Lycii Using Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography with Evaporative Light Scattering Detection

        A simple new method was developed for the determination of betaine in Fructus Lycii using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with evaporative light scattering detection (HILIC-ELSD). Good chromatographic separation and reasonable betaine retention was achieved on a Kinetex HILIC column ($2.1{\times}100mm$, $2.6{\mu}m$) packed with fused-core particle. The mobile phase consisted of (A) acetonitrile and (B) 10 mM ammonium formate (pH 3.0)/acetonitrile (90/10, v/v). It was used with gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.7 mL/min. The column temperature was set at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and the injection volume was $10{\mu}L$. The ELSD drift tube temperature was $50^{\circ}C$ and the nebulizing gas (nitrogen) pressure was 3.0 bar. Stachydrine, a zwitterionic compound, was used as an internal standard. Calibration curve over $10-250{\mu}g/mL$ showed good linearity ($R^2$ > 0.9992) and betaine in the 70% methanol extract of Fructus Lycii was well separated from other peaks. Intraand inter-day precision ranged from 1.1 to 3.0% and from 2.4 to 5.3%, respectively, while intra- and inter-day accuracy ranged from 100.0 to 107.0% and from 94.3 to 103.9%, respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was $10{\mu}g/mL$ and the recoveries were in the range of 98.2-102.7%. The developed HILIC-ELSD method was successfully applied to quantitatively determine the amount of betaine in fourteen Fructus Lycii samples from different locations, demonstrating that this method is simple, rapid, and suitable for the quality control of Fructus Lycii.

        MKP1 Regulates the Induction of MCP1 by Streptococcus pneumoniae Pneumolysin in Human Epithelial Cells

        Epithelial cells act as the first line of host defense against microbes by producing a range of different molecules for clearance. Chemokines facilitate the clearance of invaders through the recruitment of leukocytes. Thus, upregulation of chemokine expression represents an important innate host defense response against invading microbes such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. In this study, we report that the expression of Monocyte Chemotactic Protein 1 (MCP1) was highly induced in response to S. pneumoniae in vitro and in vivo. Among numerous virulence factors, pneumococcal pneumolysin was found to be the major factor responsible for this induction. Furthermore, MCP1 induction was mediated by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) whose activation was controlled by MAPK phosphatase 1 (MKP1). Therefore, this study reveals novel roles of pneumolysin in mediating MKP1 expression for the regulation of MCP1 expression in human epithelial cells.

        ERP System Performance in a Hospital

        Objective: To measure the performance of a hospital enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and suggest various system improvements. Methods: A survey based on a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and an exclusive interview was administered to 102 employees with a one-year experience of using an ERP system at one university hospital. In order to analyze the factors affecting the ERP system performance, multiple regression analysis and Chi-square test were conducted. Results: All three examined variables-system quality, information quality and integration of hospital information resources-affected the ERP system performance positively. However, the system quality variable had the lowest mean score indicating that the ERP system was difficult to understand for many users. User characteristics were not significantly associated with information quality satisfaction. Conclusion: On the basis of the study results, we recommended some suggestions to improve the ERP system performance. In order to reduce users' dissatisfaction with the new system, hospitals should publicize the needs of the ERP system for the employees, design more effective training programs, and provide more decision-supporting information for managers.         Varicella Zoster Virus–Associated Necrotizing Retinitis After Chickenpox in a 10-Year-Old Female: A Case Report

        <P>A necrotizing retinitis in children is a rare but vision-threatening ocular complication of chickenpox. We report a 10-year-old girl who developed chickenpox 1 month before presenting with panuveitis and necrotizing retinitis. After prompt antiviral treatment, her inflammatory signs were resolved. Early detection and treatment of varicella zoster-associated necrotizing retinitis after chickenpox can achieve good visual outcome.</P>

        Population Distribution and Growth Environment of Euphorbia jolkinii Boiss. in Jeju Island, Korea

        암대극(Euphorbia jolkinii Boiss.)은 우리나라 제주도 및 남부 해안가 암석지에서 자생하는 대극과(Euphorbiaceae)의 다년생 초본식물이다. 등잔모양꽃차례가 황록색으로 3월부터 5월까지 긴 기간 동안 개화하기 때문에 새로운 관상식물로 개발할 가치가 높다. 본 연구에서는 암대극을 재배화하고자 우선적으로 제주도의 자생지 환경과 개체군 분포 특성을 조사하였다. 제주도 전역의 해안을 따라서 암대극 개체의 전수조사를 실시한 결과 40여 지점에 걸쳐 약 14,817개체가 자생하는 것으로 확인되었다. 그 중 제주도 본섬의 동쪽에 위치한 우도에 1,075개체(전체의 7.3%), 북서쪽에 위치한 비양도에 952개체(6.4%), 남쪽에 위치한 가파도에 589개체(4.0%)가 조사되었다. 암대극은 주로 제주도 본섬 남동부 해안가 암석지대에 집중적으로 자생하는 것으로 확인되었고 가파도, 우도, 비양도의 경우에도 섬 동쪽지역에만 분포되어 있었다. 암대극의 생육은 자생지에 따라 차이가 있었다. 초장, 줄기 길이, 줄기 직경은 꽃 크기와 정의 상관관계를 보였다. 모든 지역에서 꽃이 피는 시기는 3월 말로 비슷하게 개화가 시작되었고, 6월 초에는 대부분의 꽃에서 종자가 성숙하여 탈리되었다. 암대극의 주변 식생은 갯개미자리, 돌가시나무, 순비기나무, 갯강활 등 30여 종이 분포되어 있었고, 초본이 80%를 차지하는 데에 반해, 목본은 20%로서 초본식물이 주를 이루었다. 토양의 pH는 8.3~9.4의 범위에 있었으며, 염분 농도는 0.003~0.017%로 나타났다. 유기물 함량은 중문에서 1.9%, 가파도에서 1.4%, 표선면에서 1.0%로 나타났고, CEC는 가파도에서 10.7cmol+/kg, 표선면에서 5.6cmol+/kg, 중문 지역에서 1.3cmol+/kg로 나타났다. 전기전도도는 중문, 가파도, 표선면에서 각각 0.47dS/m, 0.19dS/m, 0.16dS/m으로 나타났고, Cl-은 57.45mg/kg, 63.01mg/kg, 8.12mg/kg으로 나타났다. 중문에서 유효인산은 검출되지 않았다. Euphorbia jolkinii Boiss. is a perennial herb belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae and is native to Jeju island and the southern coastal area of Korea. It holds potential as a new ornamental plant, with yellow-green flowers and a long flowering period which ranges from March to May. The present study aimed to investigate the population distribution and growth environments in habitats that are native for the species. Identification of 14,817 plants was done at more than 40 sites along the coastal area of Jeju Island. Of these, 1,075 individuals (7.3%) were identified in eastern Udo, 952 individuals (6.4%) were found in north-west Biyangdo, and 589 individuals (4.0%) were identified in southern Gapado. E. jolkinii was found mainly occurring on rocky areas of the southeastern coast. Similarly, it was distributed only in the eastern part of the island i.e., in the areas of Gapado, Udo, and Biyangdo. The growth of E. jolkinii varied depending on its native area. Plant height, stem length, and stem caliper showed positive correlation with flower size. In each area, flowers bloomed in late March, and seeds were dispersed starting in early June. Approximately 30 plant species were distributed in the vegetation surrounding E. jolkinii habitats, including Spergularia marina (L.) Besser, Rosa wichuraiana Crep. ex Franch. & Sav., Vitex rotundifolia L.f., and Angelica japonica A. Gray. Herbaceous and woody plants accounted for 80% and 20%, respectively. Soil pH ranged from 8.3 to 9.4, and salinity values obtained ranged from 0.003 to 0.017%. Organic matter was determined to be present at 1.9% in Jungmun, 1.4% in Gapado, and 1.0% in Pyoseonmyeon, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) values were recorded as 10.7 cmol+/kg in Gapado, 5.6 cmol+/kg in Pyoseonmyeon, and 1.3 cmol+/kg in Jungmun, respectively. Electrical conductivity (EC) was determined to be 0.47 dS/m in Jungmun, 0.19 dS/m in Gapado, and 0.16 dS/m in Pyoseonmyeon, and Cl− was 57.45 mg/kg, 63.01 mg/kg, and 8.12 mg/kg, respectively. Available phosphate was not detected in the coastal areas of Jungmun.

        Preliminary evaluation of new <sup>68</sup>Ga-labeled cyclic RGD peptides by PET imaging

        Integrin ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$ plays an important role in the tumor metastases and angiogenesis. Arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide motif binds to the integrin ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$. General $^{68}Ga$-labeled cyclic RGD peptides was rapidly eliminated from the circulatory system by renal excretion because of its hydrophilic property. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel $^{68}Ga$-labeled cyclic RGD peptides, which could acquire enhanced PET tumor images with improved pharmacokinetics by adopting biphenyl group between chelator and RGD peptides. $^{68}Ga$-DOTA-2P-c(RGDyK) was demonstrated a 12% higher lipophilicity level than $^{68}Ga$-DOTA-c(RGDyK) as a reference compound. In the animal PET, $^{68}Ga$-DOTA-2P-c(RGDyK) represented relatively lower blood-clearance, and an increased signal to noise ratio compared to $^{68}Ga$-DOTA-c(RGDyK). From these perspective, $^{68}Ga$-DOTA-2P-c(RGDyK) could be a good candidate for in integrin ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$-expressed tumor imaging.

        Prevalence and associated factors of retinal vein occlusion in the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, 2008–2012 : A cross-sectional observational study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular diseases and there are only a few Asian population-based studies with small samples. Hypertension is one of a modifiable risk factor of RVO, but no recent studies have shown the relationship between RVO and hypertension control status. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of RVO and its associated factors in an adult Korean population.</P><P>A nationwide population-based, cross-sectional study. We enrolled 37,982 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who were 19 years or older and who had undergone ophthalmologic exams from 2008 through 2012. All participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, standardized ophthalmic and health interviews, and laboratory investigations. Digital fundus photographs were interpreted by retinal specialists who investigated for the presence of RVO. The prevalence of RVO was then estimated. RVO-associated factors were determined using step-wise logistic regression analyses. We also performed a subgroup analysis to evaluate the association between hypertension and RVO according to hypertension control status and antihypertensive medication use.</P><P>Of those enrolled participants, 25,765 participants met our study criteria and were included in the analyses. The overall RVO prevalence (n = 205) was 0.6 ± 0.1% (0.6 ± 0.1% for branch RVO and <0.1% for central RVO), and no sex differences were observed. In multivariate logistic regression analyses after adjusting for all potential risk factors, we found the following factors to be significantly associated with RVO: old age (odds ratio (OR) = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.27–2.34), hypertension (OR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.31–5.08), history of stroke (OR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.01–4.45), and hypercholesterolemia (OR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.01–3.35). In a subset of participants with hypertension, participants with uncontrolled hypertension (OR = 3.46, 95% CI: 1.72–6.94) and unmedicated hypertension (OR = 4.12, 95% CI: 2.01–8.46) were more significantly associated with RVO than participants without hypertension.</P><P>RVO prevalence in Korea was moderate relative to that in the rest of the world, and RVO-associated factors were similar to those identified in other population-based studies. Well-controlled hypertension and antihypertensive medication showed inverse association with RVO.</P>
