        Development of label-free electrochemical lactose biosensor based on graphene/poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene) film

        In this work, a lactose biosensor was developed by co-immobilizing b-galactosidase (b-Gal) and glucose oxidase (GOx) on microelectrodes pre-modified with Pt/graphene/P(1,5-DAN) for estimation of lactose in dairy products to prevent lactose intolerance. The Pt microelectrode was modified with graphene and 1,5-polydiaminonaphthalene film. Graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper tape and manually transferred to the electrode surface. Polymeric P(1,5-DAN) was grafted on top of the graphene film by electropolymerization. Modified surface of the electrode was characterized by Raman spectra analysis, FE-SEM, AFM and cyclic voltammetry. The results indicated that deposition graphene film on electrode surface induced considerable enhancement in current signal, over 20 times as high as the uncoated electrode surface. The developed sensor was successfully used to determine lactose in model samples with sensitivity, correlation coefficient (R2) and limit of detection (LOD) estimated to be 1.33 mA/(mgml1), 0.995 and 1.3 mg/ml, respectively. The combined graphene and conductive P(1,5-DAN) could serve as a novel sensing platform on electrochemical sensors with superior sensitivity.

        Real-time Human Detection under Omni-directional Camera based on CNN with Unified Detection and AGMM for Visual Surveillance

        In this paper, we propose a new real-time human detection under omni-directional cameras for visual surveillance purpose, based on CNN with unified detection and AGMM. Compared to CNN-based state-of-the-art object detection methods. YOLO model-based object detection method boasts of very fast object detection, but with less accuracy. The proposed method adapts the unified detecting CNN of YOLO model so as to be intensified by the additional foreground contextual information obtained from pre-stage AGMM. Increased computational time incurred by additional AGMM processing is compensated by speed-up gain obtained from utilizing 2-D input data consisting of grey-level image data and foreground context information instead of 3-D color input data. Through various experiments, it is shown that the proposed method performs better with respect to accuracy and more robust to environment changes than YOLO model-based human detection method, but with the similar processing speeds to that of YOLO model-based one. Thus, it can be successfully employed for embedded surveillance application.

        Synthesis and High Photocatalytic Activity of Zn-doped TiO<sub>2</sub> Nanoparticles by Sol-gel and Ammonia-Evaporation Method

        Photocatalysis has been applied to decompose the waste and toxic materials produced in daily life and in the global environment. Pure $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-0) and Zn-doped $TiO_2$ (Zn-$TiO_2$-x, x = 3-10 mol %) samples were synthesized using a novel sol-gel and ammonia-evaporation method. The Zn-doped $TiO_2$ samples showed high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The physicochemical properties of the samples were investigated using XRD, SEM, ICP, DLS and BET methods. In addition, the most important measurement of photocatalytic ability was investigated by a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The effects of the mol % of zinc ion doping in $TiO_2$ on photocatalytic activity were studied. Among the mol % Zn ions investigated, the Zn-$TiO_2$-9 sample showed the highest photoreactivity. This sample removed 91.4% of the MB after 4 h, while the pure $TiO_2$ only removed 46.4% of the MB.

        Effects of hydrophobicity and lubricant characteristics on anti-icing performance of slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Anti-icing properties were investigated in terms of adhesion force on slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces with several lubricants. Initial wetting state of substrate and lubricant characteristics were verified in anti-icing performance. Superhydrophobicity of porous substrate under lubricant intervening layer was effective to reduce adhesion force in anti-icing. The relationships between adhesion force and lubricant characteristics including viscosity, density, and surface tension were analyzed but no correlation was found. Interfacial surface tension exhibited a relatively negative correlation with adhesion strength.         SMOOTHING APPROXIMATION TO l<sub>1</sub> EXACT PENALTY FUNCTION FOR CONSTRAINED OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS

        In this paper, a new smoothing approximation to the l<sub>1</sub> exact penalty function for constrained optimization problems (COP) is presented. It is shown that an optimal solution to the smoothing penalty optimization problem is an approximate optimal solution to the original optimization problem. Based on the smoothing penalty function, an algorithm is presented to solve COP, with its convergence under some conditions proved. Numerical examples illustrate that this algorithm is efficient in solving COP.

        A Spiritual War: Religious Responses to Marketization in Rural North Vietnam

        This article explores religious responses to significant cultural and social change in a northern Vietnamese delta village from 1996 to 2008—the second decade after de-collectivization. Drawing upon extensive fieldwork in both the village and surrounding religious networks, the article teases out the meanings of the new religious movements for northern rural people in the new era of market economy; the symbols, language, and metaphoric resources people used in response to their uncertainty and mistrust of the new social landscape; and the unintended consequences of rapid societal development such as marginalization, tensions, and social disintegration. The article argues that as in milleniarism elsewhere, new religious movements in northern rural Vietnam embody unorthodox syncretism between world religious and local traditions, thus linking past, present, and future. However, when drawing upon a common reservoir of memories and experiences to cope with risks and challenges of the new market world, local people not only drew on the power and imperial metaphor of deities in their traditional religion and belief, but became more creative to recuperate meanings, standards, and symbols from revolutionary discourse to reorient themselves, and overcome alienation and marginalization.

        A Real-time Pedestrian Detection based on AGMM and HOG for Embedded Surveillance

        Pedestrian detection (PD) is an essential task in various applications and sliding window-based methods utilizing HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) or HOG-like descriptors have been shown to be very effective for accurate PD. However, due to exhaustive search across images, PD methods based on sliding window usually require heavy computational time. In this paper, we propose a real-time PD method for embedded visual surveillance with fixed backgrounds. The proposed PD method employs HOG descriptors as many PD methods does, but utilizes selective search so that it can save processing time significantly. The proposed selective search is guided by restricting searching to candidate regions extracted from Adaptive Gaussian Mixture Model (AGMM)-based background subtraction technique. Moreover, approximate computation of HOG descriptor and implementation in fixed-point arithmetic mode contributes to reduction of processing time further. Possible accuracy degradation due to approximate computation is compensated by applying an appropriate one among three offline trained SVM classifiers according to sizes of candidate regions. The experimental results show that the proposed PD method significantly improves processing speed without noticeable accuracy degradation compared to the original HOG-based PD and HOG with cascade SVM so that it is a suitable real-time PD implementation for embedded surveillance systems.

        Mental health and its determinants among adolescents living in families with separated or divorced parents in an urban area of Vietnam

        Objectives: We assessed the prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression among adolescents living in families with separated or divorced parents in Hue City, Vietnam and identified factors associated with these conditions.Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 309 adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years, living in families with separated or divorced parents in Hue City, Vietnam. The depression anxiety stress scale-21 (DASS-21) was used to measure stress, anxiety, and depression. Predictors of overall and individual mental health problems were identified using ordered and binary logistic regression, respectively.Results: The DASS-21 scale revealed a 49.2% prevalence of stress, while anxiety and depression had s prevalence rates of 61.5%. Among participants, 42.4% experienced all 3 mental health issues. Several factors were identified as significant predictors of mental health problems, including poor to average economic status (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21–3.31; p=0.007); being in high school (aOR, 5.02; 95% CI, 2.93–8.60; p<0.001); maternal occupation of teacher, healthcare professional, or official (aOR, 2.39; 95% CI, 1.13–5.03; p=0.022); longer duration of family separation or divorce (aOR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.05–1.45; p=0.009); living with one’s mother (aOR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.03–2.76; p=0.04); alcohol consumption (aOR, 1.70; 95% CI, 0.99–2.92; p=0.050); and being bullied (aOR, 5.33; 95% CI, 1.10–25.69; p=0.037). Most of these factors were associated with stress, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, smoking was associated with stress.Conclusion: Adolescents with separated or divorced parents were at increased risk of stress, anxiety, and depression. The findings of this study provide important implications for prevention programs.
