This paper proposes the algorithm for forward link adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) and the detailed design for a satellite communication system to improve network reliability and system throughput. In the ACM scheme, the coding and modulation schemes are changed by as much as the channel can provide depending on the quality of the communication link. To implement the forward link ACM system in the Ka-band, channel prediction and modulation/coding decision methods are proposed and simulated. The parameters of the adaptive filter predictor based on the least mean square are optimized, the minimum mean square error of the channel predictor is 0.0608 when step size and the number of filter tap are 0.0001 and 4, respectively. A test-bed is set up to verify the forward link ACM system, and a test is performed using a Ka-band satellite (i.e., Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite [COMS]). This test verifies that the ACM scheme can increase the system throughput.
One-Pot Enzymatic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide and Utilization for Improved Microbial Growth
Hong, Sung-Gil,Jeon, Hancheol,Kim, Han Sol,Jun, Seung-Hyun,Jin, EonSeon,Kim, Jungbae American Chemical Society 2015 Environmental science & technology Vol.49 No.7
<P>We developed a process for one-pot CO2 conversion and utilization based on simple conversion of CO2 to bicarbonate at ambient temperature with no energy input, by using the cross-linking-based composites of carboxylated polyaniline nanofibers (cPANFs) and carbonic anhydrase. Carbonic anhydrase was immobilized on cPANFs via the approach of magnetically separable enzyme precipitate coatings (Mag-EPC), which consists of covalent enzyme attachment, enzyme precipitation, and cross-linking with amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. Mag-EPC showed a half-life of 236 days under shaking, even resistance to 70% ethanol sterilization, and recyclability via facile magnetic separation. For one-pot CO2 conversion and utilization, Mag-EPC was used to accelerate the growth of microalga by supplying bicarbonate from CO2, representing 1.8-fold increase of cell concentration when compared to the control sample. After two repeated uses via simple magnetic separation, the cell concentration with Mag-EPC was maintained as high as the first cycle. This one-pot CO2 conversion and utilization is an alternative as well as complementary process to adsorption-based CO2 capture and storage as an environmentally friendly approach, demanding no energy input based on the effective action of the stabilized enzyme system.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2015/esthag.2015.49.issue-7/es505143f/production/images/medium/es-2014-05143f_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es505143f'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Background/Aims: The negative effects on the eradication success of Helicobacter pylori infection after previous exposure to macrolides, including clarithromycin on clarithromycin-based first-line therapy have been demonstrated. However, whether this is true for metronidazole-based second-line quadruple therapy remains unclear. We investigated the relationship between past administration of metronidazole and the failure of metronidazole-based second-line quadruple therapy in patients with H. pylori infection. Methods: Patients over 20 years of age who were diagnosed with H. pylori infection between January 1998 and March 2016 were enrolled in this study. The relationship between the clinical parameters and the results of a C13-urea breath test after metronidazole-based second-line quadruple therapy was analyzed in patients for whom clarithromycin-based triple therapy failed to eradicate H. pylori. Results: The H. pylori eradication failure rate was significantly higher in patients with a history of metronidazole use than in patients without a history of metronidazole use (p = 0.011). Multivariable analysis showed that the odds ratio of previous metronidazole use for eradication failure was 3.468 (95% confidence interval, 1.391 to 8.649; p = 0.008). In the subgroup analysis of patients with a history of metronidazole use, the duration of metronidazole use and interval between its use and eradication therapy did not significantly affect H. pylori eradication failure. Conclusions: Previous exposure to metronidazole was a significant risk factor for treatment failure of metronidazole-based second-line quadruple therapy; therefore, this should be considered when establishing a treatment strategy for patients with H. pylori infection.

HONG, Mi-Na,HAN, Na-Kyung,LEE, Hyung-Chul,KO, Young-Kyu,CHI, Sung-Gil,LEE, Yun-Sil,GIMM, Yoon-Myung,MYUNG, Sung-Ho,LEE, Jae-Seon Journal of Radiation Research Editorial Committee 2012 JOURNAL OF RADIATION RESEARCH Vol.53 No.1
<P>The aim of this study was to determine whether extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) could affect intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and antioxidant enzyme activity. After MCF10A human breast epithelial cells were exposed to 1 mT of 60 Hz ELF-MF for 4 hours, intracellular ROS level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio were measured. The cells exposed to ELF-MF did not evidence statistically significant changes in the above-mentioned biological parameters as compared to either the incubator controls or sham-exposed cells. By way of contrast, the IR-exposed cells exhibited marked changes in ROS level, SOD activity, and GSH/GSSG ratio. When we assessed morphological changes and senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) activity, only the IR-exposed cells were positive. According to our results, it could be concluded that ELF-MF has no effect on intracellular ROS level, SOD activity, and GSH/GSSG ratio under our exposure condition.</P>

Background: Although cross-sectional studies have suggested a relationship between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and hypomagnesemia, no large-scale cohort study has been conducted to date. Here, we examined the changes in serum magnesium levels in response to PPI use. We hypothesized that PPI use might change the serum magnesium concentration. Methods: Of the 2,892 patients hospitalized for percutaneous coronary intervention between January 2007 and May 2012, 1,076 patients with normal baseline (1.6- 2.5 mg/dL) and follow-up serum magnesium concentrations were enrolled. These patients were divided into two groups: the PPI group and the control group. Results: The mean follow-up period was 9.5172.94 months. The incidence of hypomagnesemia (o1.6 mg/dL) was 0.4% (3/834) in the PPI group and 0.4% (1/242) in the control group (P ¼0.904). The change in magnesium levels did not differ between the two groups, and this result was maintained in the analysis of covariance after adjusting for confounding factors (P ¼ 0.381). Moreover, magnesium levels did not significantly differ between the long-term (duration of use Z12 months, n ¼ 71) and short-term PPI groups (duration of use o12 months, n ¼ 763), and the control group (n ¼ 242; P ¼ 0.620). The effect of PPI use on change in serum magnesium concentration was affected by the use of multiple diuretics ( 0.0170.25 mg/dL; P ¼ 0.025), although a single diuretic use with PPI did not alter the change in magnesium level (0.1270.27 mg/dL). Conclusion: Changes in magnesium levels might be subtle after PPI use in patients with normal baseline magnesium values.
