Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Diabetes Self-Care Barriers Assessment Scaler for Older Adults (DSCB-OA) in Korean older adults with type 2 diabetes. Method: To develop Korean version DSCB-OA used translation and back-translation method. Then, Korean version DSCB-OA was analyzed using data of 278 older adults with type 2 diabetes. Cronbach's alpha coefficient, item to total correlation and test-retest reliability was used for the reliability test, and factor analysis was used for the construct validity. Results: Cronabach's alpha of the DSCB-OA was .77, and item to total correlation coefficient ranged from -.13 to .56. The results of factor analysis showed DSCB-OA consisted of four factors(diet, exercise, blood sugar test, treatment) which explained 62.8% of total variance. Conclusion: The Diabetes Self-Care Barriers Assessment Scaler for Older Adults (DSCB-OA) was confirmed helpful tool for Korean older adults with type 2 diabetes.

<P>Herbal medicines including Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. (APL) have been traditionally used to treat inflammations including allergic disease as valuable medicinal properties. To investigate the attenuating ability of APL on inflammation, the NO release and ROS production, which play a key role in inflammatory and immune responses, was first tested using in vitro assay. The 80% ethanol extract of APL showed a significant activity to inhibit NO release and ROS production. In additional extracts from 80% ethanol extract of APL, n-butanol (BuOH) extract displayed the most potent anti-inflammatory effects based on in vitro assay. The extract also significantly reduced nitric oxide in lipopolysaccharide-activated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells (p < 0.05), and suppressed the nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, whereas the extract showed no inhibitory effect on cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, suggesting that the BuOH extract of APL could reduce the NO production through suppression of iNOS, but not COX-2. The BuOH extract also showed a significant effect in a carrageenan-induced rat paw edema in vivo model, consistent with our in vitro results. Our findings suggest that the BuOH extract of APL shows a potential anti-inflammatory activity, substantiating its traditional use in medicine.</P>

During a sampling at Nokdong harbor, southern coast of Korea in January 2017, the marine diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii cells infected by a novel parasitoid nanoflagellate were observed. While the development process of the trophosomes of the parasitoid was more similar to that of Pseudopirsonia mucosa, division pattern of the auxosomes was similar to that of Pirsonia species. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from 18S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the parasitoid infecting C. wailesii fell within the cercozoan groups and branched as a sister lineage of the clade consisting of Pseudopirsonia mucosa and the undescribed Cercomonas sp. SIC7235, with the sequence dissimilarity of 7.3% with Pseudopirsonia mucosa. All of these developmental and molecular characteristics suggest that the parasitoid nanoflagellate infecting the diatom C. wailesii is a new Pseudopirsonia species.
Enhanced Calreticulin Expression Promotes Calcium-dependent Apoptosis in Postnatal Cardiomyocytes

Calreticulin (CRT) is one of the major Ca2+ binding chaperone proteins of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and an unusual luminal ER protein. Postnatally elevated expression of CRT leads to impaired development of the cardiac conductive system and may be responsible for the pathology of complete heart block. In this study, the molecular mechanisms that affect Ca2+-dependent signal cascades were investigated using CRT-overexpressing cardiomyocytes. In particular, we asked whether calreticulin plays a critical role in the activation of Ca2+-dependent apoptosis. In the cells overexpressing CRT, the intracellular calcium concentration was significantly increased and the activity of PKC and level of SECAR2a mRNA were reduced. Phosphorylation of Akt and ERKs decreased compared to control. In addition the activity of the anti-apoptotic factor, Bcl-2, was decreased and the activities of pro-apoptotic factor, Bax, p53 and caspase 8 were increased, leading to a dramatic augmentation of caspase 3 activity. Our results suggest that enhanced CRT expression in mature cardiomyocytes disrupts intracellular calcium regulation, leading to calcium-dependent apoptosis.
