This study was investigated the effects of various system parameters on the absorption of carbon dioxide into absorption solution. An aqueous potassium carbonate solution was used as a chemical absorbent in order to figure out the effect of chemical reaction. For this purpose, the chemical analysis of potassium carbonate solution was performed. The changes of pressure, temperature, K₂CO₃solution flow/feed gas ratio and solution concentration in the absorber and the changes of pressure and temperature in the stripper were also analyzed. The analysis result shows that K₂CO₃ concentration in potassium carbonate solution was 99.6%. The optimum pressure was found to be 27.0㎏/㎠ and the optimum temperature was to be 68℃, the optimum concentration of potassium carbonate solution was to be 26.0wt% in the absorber. The CO₂ leakage decreased with the increment of the K₂CO₃ solution flow/feed gas ratio. But the H₂ leakage in the CO₂ product increased at or above the K₂CO₃ solution flow/feed gas ratio of 1.10. This H₂ leakage induced by the loss of ammonia production. The effects of the changes of the operation condition of the CO₂ stripper to the K₂CO₃ conversion are as follows. The K₂CO₃ conversion decreased as the pressure decreased. The K₂CO₃ conversion increased as the temperature increased. However, increasing the temperature without decreasing the pressure did not bring positive effect. The optimum pressure was found to be 0.45㎏/㎠.
Sub-acute toxicity and effect of Hwangryunhaedok-tang on human drug-metabolizing enzymes

Objectives: Hwangryunhaedok-tang (HHT; Huanglianjiedu-tang, Orengedoku-to), a traditional herbal formula, is used for treating inflammation, hypertension, gastritis, liver dysfunction, cerebrovascular diseases, dermatitis and dementia. The objective of this study was to assess the sub-acute toxicity of HHT in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, and its effect on the activities of human microsomal cytochrome P450s (CYP450s) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs). Methods: Male and female SD rats were orally administered HHT once daily at doses of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg for 4 weeks. We analyzed mortality, clinical observations, body weight, food consumption, organ weights, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, and histopathology. The activities of major human CYP450s (CYP1A2, CYP3A4, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP2E1) and UGTs (UGT1A1, UGT1A4, and UGT2B7) were assessed using in vitro fluorescence- and luminescence-based enzyme assays, respectively. Results: No toxicologically significant changes related to the repeated administration of HHT were observed in both male and female SD rats. The no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) value was more than 2000 mg/kg/day for both sexes. HHT inhibited the activities of human microsomal CYP1A2, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP2E1, whereas it weakly inhibited the activities of CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, and UGT1A1. In addition, HHT negligibly inhibited the activities of human microsomal UGT1A4 and UGT2B7 with $IC_{50}$ values in excess of $1000{\mu}g/mL$. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that HHT may be safe for repeated administration up to 4 weeks. In addition, these findings provide information on the safety and effectiveness of HHT when co-administered with conventional drugs.

<P><I>Banhasasim-tang</I> (BHSST) is a Korean traditional herbal formula comprising eight medicinal herbs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of BHSST using macrophage and keratinocyte cell lines. First, we evaluated the effects of BHSST on inflammatory mediator and cytokine production in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. BHSST markedly inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E<SUB>2</SUB> (PGE<SUB>2</SUB>), and interleukin- (IL-) 6. BHSST significantly suppressed the protein expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and phosphorylated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-<I>κ</I>B) p65 in RAW 264.7 cells. Second, we examined whether BHSST influences the production of chemokines and STAT1 phosphorylation in tumor necrosis factor-<I>α</I>/interferon-<I>γ</I> TI-stimulated HaCaT keratinocytes. BHSST significantly suppressed the production of RANTES/CCL5, TARC/CCL17, MDC/CCL22, and IL-8 in TI-stimulated HaCaT cells. BHSST also suppressed TI-induced phosphorylation of STAT1 in HaCaT cells. These results suggest that BHSST may be useful as an anti-inflammatory agent, especially for inflammatory skin diseases.</P>
