Dr. Byung Wook Ahn. 2003. Leader's Favourite Maxim. Collected Papers on Christian Language Culture. In this paper, the writer argues that there are three kinds of important choices in our life. They are a vocational choice, a mate's choice, and the choice of our view of life. The choices influence our success or failure, and our happiness or unhappiness. Our favourite maxim can be said to be the guiding principle in our life, a code of conduct, and the mirror of daily life. They are for our character building as a favourite maxim, which is not only a short expression of a general truth but also a briefly-expressed rule to guide people. The favourite maxim asks us leaders to answer the questions as follows : "Who is the wisest man in the world?", "Who is the strongest man in the world?", and Who is the richest man in the world?" As leaders, we must learn, for living is learning. First of all, we must learn to adapt ourselves to our circumstances in the age of lifelong education. And the wisest man is the man of learning. As leaders, we must fight to overcome ourselves. For living is fighting. We must fight as long as we live. We must fight a good fight. We must devote our lifetime to fighting the good fight. And the strongest man in the world is the man who overcomes himself. As leaders, we must be self-sufficient. We must know our station in life, keep to our sphere in life, and live within our means. And the richest man in the world is a self-sufficient man. In conclusion, as leaders, we must feel a call to the occupation or the profession. For our vocation or calling can be named our Backbone. And it can be called the achievement of social role playing. In order to strive for national wealth and power, as leaders, we must dedicate ourselves to our own affair with a divine calling, not a mere means for making a living.

사람의 혈관 내피세포에 대한 Rickettsia typhi의 감염

R. typhi, the etiologic agent of murine typhus, has known to cause fever, headache, maculopapular rash and vasculitis of small blood vessel. The skin rash and vasculitis are thought to be the results of endothelial cell injury from the infection with R. typhi in vivo. R. typhi showed ability to cause cellular injury of cultured human endothelial cells. The endothelial cells used in this experiment wee obtained by collagenase treatment of human umbilical cord veins. These cells were conformed to be endothelial cell by the presence of von Willebrand factor through the immunofluorescent antibody technique and Weibel-Palade bodies under the electron microscopy. Ultrastructural study revealed that there were no evidences of entry and/or escape from endothelial cells of R. typhi in 24 hours through 48 hours after infection. On the contrary, numerous particles implicating R. typhi were observed in large vacuole within endothelial cells at 48 hours after inoculations. Estimating the severe injury of endothelial cells by infection of R. typhi, the endothelial cells seems to be the primary target cells in human disease caused by R. typhi infection.

자외선 B 조사로 유도되는 염증 반응과 지질과산화에 대한 Egb 761의 억제 효과

Reactive oxygen species are involved in inflammatory reaction & lipid peroxidation of skin induced by ultraviolet radiation. The aim of this study was to investigate a protective effect of topical EGb 761 on ultraviolet B induced inflammation and lipid peroxidation in ICR mice. Lipid peroxidation in skin was assessed by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) levels, while skin-fold thickness was used as the measure of UVB-induced inflammation. EGb 761 was topically applied to the skin for 7 days before a single dose of 2KJ/㎡ UVB irradiation. In irradiated skin, maximal skin swelling occurred at 24h, lipid peroxides were increased at 3h after irradiation. Topical application of 1% EGb 761 reduced edema response and lipid peroxide levels. In conclusion, we suggest that topical application of EGb 761 before UVB irradiation acts as a photoprotective agent.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax has an annual incidence of 9 cases per 100,000 populations, especially high incidence in young adults. Thoracoscopic surgery is not new, but its applications to chest surgery have been more increasing with advanced video technology and instrumentation. We performed 15 cases of bullectomy using video-assisted thoracoscopy(VATS) for patients of pneumothorax. The mean age of patients was 25.1±7.6 years old, 105.5±40.1 minutes of mean operation times, and 3.2±1.9 days of postoperative tube indwelling time. Postoperative complications were persistent air leakage in one case, which was converted to open thoracotomy later, and recurrence of pneumothotax in one case. Video-assisted thoracoscopic bullectomy is effective alternative to thoracotomy for treatment of pneumothorax in terms of short hospital stay, less morbidity, low rate of recurrence, less pain, and good cosmetic results. But objective comparison with mini-thoracotomy will be needed in many aspects.

Purpose: Netarsudil is a Rho kinase inhibitor and the first new class of clinically useful ocular hypotensive agents. In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to summarize and synthesize the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of fixed-dose combination (FDC) therapy with netarsudil/latanoprost in patients with glaucoma. Methods: We identified relevant studies in PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central until April 2021. The quality of the studies and the level of evidence were assessed using the Risk of Bias tool. Efficacy was measured as the mean difference in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP), and safety was assessed by the risk of conjunctival hyperemia (CH) due to FDC therapy, netarsudil monotherapy, or latanoprost monotherapy. Results: Four studies met the predefined eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The mean difference in the reduction in IOP after 2 weeks and 4 to 6 weeks of drug administration was -2.41 mmHg (95% confidence interval [CI], -2.95 to -1.87) and -1.77 mmHg (95% CI, -2.31 to -1.87), respectively, in patients receiving FDC therapy versus those receiving latanoprost monotherapy. On the other hand, latanoprost monotherapy had a greater effect in reducing IOP than netarsudil monotherapy after 4 to 6 weeks of administration (mean difference, 0.95 mmHg; 95% CI, 0.43 to 1.47). The risk of CH was significantly higher with both FDC therapy and netarsudil monotherapy compared to latanoprost monotherapy in week 12, where the relative ratio was 3.01 (95% CI, 1.95 to 4.66) and 2.33 (95% CI, 1.54 to 3.54), each. Conclusions: Netarsudil/latanoprost FDC therapy has a significantly greater effect on reducing IOP than latanoprost alone. The symptoms of CH were mostly mild, and only a few glaucoma patients discontinued the medication owing to CH in earlier clinical trials. Therefore, it would be beneficial to consider the administration of netarsudil/latanoprost FDC therapy in patients with glaucoma.

Purpose: This study aimed to understand the characteristics of sexual behaviors among Korean adults to facilitate the development of strategies and policies focused on sexual health in groups categorized by sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and Methods: A nationally representative probability sample of 2,500 individuals (1,273 men and 1,227 women) aged 18–69 years obtained using a stratified multiple-stage sampling method based on Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) participated in a cross-sectional online survey. The survey consisted of structured questionnaires comprising questions on demographic information, lifetime sexual behavior, and sexual behavior in the previous 12 months. Results: The mean age at first sexual intercourse was lower in men than in women (21.9±4.4 vs. 24.1±4.4 years, p=0.001). The overall prevalence rate of sexual events with casual partners within previous 12 months was 13.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 11.6%–14.5%). It was found to more commonly exist among lower age groups and men. The overall regular condom use rates with relationship partner and casual partner were 14.8% (95% CI, 13.2%–16.4%) and 39.6% (95% CI, 33.9%–45.3%), respectively. Condom use rate with casual partners among 20s and 30s men was 51.2%. Overall, only 10.4% of the respondents had received sexual education about sexually transmitted infections. Conclusions: This study provided contemporary sexual behaviors in Korean adults, and identified socio-demographic factors that seem to influence sexual behaviors. Low condom use rates and low rate of receiving sexual education were concerns. The result of this study would be useful to health professionals to formulate policies and strategies related to sexual health.

Improving Proximity and Diversity in Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithms

<P>This paper presents an approach for improving proximity and diversity in multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). The idea is to discover new nondominated solutions in the promising area of search space. It can be achieved by applying mutation only to the most converged and the least crowded individuals. In other words, the proximity and diversity can be improved because new nondominated solutions are found in the vicinity of the individuals highly converged and less crowded. Empirical results on multiobjective knapsack problems (MKPs) demonstrate that the proposed approach discovers a set of nondominated solutions much closer to the global Pareto front while maintaining a better distribution of the solutions.</P>
