OVERVIEW OF RECENT EFFORTS THROUGH ROSA/LSTF EXPERIMENTS
Nakamura, Hideo,Watanabe, Tadashi,Takeda, Takeshi,Maruyama, Yu,Suzuki, Mitsuhiro Korean Nuclear Society 2009 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.41 No.6
JAEA started the LSTF experiments in 1985 for the fourth stage of the ROSA Program (ROSA-IV) for the LWR thermal-hydraulic safety research to identify and investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena and to confirm the effectiveness of ECCS during small-break LOCAs and operational transients. The LSTF experiments are underway for the ROSA-V Program and the OECD/NEA ROSA Project that intends to resolve issues in thermal-hydraulic analyses relevant to LWR safety. Six types of the LSTF experiments have been done for both the system integral and separate-effect experiments among international members from 14 countries. Results of four experiments for the ROSA Project are briefly presented with analysis by a best-estimate (BE) code and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to illustrate the capability of the LSTF and codes to simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that may appear during SBLOCAs and transients. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena dealt with are coolant mixing and temperature stratification, water hammer up to high system pressure, natural circulation under high core power condition, and non-condensable gas effect during asymmetric SG depressurization as an AM action.

Chlorophyll (ChI) a' is the Cl3$^2$-epimer of ChI a which is the constituent of P700, the primary electron donor of Photosystem (PS) I, of a thrmophilic cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus, whose structure was recently determined by X-ray crystallography. To determine whether PS I of diverse oxygenic photosynthetic organisms universally contain one molecule of ChI a ’, pigment compositions of thylakoid membranes and PS I complexes isolated from cyanobacteria, green algae, red algae and higher plants were determined by reversed-phase HPLC. The results show that involvement of one ChI a'molecule in PS I is the universal feature for Chi a-based PS I of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms.

In recent years, Single Sign-On for the Web is demanded highly and OpenID was proposed. OpenID is usually used as a method for verifying the identifier of users. By contrast, we use OpenID as a method for proving the attributes or knowledge of users. In this article, we suggest an access control method using OpenID with the optional factors of the users on the Web.

Polyethylene was modified with silanol groups on its surface by photografting of vinyltrimethoxysilane in vapor phase by using benzophenon as a polymerization initiator and by hydrolyzing the methoxysilane groups into the silanol groups with HCI solution. The modified polyethylene formed a dense and homogeneous apatite layer on its surface in a solution with ion concentrations 1.5 times those of human blood plasma within 21 days. This kind of biomimetic process could provide techniques for fabricating apatite-polymer composites with three dimensional structure analogous to the natural bone.

The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between bovine casein (CN) mRNA expression levels in mammary epithelial cells and lactation period, the yields of milk proteins and other parameters. The cells were collected from each cow's milk, which contained somatic cell counts (SCC) of less than 100,000 cells/ml. The levels of ${\alpha}s1-$, ${\alpha}s2-$, ${\beta}$- and ${\kappa}$-CN mRNA expression were significantly correlated with each other in mammary epithelial cells (p<0.01). All cows produced either less than 30 kg/day/cow or a over 30 kg/day/cow level of milk yield (MY). It was shown that the CN mRNA expression levels decreased gradually from the calving period to late lactation, when MY was over 30 kg/day/cow. The SCC tended to increase gradually during the course of lactation, but it was negatively correlated with milk protein and CN yields (p<0.01) when MY was less than 30 kg/day/cow. Moreover, there was a tendency for a negative correlation between SCC and ${\alpha}s1$-CN and ${\beta}$-CN mRNA expression level, when MY was less than 30 kg/day/cow (p<0.05).

The purpose of this study was to introduce our patient-specific bioactive porous titanium implant manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) and to establish the efficacy and safety of the implant for stand-alone anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) based on a prospective clinical trial. We designed a customized ACDF implant using patient-specific data and manufactured the implant using SLM. We produced a bioactive surface through a specific chemical and thermal treatment. Using this implant, we surgically treated four patients with cervical degenerative disc disease and evaluated the clinical and radiological results. We achieved successful bony union in all but one patient without autologous bone grafting within 1 year. We observed no implant subsidence during the follow-up period, and all clinical parameters improved significantly after surgery, with no reported implant-related adverse effects. Our customized bioactive porous titanium implant is a safe and promising implant for stand-alone ACDF.

The goal of our work was to develop a treatment system for restoring proprioception in patients experiencing low back pain and those who experience falls. For this purpose, we investigated postural sway during local vibratory stimulation in elderly people in the standing position by using our newly developed variable frequency vibratory stimulation device and a gravicorder. Vibratory stimulations of 30, 60, 150, or 240 Hz were applied to the patients’ lumbar multifidus (LM) or gastrocnemius soleus muscles (GM). These frequencies were determined from eigen response frequencies for proprioception. The eigen response frequencies for the Meissner corpuscle, muscle spindle, and the Vater-Pacini corpuscles were 30, 60, and 240 Hz, respectively. The relative proprioceptive weighting ratios at 30 and 240 Hz were significantly different between elderly patients with and those without low back pain. On the other hand, the relative difference of center of pressure length of the LM at 30 Hz was significantly different between elderly patients with and those without a history of falls. Therefore, the Meissner and Vater-Pacini corpuscles may be deteriorated in patients with low back pain. The Meissner corpuscle in the lumbar region may be deteriorated in those who experience falls.
