<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Genetic variations such as single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and point mutations are important biomarkers to monitor disease prognosis and diagnosis. In this study, we developed a novel rotary microfluidic device which can perform multiplex SNP typing on the mutation sites of TP53 genes. The microdevice consists of three glass layers: a channel wafer, a Ti/Pt electrode-patterned resistance temperature detector (RTD) wafer, and a rotary plate in which twelve reaction chambers were fabricated. A series of sample injection, ligation-rolling circle amplification (L-RCA) reaction, and fluorescence detection of the resultant amplicons could be executed by rotating the top rotary plate, identifying five mutation points related with cancer prognosis. The use of the rotary plate eliminates the necessity of microvalves and micropumps to control the microfluidic flow in the channel, simplifying the chip design and chip operation for multiplex SNP detection. Due to the aging population, national medical expenses are on the rise in developed countries, including Korea. In response to this issue, these countries have turned to health functional foods as a preventative measure, focusing on disease prevention rather than treatment. Three decades ago, the US implemented the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which allowed for labeling of product functions to inform the public and encourage consumption. Japan has also established and implemented Food for Specialized Health Uses (FOSHU) for the same purpose. However, in recent years, there have been attempts in both the US and EU to evaluate the effectiveness of such efforts over the past 30 years. Reports by the US Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and Food Supplements Europe in the EU have shown that some health functional foods have had significant effects on reducing medical costs. Korea also enacted the Health Functional Food Act in 2004 to regulate the manufacturing and labeling of health functional foods. However, unlike the US and EU, the effects of health functional foods, particularly in reducing medical costs, have not been evaluated in Korea. It is imperative for Korea to evaluate the potential of various health functional foods in reducing medical expenses as soon as possible. This will lead to the prevention of unnecessary abuse of health functional foods, promotion of the use of necessary ones, and more effective contribution of health functional foods to the public health.

<P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess great therapeutic potential. Efficient<I> in vitro</I> expansion of MSCs is however necessary for their clinical application. The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells, and it has been used as a coating substrate for cell culture. In this study, we have aimed to improve the functionality and stemness of MSCs during culture using poly-L-lysine (PLL). Functionality of MSCs was analysed by cell cycle analysis, differentiation assay, β-galactosidase staining, and RT-PCR. Furthermore, we assessed the global gene expression profile of MSCs on uncoated and PLL-coated plates. MSCs on PLL-coated plates exhibited a faster growth rate with increased S-phase and upregulated expression of the stemness markers. In addition, their osteogenic differentiation potential was increased, and genes involved in cell adhesion, FGF-2 signalling, cell cycle, stemness, cell differentiation, and cell proliferation were upregulated, compared to that of the MSCs cultured on uncoated plates. We also confirmed that MSCs on uncoated plates expressed higher β-galactosidase than the MSCs on PLL-coated plates. We demonstrate that PLL provides favourable microenvironment for MSC culture by reversing the replicative senescence. This method will significantly contribute to effective preparation of MSCs for cellular therapy.</P>
Effect of Phosphatidylserine Intake on Health Status in Human

With the rapid growth of health functional foods (HFFs), both consumers of HFFs and government authorities have shown significant interest in assessing the health effects of these products. Given these circumstances, we previously conducted a study on the effect of vitamin D. In this study, we focused on examining the health benefits of phosphatidylserine, a lipid recommended for cognitive dysfunction in the elderly. We evaluated the health status of 2,427 participants by having them rate their health status on a 10-point scale ranging from −5 to 5, comparing it to their status one year prior. To ensure the validity of the findings, we further analyzed the resulting scores by comparing consumers and non-consumers across different categories using propensity score matching to minimize potential biases arising from endogeneity among different categories. The results were as follows. The average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) of total 76 consumers and 2,351 non-consumers were 1.447 and 0.768, respectively, which are significantly different (P < 0.001), indicating that intake of phosphatidylserine improves the health status. The difference in the ATT of the consumers and non-consumers was analyzed across the categories and a significant difference was observed from the consumers in the following categories; male (1.0273, P < 0.01) and individuals who are under 50 (0.9889, P < 0.01), living in non-capital area (1.2444, P < 0.01), having the knowledge about HFFs (0.6594, P < 0.01), and experiencing in phosphatidylserine-related diseases such as cognition dysfunction (1.5778, P < 0.01). These findings suggest that intake of phosphatidylserine has a beneficial effect on health particularly, of men, younger individuals in non-capital area, and those experiencing cognitive dysfunction.
무선 센서 네트워크의 링크 에러율을 고려한 에너지소모가 균등한 멀티 홉 라우팅 기법

무선 센서 네트워크에서 센서 노드의 수명은 배터리에 의해 제한되므로 에너지는 가장 중요한 고려사항이다. 기존의 에너지 효율적인 라우팅 프로토콜들은 대부분 에너지 소비를 최소화하기 위해 최소 에너지 경로를 사용하는데, 이는 노드들 간의 잔류에너지를 불균등하게 만든다. 그 결과 에너지 효율적인 경로 상에 있는 노드들의 전원이 빠르게 고갈되고 네트워크에 참여할 수 없게 된다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 노드들의 에너지 소모를 균등하게 만드는 기법들이 제안되고 있다. 무선 환경에서는 링크의 품질에 따른 재전송으로 불필요한 에너지 소모가 발생하는데 대부분의 기법들은 링크 에러율을 고려하지 않고 있다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 잔여 에너지와 링크 에러율을 고려하여 균등한 에너지 소모를 가지는 클러스터 기반의 멀티 홉 라우팅 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 기법은 링크 에러율을 고려하기 때문에 불필요한 재전송에 따른 에너지 소비를 줄이고 트래픽도 골고루 분산시킨다. 시뮬레이션 결과 타 기법에 비해 제안하는 기법은 재전송 횟수가 감소하여 에너지 효율적이었고, 에너지 소모가 균등한 경로를 사용하여 모든 노드가 네트워크에 참여하는 기간이 연장되었다. In wireless sensor networks, energy is the most important consideration because the lifetime of the sensor node is limited by battery. Most of the existing energy efficient routing protocols use the minimum energy path to minimize energy consumption, which causes an unbalanced distribution of residual energy among nodes. As a result, the power of nodes on energy efficient paths is quickly depletes resulting in inactive. To solve these problems, a method to equalize the energy consumption of the nodes has been proposed, but do not consider the link error rate in the wireless environment. In this paper, we propose a uniform energy consumption of cluster-based multi-hop routing mechanism considering the residual energy and the link error rate. This mechanism reduces energy consumption caused by unnecessary retransmissions and distributes traffic evenly over the network because considering the link error rate. The simulation results compared to other mechanisms, the proposed mechanism is energy-efficient by reducing the number of retransmissions and activation time of all nodes involved in the network has been extended by using the energy balanced path.
