Dose-Dependent Associations between Wine Drinking and Breast Cancer Risk - Meta-Analysis Findings
Chen, Jia-Yan,Zhu, Hong-Cheng,Guo, Qing,Shu, Zheng,Bao, Xu-Hui,Sun, Feng,Qin, Qin,Yang, Xi,Zhang, Chi,Cheng, Hong-Yan,Sun, Xin-Chen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3
Purpose: To investigate any potential association between wine and breast cancer risk. Materials and Methods: We quantitatively assessed associations by conducting a meta-analysis based on evidence from observational studies. In May 2014, we performed electronic searches in PubMed, EmBase and the Cochrane Library to identify studies examining the effect of wine drinking on breast cancer incidence. The relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) were used to measure any such association. Results: The analysis was further stratified by confounding factors that could influence the results. A total of twenty-six studies (eight case-control and eighteen cohort studies) involving 21,149 cases were included in our meta-analysis. Our study demonstrated that wine drinking was associated with breast cancer risk. A 36% increase in breast cancer risk was observed across overall studies based on the highest versus lowest model, with a combined RR of 1.0059 (95%CI 0.97-1.05) in dose-response analysis. However, 5 g/d ethanol from wine seemed to have protective value from our non-linear model. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that wine drinking is associated with breast cancer risk in a dose-dependent manner. High consumption of wine contributes to breast cancer risk with protection exerted by low doses. Further investigations are needed for clarification.

The attraction of Culex pipiens pallens Coquillett to various potential sugar sources in their habitats remains unknown. In the present study, we evaluated the attraction of Cx. pipiens pallens to the volatiles of different kinds of flowers, fruits, and seed pods by multiple choice tests under laboratory conditions. Nine of the 21 tested fresh tissues of flowers were attractive to females and six of them were attractive to males. The volatiles of six flowers (Ligustrum quihoui, Abelia chinensis, Ophiopogon japonicus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Osmanthus fragrans, and Nerium indicum) were attractive to both female and male Cx. pipiens pallens, and the flowers of Torenia fournieri and Lavandula angustifolia were potentially repellent to female and male mosquitoes, respectively. Besides, the volatiles of three fruits and seed pods (Broussonetia papyrifera, Amygdalus persica, and Cucumis melo) were attractive to both female and male Cx. pipiens pallens while the seed pods of Ficus carica and Pyrus bretschneideri were only attractive to females and males, respectively. This study provides valuable information on developing novel control methods against Cx. pipiens pallens in China.

Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of 1450 kg/m³ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. ULCC was adopted as the core material in the SCS sandwich composite beams to reduce the overall structural weight. Headed shear studs working in pairs with overlapped lengths were used to achieve composite action between the core material and steel face plates. Nine quasi-static tests on this type of SCS sandwich composite beams were carried out to evaluate their ultimate strength performances. Different parameters influencing the ultimate strength of the SCS sandwich composite beams were studied and discussed. Design equations were developed to predict the ultimate resistance of the cross section due to pure bending, pure shear and combined action between shear and moment. Effective stiffness of the sandwich composite beam section is also derived to predict the elastic deflection under service load. Finally, the design equations were validated by the test results.

Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of 1,450 kg/㎥ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. This paper investigates the structural performances of SCS sandwich composite beams with ULCC as filled material. Overlapped headed shear studs were used to provide shear and tensile bond between the face plate and the lightweight core. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) model was developed for the ultimate strength analysis of such SCS sandwich composite beams. The accuracy of the FE analysis was established by comparing the predicted results with the quasi-static tests on the SCS sandwich beams. The FE model was also applied to the nonlinear analysis on curved SCS sandwich beam and shells and the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and different concrete core including ULCC, lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). Validations were also carried out to check the accuracy of the FE analysis on the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and curved SCS sandwich structure. Finally, recommended FE analysis procedures were given.
Polymorphisms of TERT and CLPTM1L and the Risk of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Chinese Males
Su, Ling-Yan,Li, Xue-Lian,Shen, Li,Zhang, Yue,Zhao, Meng-Meng,Yin, Zhi-Hua,Su, Hong-Ying,Zhou, Bao-Sen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.19
Background: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and cleft lip and palate trans-membrane 1 like (CLPTM1L) genes located on chromosome 5p15.33 are known to influence the susceptibility to various cancers. Here, we examined the association of TERT and CLPTM1L single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: Genotyping of TERT SNP rs2736098 and CLPTM1L SNP rs401681 was performed using TaqMan allelic discrimination assays in a case-control study of 201 HCC cases and 210 controls in a Chinese male population. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using logistic regression analyses. Results: Both the rs2736098 T allele of TERT and the rs401681 T allele of CLPTM1L were associated with a significantly increased risk of HCC (adjusted odds ratio [OR]=1.605, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.164-2.213; adjusted OR=1.399, 95%CI=1.002-1.955, respectively). Individuals carrying both TERT and CLPTM1L risk genotypes had an even higher risk of HCC (adjusted OR=4.420, 95%CI= 2.319-8.425). The TERT rs2736098 T allele was also significantly associated with the level of the HCC clinical indicator alpha-fetoprotein (P=0.026). Conclusions: Our results show that genetic variants of TERT and CLPTM1L may contribute to HCC susceptibility in Chinese males.

To explore the relationship of the MOV10, A3G, and IFN-αmRNA levels with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection,Blood samples from 96 patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB) and 21 healthy individuals as control were collected. HBV DNA load and aminotransferase in the serum weretested using real time PCR and velocity methods, respectively. The MOV10, A3G, and IFN-α mRNA levels in theperipheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were examinedthrough qRT-PCR. The MOV10, A3G, and IFN-α mRNAlevels in CHB group was significantly lower than those inthe control group (P<0.01, P<0.05, P<0.01, respectively). TheA3G mRNA level in the high-HBV DNA load group waslower than that in the low-HBV DNA load group (P<0.05). However, no statistical difference was found in the MOV10and IFN-α mRNA levels between the two HBV DNA loadgroups. Furthermore, the MOV10 mRNA level showed positivecorrelation with IFN-α in the control group. These resultsindicated that the expression of the innate immune factorsMOV10, A3G, and IFN-α is affected by chronic HBV infection.
