The effects of drying conditions on the antioxidant activities, luteolin, and volatile compounds of Chrysanthemi Flos flowers were evaluated. The flowers were dried with hot-air or far-infrared radiation at 40℃, 50℃ and 60℃, respectively, to reach 22±1% of moisture content. Each 10 g of the dried flowers were extracted with 100 mL of 95% ethanol. Increasing temperature in hot-air dried (HAD) conditions increased the antioxidant activities of the flower extracts. However, increasing temperature in far-infrared dried (FID) conditions decreased the antioxidant activities of the extracts. Luteolin, one of main flavonoids of Chrysanthemi Flos flowers, was present in the highest content at 60℃ FID flowers with a value of 139 ㎍/mL. Thirteen volatile compounds including camphor and β-caryophyllene were identified in chromatograms. Higher amount of the volatiles were found at 50℃ HAD and 40℃ FID. The results indicated that the antioxidant activities and volatile compounds of Chrysanthemi Flos flowers were significantly affected by drying conditions.

Mun, Sang Wook,Lim, Taek-Jin,Hwang, Eun Ha,Lee, Yeoun Joo,Jeon, Ung Bae,Park, Jae Hong The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2015 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.18 No.4
This report details a case of post-traumatic pseudocyst in the spleen that was successfully treated with sclerotherapy using ethanol. A sixteen-year-old boy visited our hospital for a follow-up examination of a splenic cyst. He had experienced blunt trauma to the abdomen three years prior to presentation. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a large cyst of the lower pole of the spleen. The cyst was $6.8{\times}9.5{\times}7.0cm$ and conservative management was tried. A follow-up ultrasonographic examination three years later revealed that the size of the cyst was unchanged and another treatment was needed to prevent complications. One session of sclerosis with ethanol (90 mL of 99% ethanol) percutaneously was applied to the cyst. A follow-up after four months revealed that the cyst had completely resolved.
Photocatalytic decomposition of graphene over a ZnO surface under UV irradiation
Mun, Dae-Hwa,Lee, Hyun Jung,Bae, Sukang,Kim, Tea-Wook,Lee, Sang Hyun The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.17 No.24

Highly reactive radicals or chemicals are generated on the surfaces of oxide semiconductors via reactions between photo-induced charges and ambient gas molecules. These radicals or chemicals have been utilized in heterogeneous photosynthesis and photocatalysis. In this study, we demonstrated that the photocatalytic reactions on the surface of ZnO promoted the oxidation and decomposition of graphene. Raman spectra were used to analyze the evolution of the G and 2D peaks. The oxidation of graphene on a ZnO substrate by UV radiation was faster than that in the absence of ZnO. During oxidation, the resistivity and the transmittance of graphene also increased. The XPS results showed that functional groups related to the oxidation of graphene were formed during the photocatalytic reactions. This simple and clean approach will be also effective for selective surface modification by enhancing the surface chemical reactions that pattern graphene via oxidation.

Graphic Abstract

Selective oxidation and decomposition of graphene via photocatalytic reactions on a zinc oxide surface under UV irradiation.

Carvone is one of the naturally occurring monoterpenes, the largest class of secondary metabolites in plants, and exists in two enantiomers, R-carvone (R-car) and S-car. The objective of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of R-car and S-car with gentamicin (GET) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a major human pathogen that causes serious problems, including hospital-acquired pneumonia, abscesses and surgical wound infections. Nosocomial MRSA infections often exhibit multidrug resistance. In the present study, antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed with R-car, S-car and GET using the broth microdilution method. Minimal inhibitory concentration values for R- and S-car against six different strains of S. aureus ranged between 500 and 1,000 μg/ml. Anti-MRSA activity was evaluated using the checkerboard and time-kill assays to investigate the potential synergistic effects of different combinations of the carvone enantiomers and GET. R-car plus S-car, R-car plus GET and S-car plus GET exhibited significant synergistic activity against MRSA. These findings suggest that the single-agent anti-MRSA activities of R-car, S-car and GET are effectively increased through combination therapy. This study showed that carvone may be a potential adjuvant antimicrobial agent.

Approximate Method for Predicting Inelastic Displacement of SDF Systems
Bae, Mun Su,Kim, Jong Bo,Han, Sang Whan Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2008 Key engineering materials Vol.385 No.-

The objective of this study is to develop inelastic displacement ratio for calculating peak inelastic displacement of SDF systems. The inelastic displacement ratio is defined as the ratio of peak displacement of inelastic SDF system to the peak displacement of corresponding elastic SDF system. Statistical studies are carried out to estimate median inelastic displacement ratios and those dispersion of bilinear SDF systems with given yield-strength reduction factors, natural periods, post-yield stiffness ratios and damping ratios ranging from 1 to 20% when subjected to 60 earthquake ground motions recorded on stiff soil sites. This study shows that equal displacement rule overestimates the peak inelastic displacement of the system which has a fundamental period ranging from the intermediate to long period. It is also observed that no significant difference was observed in the value of median inelastic displacement ratio across site classes.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is attributable to about 15% of cause of chronic liver disease in Korea. We aimed to study the epidemiological and clinical features of a prospective, multicenter cohort of HCV infection in Korea. Methods: A total 1,173 adult patients showing positive results for anti-HCV were prospectively enrolled and offered to complete the questionnaire survey on the risk factors of HCV infection from January 2007 to December 2011 at 5 university hospitals. Predefined demographic, clinical, and virological variables were collected and analysed. Results: The 1,173 subjects of the HCV cohort showed that mean age of 55.4 years, and male proportion of 48.3%, and diagnostic category of acute hepatitis (n=64, 5.5%), past infection (n=54, 4.6%), chronic hepatitis (n=772, 65.8%), liver cirrhosis (n=183, 15.6%), and hepatocellular carcinoma (n=100, 8.5%). The HCV genotypes were distributed into 5 types: genotype 1 (n=489, 52.4%), genotype 2 (n=421, 45.1%, genotype 3 (n=7, 0.8%), genotype 4 (n=2, 0.2%), and genotype 6 (n=9, 1.0%) with mixed genotypes (n=5, 0.5%). Hepatitis B virus coinfection rate was 3.5%. Liver biopsy was undertaken in (n=298, 20.0%), and the antiviral therapy against HCV had been undertaken in 42.8%. The risk factors were found as below: blood transfusion before 1995 (55.9%), needle stick injury (7.4%), acupuncture (82.5%), tattooing (36.0%), piercing (35.0%), intravenous drug abuse (IVDU) (5.0%), multiple sex partners more than 3 (21.0%), living with HCV-infected person (2.6%). Interestingly, patients living in Busan area showed higher frequency of IVDU (10.3%) compared to those in Capital area (4.5%).

Abstract

Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is the most frequent and aggressive form of brain tumors in adults. However, the development of more efficient and safe nonviral vector gene therapy represents a promising therapeutic approach, using a tumor-specific killer gene, named apoptin. In this study, we describe the efficacy of non-viral gene delivery vectors, the amino acid-conjugated PAMAM derivatives (PAMAM-H-R and PAMAM-H-K) in delivering a therapeutic gene, displaying affinity toward human primary glioma cells (GBL-14 cells) and dermal fibroblasts. We analyzed transfection efficiency, using luciferase (Luci) and a pDNA encoding for enhanced fluorescent protein (EGFP), and cytotoxicity in both cells. The results show that transfection efficiency of PAMAM-H-R improved compared to native PAMAM dendrimer, but cytotoxicity of PAMAM-H-R and PAMAM-H-K were very low. We treated both cells with a polyplex formation of PAMAM-H-R or PAMAM-H-K/apoptin, and analyzed their cellular uptake and localization by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Furthermore, we analyzed the endosomal escape effect using TEM images, and found that PAMAM-H-R showed very fast escape from endosome to the cytosol. Caspase 3 activity assay, cell cycle distribution, and JC-1 analysis showed apoptosis induced by apoptin in GBL-14 cells. This indicates that PAMAM-H-R can be a potential nonviral vector gene delivery carrier for brain tumor therapy. The present study demonstrates that PAMAM-H-R/apoptin gene polyplex can be used as an effective therapeutic candidate for GBM due to its selective induction of apoptosis in primary glioma cells as a potential nonviral gene delivery carrier for brain tumor therapy.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
