Screening of Industrial Enzymes for Deproteinization of Shrimp Head for Chitin Recovery
Angel U. Valdez-Peña,Adriana Hernandez-Rivera,Iliana M. De-la-Garza-Rodriguez,Judith D. Espinoza-Perez,Georgina C. Sandoval-Fabian,Nagamani Balagurusamy,Juan Carlos Contreras-Esquivel 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.2
Food grade proteolytic enzymes were examined for deproteinization of shrimp head. Shrimp head was easily deproteinized by Alcalase® and trypsin at a pH of 8.0. Alcalase was chosen as the most efficient commercial enzyme for deproteinization of shrimp head. Alcalase treatment of shrimp head recorded 61% of weight loss on dry basis and a residual protein of 275 mg/g dried shrimp head. The enzymatically deproteinized shrimp head was later demineralized with lactic acid using microwave radiation at 400W. The combination of enzymatic and physicochemical treatments promoted the chitin recovery from dried shrimp head under eco-friendly conditions.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to describe the evolution of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a cohort of breast cancer patients over 1 year after surgery and to analyse the predictive ability of HRQOL measurement instruments. Methods: Observational, multicenter and prospective study of a cohort of breast cancer patients, assessing HRQOL at 1, 6, and 12 months after surgery using three questionnaires: EuroQol-5D-3L, EORTC QLQ-C30, and EORTC QLQ-BR23. Results: A total of 364 women participated in the study. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores from the EuroQol improved (1 month vs. 1 year: 70 vs. 80; p<0.0001); however, the EuroQol score showed no significant change (0.81 vs. 0.83; p=0.1323). In contrast, Global Health Status on the EORTC QLQ-C30 improved (66.67 vs. 100.00; p<0.0001), as did all of this instrument´s scales and most of its independent items. The EORTC QLQ-BR23 dimensions showed improvement, except for sexual functioning (100.00 vs. 86.67; p=0.0030) and future perspective (33.33 vs. 66.67; p<0.0001). Patients with good HRQOL outcomes at 1 month showed improved levels of HRQOL at 1 year; HRQOL measured at 1 month was predictive of HRQOL at 1 year. Conclusion: HRQOL improved during the follow-up period. Likewise, HRQOL measurement instruments can predict early HRQOL.
A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE MINIMIZATION OF SWITCHING FUNCTIONS
Michael E. Valdez 湖西大學校工業技術硏究所 1995 工業技術硏究所論文集 Vol.14 No.-
This paper is concerned with the minimization process of a single switching function. An algorithm, proposed in this paper, is called the Simple Table Method because all procedures are done on a single table. It is well suited to minimization of a switching function of any number of variables. For the construction of the Simple Table, a theorem is derived for getting the combinable pairings among minterms by means of decimal numbers. Then a table, called Directions of Adjacency (or DA) table, is constructed with all combinable pairs. This DA table is the fundamental part of the Simple Table. A method which generates all the prime implicants (PI's) quickly using the properties of DA table will be described. And a tree concept of Required Adjacency Directions (RAD), derived from the DA table, is also used in the minterm expansion.' A fast minimization algorithm will be shown in this paper that can be implemented with reduced computational effort by using the concept of the integration of the PI identification and selection procedure such as the selection of essential prime implicants(EPI's) in each step of the PI identification procedure.
Antiproliferative Effect from the Mexican Poleo (Hedeoma drummondii)

Hedeoma drummondii (poleo) has been used by Mexicans to prepare a tea for its pleasant taste. The methanolic extract, polar fractions, and major antioxidant compounds of the Mexican herbal tea obtained from aerial parts of H. drummondii (“poleo”) showed antiproliferative effects against the cancer cell lines MCF-7 (human breast) and HeLa (human cervix). Phenolic acids isolated from poleo have significant antiproliferative effects with caffeic acid the most potent. This evidence suggests that herbal poleo tea may have chemopreventive properties.

Cellulose has experienced a renaissance as a precursor for carbon fibers (CFs). However, cellulose possesses intrinsic challenges as precursor substrate such as typically low carbon yield. This study examines the interplay of strategies to increase the carbonization yield of (ligno-) cellulosic fibers manufactured via a coagulation process. Using Design of Experiments, this article assesses the individual and combined effects of diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP), lignin, and CO2 activation on the carbonization yield and properties of cellulose-based carbon fibers. Synergistic effects are identified using the response surface methodology. This paper evidences that DAP and lignin could affect cellulose pyrolysis positively in terms of carbonization yield. Nevertheless, DAP and lignin do not have an additive effect on increasing the yield. In fact, combined DAP and lignin can affect negatively the carbonization yield within a certain composition range. Further, the thermogravimetric CO2 adsorption of the respective CFs was measured, showing relatively high values (ca. 2 mmol/g) at unsaturated pressure conditions. The CFs were microporous materials with potential applications in gas separation membranes and CO2 storage systems.
