      • 가톨릭 교회가 침묵해온 남녀 불평등 : A Feminist's Analytical Attempt

남인숙 대구효성가톨릭대학교 사회과학연구소 1998 女性問題硏究 Vol.23 No.-

This study premises that women's studies is the best approach to analyze the Catholic church and women, especially the women's liberation movement. Theology and philosophy may not be as adequate as women's studies, since in the Catholic tradition, they have been mostly monopolized by men such as priests and friars who left no room for a study of woman's role from a feminist perspective. On occasion, Catholic activists in women's rights movement and nuns in Korea did advise their church athorities that women no longer wish to remain at the low echelons of the church and bright women would leave the church unless given responsibilities in making policy-inputs. But there was no sympathetic audience there. Hence a feministic study of the Korean Catholic church has been next to impossible as it was viewed to threaten not only the rank order of the patriarchal church but also the Confucius social order of Korea Therefore, this study dare to make a friendly but critical analysis of the Catholic church from a "Womanologist" viewpoint. Perspectives of American and European women's liberation activists are often cited in this article. They tend to view the church as sustaining a dualistic religion idealizing a women like Mary while at the same time despising women in general. Policy implications of this study might stem from understanding why a number of Catholic women remain confused about the church's view on women, lean toward radical feminist movement or even changes to Protestantism to be ordained as a women minister or priest which is unthinkable in the Catholic church. The Euro-American Catholic churches may have to reform in order to reverse these trends and the Korean churches had better take lessons from them. A good many Catholics take a pride in the fact that Mary, the highest among those created by God was a women. When the angel announced the impending pregnancy to the Virgin Mary, she accepted it without consulting any males including her fiance, Joseph. This shows Mary's independent mindedness except to God. The heretofore prevailing view that Mary was an obedient and passive person was a myth produced by men and the male-dominated church. As this study demonstrates, Mary was a feminist for being a very non-male dependant, active and self-oriented women. A correct and authentic understanding of Mary by the Catholic church could also contribute toward equalization of sexes in and outside the churches.

      • 대학이념의 변천

        최선영 대구효성가톨릭대학교 1996 연구논문집 Vol.53 No.1

In this study we wnat to make a survey of the changes that the idea of university has undergone from ancient Greece to the 20 century. We will examine the concept of university against socio-cultural background of ancient Greece, medieval age, Renaissance era, and the subsequent period preparing for modern times, and our own days. Philosophy and rhetoric to the Greek youth was their equivalent to modern higher education, and Plato's Academy can be said to be the begining of its institutionalization. The aim of education for Plato was acquirement of wisdom through reason and ultimate liveration of mind. This contrasts with Isocrates' rhetoric and oratory as instrument to attain the position of social leadership. Thus began the perennial controversy between the idea of knowledge for the knowledge's sake and practical purpose of education. The idea of university in the early medieval age was a rigorous moral discipline based on Christianity, and developed to emphasize free inquiring mind within the tradition of scholastic philosophy. The idea of university in the Renaissance period consisted of the revival of Greek and Roman Classics and the humanistic education based on them. Through the seven liberal arts it promoted understanding of human being and freedom. Which made up the stuff of "an educated(cultured) gentleman." During the subsequent period sown to the 19 century preparing for modern times. The rise of free spirit with Renaissance gave birth to new science, the realism of the 17 century and the rationalism of the 18 century. The idea of university was now dedicated to the exploration of intellect and rational thinking, and prepared for specialization of learning. The 19 century saw emergence of nationalism throughout Europe and America. Universities all over the western world came to put on a strong nationalistic flavor with which they took the task of exploring national language, history, and culture of respective countries upon themselves. On the other hand it was Humboldt who represented the the idea of ivory tower for university, which is another dominent ideal in the 19 century in which the pursuit of truth was put on the pedestal. In the 20 century we see two different modes of University in Europe and America. European universities relegated humanistic, general education to the last years of high school, and initiated rigorous specialization and professionalism. In American universities on the other hand undergraduate curriculum features general education prodominently. Specialization in American education has its provenance in the university's close relationships and coordination with the larger society which marks the way of American society.
