Medullary thyroid carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma are different subtypes of thyroid carcinoma. The concomitant occurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma and papil-lary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor is rare. We describe five cases of medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor. Four women and one man underwent thyroidectomy for treatment of thyroid cancer. Collision tumor was then detected by histopathologic finding. Genetic testing, point mutation of the BRAF gene or mutation of the RET gene was performed in three cases. However, only one case had point mutation of the BRAF gene. Exact diagnosis of this uncommon event is important because the strategies for treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma are different.

<P>Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) of the colon are at risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we analyzed the methylation status of selected genes as a risk marker in UC patients. We assessed methylation frequency of 4 genes [secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1), transcription elongation regulator 1-like (TCERG1L), fibrillin 2 (FBN2) and tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2 (TFPI2)] in biopsies of 36 UC patients. SFRP1 and TCERG1L genes showed high methylation frequencies but FBN2 and TFPI2 genes showed methylation frequencies of 50% in UC patients which suggests that our sensitive selective markers could detect half of the UC patients. We also confirmed the methylation status in UC tissues by bisulfite sequencing analysis. We compared the levels of methylation in terms of quantification between UC patients and CRC tumors. Importantly, methylation levels of these 4 genes were found to be significantly higher in CRC compared to UC patients, even though we noted a frequent methylation pattern in UC patients. Our data suggest that sensitive DNA methylation markers are able to identify UC patients and this would implicate the risk of CRC. Therefore, assessing the methylation of these 4 genes in UC patients could contribute to prevent the progression of severe disease with regular colonoscopic surveillance.</P>

This paper deals with development of a low cost VI(Voltage-Currrent)-tracer for PV(Photovoltaic) system using LabVIEW and DSP(Digital Signal Processor). Although the conventional VI-tracer is a high cost equipment, it can't abstract the detailed parameters of solar cell. To overcome above mentioned disadvantages, in this paper, a converter type VI-tracer is developed. The DSP, which controls the buck-boost DC-DC converter, is used to implement the proposed VI-tracer algorithm. The proposed VI-tracer can abstract more detailed parameters of solar cell; A(temperature constant), Rs(series resistance), and Rsh(parallel resistance). The authors emphasize that the proposed VI-tracer can satisfy the users who need to get various parameters. A comparison between the proposed VI-tracer and the conventional VI-tracer is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Vestibular dysfunction was observed in nearly 60% of diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy who complained of dizziness but showed no significant association with DAN. Diabetic patients who complained of dizziness need to examine both autonomic function and vestibular function.</P>

<P>Recently, our laboratory has developed a zeolite-templated synthesis route to microporous three-dimensional (3D) graphene-like carbons via lanthanum-catalyzed carbonization of ethylene. In the present work, we optimized the ethylene carbonization conditions for a zeolite X template, using an inexpensive Ca2+-ion catalyst instead of La3+-ion catalyst. This synthesis gave a high carbon yield based on the template pore volume, and exhibited no significant amount of carbon deposition on the external surfaces. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the carbon had 3D graphene-or nanotube-like frameworks along the surface of the zeolite pore walls, similar to the case of La3+ catalyst. With a 70-g batch of carbon synthesis, we demonstrated the potential of this synthesis route for large-scale production that would bring about a wide range of practical applications. There are several sensors in the liquid cargo ship. In the liquid cargo ship, we can get values from various sensors that are level sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, oxygen sensor, VOCs sensor, high overfill sensor, etc. It is important to guarantee the reliability of sensors. In order to guarantee the reliability of sensors, we have to study the diagnosis of sensor fault. The technology of smart sensor is widely used. In this paper, the technology of smart sensor is applied to diagnosis of level sensor fault for liquid cargo ship. In order to diagnose sensor fault and find the sensor position, in this paper, we proposed algorithms of diagnosis of sensor fault using independent sensor diagnosis unit and self fault diagnosis using sensor modeling. Proposed methods are demonstrated by experiment and simulation. The results show that the proposed approach is useful. Proposed methods are useful to develop smart level sensor.

Background: Psychological stress (PS) increases levels of endogenous glucocorticoids (GC) by activating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The negative effects of PS on skin barrier function are well-established. However, endogenous GC can exert their activity when cortisone (inactive form) is converted into cortisol (active form) by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type I (11ß-HSD1) in peripheral tissues. Objectives: we evaluated changes in 11ß-HSD1 and barrier function in response to PS and whether barrier function improved when PS was relieved by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment in patients with anxiety. Methods: Twenty-five medical students and five patients with anxiety or depression were enrolled. All measurements were repeated under PS and normal state. Results: Elevated 11ß-HSD1 correlated with increased cortisol in the stratum corneum and deterioration of barrier function in medical students under PS. Decreased 11ß-HSD1 levels and improved barrier function were observed after SSRI treatment. We also demonstrated that 11ß-HSD1 is important for increasing cortisol in the keratinocytes because cortisol increase was attenuated upon knockdown of 11ß-HSD1 in cell culture and upon applying a topical 11ß-HSD1 inhibitor in skin organ culture. Conclusion: These findings suggest that elevated 11ß-HSD1 under PS increases local GC levels, eventually impairs barrier function, and PS-alleviating drugs such as SSRIs may help treat PS-aggravated skin diseases.
Incidence Rates of Major Diseases of Kiwiberry in 2015 and 2016

Incidence rates of diseases in kiwiberry orchards were investigated monthly from late June to late September in Gwangyang and Boseong in 2015 and 2016. The impact of postharvest fruit rot was investigated during ripening after harvest. Bacterial canker was only observed on one single tree in 2015, but black rot, powdery mildew, leaf spot and blight, and postharvest fruit rot diseases were problematic throughout the study period in both 2015 and 2016. Incidence rates of the diseases varied with kiwiberry cultivar, region and sampling time. Incidence rates of powdery mildew, leaf spot and blight diseases increased significantly during the late growing stages near fruit harvest, while black rot peaked in late August. Incidence rate of postharvest fruit rot on fruit without fruit stalks was less than half of fruit with fruit stalks, regardless of kiwiberry cultivars. Among the four cultivars, Mansu was relatively resistant to black rot and postharvest fruit rot diseases. In our knowledge, this is the first report of various potential pathogens of kiwiberry in Korea.
