Assessments of in Vivo and in Vitro Tests for Atopic Diseases
Yi, Jong Yuk,Kim, Jin Wou,Kim, Hyung Ok,Kim, Chung Won CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1987 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.15 No.1
In order to evaluate the diagnostic value of Phadiatop^ test in atopic diseases, we compared the results of Phadiatop^ test with those of prick test, total serum IgE measurement, allergen specific IgE test in atopic dermatitis, atopic respiratory diseases, atopic respiratory diseases with atopic dermatitis and control. An allergen for prick and specific IgE test was house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. The results were as follows: 1. In atopic respiratory diseases with or without atopic dermatitis, both prick test and Phadiatop^ test showed higher sensitivities than other tests. 2. The sensitivities of all tests which we tried were relatively lower in atopic dermatitis than in other diseases. 3. The specificities of prick test, allergen specific IgE test and Phadiatop^ test were high, while that of total serum IgE measurement was relatively low (83.3%).

Open heart surgery patients exhibit greater prevalence of delirium and moderate or higher level of anxiety. These symptoms may hinder postoperative recovery and health, and may even lead to complications. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of preoperative video information on delirium, anxiety, and nursing satisfaction of open heart surgery patients. This quasiexperimental study utilized a nonequivalent control group with a non-synchronized design, and was conducted from March 15, 2012 to December 1, 2014. The subjects consisted of 50 patients, of whom 25 comprised the experimental group and 25 the control group. On the day prior to surgery, the experimental group was provided with informative videos while the control group was provided with information through traditional medium. Delirium was diagnosed through CAM-ICU, while anxiety levels and Nursing Satisfaction were determined through STAI and questionnaire, respectively. Data was analyzed through SPSS WIN 21.0. The results showed no statistically significant difference (p=.260) in delirium incidences, but improvements were observed in anxiety levels (p=.028) and nursing satisfaction (p=.004). Thus, this study recommends the use of video information as part of nursing intervention for open heart surgery patients so as to reduce their anxiety levels and improve nursing satisfaction.
The risk factors for herpes zoster in bortezomib treatment in patients with multiple myeloma
Yi, Yang-Seon,Chung, Joo-Seop,Song, Moo-Kon,Shin, Ho-Jin,Seol, Young-Mi,Choi, Young-Jin,Cho, Goon-Jae,Lee, Gyeong-Won,Moon, Joon-Ho,Hwang, In-Hye,Ahn, Kang-Hee,Lee, Hee-Sun,Shin, Kyung-Hwa,Hwang, Jong Korean Society of Hematology; Korean Society of Bl 2010 Blood Research Vol.45 No.3

Background

Bortezomib has significant activity in treating multiple myeloma (MM). The risk of herpes zoster (HZ) has been reported to increase significantly with bortezomib treatment, but the predisposing factors for HZ are not clear. This study is a retrospective analysis of the relevant risk factors for HZ in Korean MM patients treated with bortezomib.

Methods

Sixty-six patients with refractory or relapsed MM who underwent chemotherapy with bortezomib were included in the study. Prophylactic antiviral drugs were not used for treatment. The following parameters were reviewed: age, gender, stage and type of MM, extent of previous treatment, history of HZ, duration from the time of diagnosis to the time of bortezomib treatment initiation, and absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC) at the time of bortezomib treatment initiation.

Results

The incidence of HZ was 16.7%. There were no intergroup differences between the HZ-positive and the HZ-negative groups with regard to a history of HZ, number of previous treatments, and exposure to steroids before bortezomib treatment. The median duration from the time of MM diagnosis to the time of bortezomib treatment initiation in the HZ-positive group was significantly shorter than that in the HZ-negative group. The median ALC at the time of bortezomib initiation in the HZ-positive group was significantly lower than that in the HZ-negative group.

Conclusion

Bortezomib itself might act as a risk factor for HZ by inhibiting cell-mediated immunity, and patients with low ALC at the time of bortezomib treatment initiation were at greater risk of HZ during bortezomib treatment.

Bioinspired Morphogenesis of Highly Intricate and Symmetric Silica Nanostructures
Yi, Jaeseok,Jang, Hee Su,Lee, Jin Seok,Park, Won Il American Chemical Society 2012 NANO LETTERS Vol.12 No.7

Biosilification is of interest due to its capability to produce a highly intricate structure under environmentally friendly conditions. Despite the considerable effort that has been devoted toward biomimetic silification, the synthesis of highly complex silica structures, as found in the structures of diatom cell walls, is still in its infancy. Here, we report the bioinspired fabrication of well-organized and symmetric silica nanostructured networks, involving phase separation and silicic acid polymerization processes, in analogy to the morphogenesis of diatom cell walls. Our approach exploits self-assembled silica spheres as a self-source of the silicic acids as well as scaffolds that, interplayed with droplets of ammonium hexafluorosilicate, direct the site-specific silification. Moreover, we have achieved multiple morphological evolutions with subtle changes in the process, which demonstrates exquisite levels of control over silica morphogenesis.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Excellent outcome of medical treatment for Kasabach-Merritt syndrome: a single-center experience
Jin Ah Kim,Young Bae Choi,Eun Sang Yi,Ji Won Lee,Ki Woong Sung,Hong Hoe Koo,Keon Hee Yoo 대한혈액학회 2016 Blood Research Vol.51 No.4
BackgroundKasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a rare but life-threatening illness. The purpose of this study is to report our single-center experience with KMS.MethodsWe reviewed the medical records of 13 patients who were diagnosed with KMS between 1997 and 2012 at Samsung Medical Center. Treatment response was defined as follows: 1) hematologic complete response (HCR) – platelet count >130×109/L without trans-fusion; 2) clinical complete response (CCR) – complete tumor disappearance or small residual vascular tumor displaying lack of proliferation for at least 6 months after treatment discontinuation.ResultsParticipants included 7 male and 6 female patients. The median initial hemoglobin levels and platelet counts were 9.7 g/dL (range, 6.6‒11.6 g/dL) and 11×109/L (range, 3‒38×109/L), respectively. Twelve patients received corticosteroid and interferon-alpha as initial treatment, and the remaining patient received propranolol instead of corticosteroid. Two patients with unsatisfactory response to the initial treatment received weekly vincristine. Successful discontinuation of medication was possible at a median of 301 days (range, 137‒579) in all patients except one who was lost to follow-up. The median times to achieve HCR and CCR were 157 days and 332 days, respectively. The probabilities of achieving HCR and CCR were 77% and 54% at 1 year, and 88% and 86% at 2.5 years, respectively.ConclusionThe prognosis of KMS in our cohort was excellent. Our data suggest that individualized treatment adaptation according to response may be very important for the successful treatment of patients with KMS.
