Since the late 1980's, a new statistical method called geostatistics has been employed in fisheries research. The main feature of this method is adopting the idea of autocorrelation among the data. Geostatistics is able to handle autocorrelated data and reduce standard error of the estimator. The practical procedures of applying 1- D transitive theory of geostatistics to the results of the acoustic survey for juvenile walleye pollock distributed along the southeastern coast of Hokkaido are presented. By adopting geostatistics, the confidence of the estimated abundance was three times higher than classical statistics.

Objectives: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) commonly occur in the frail elderly. Displacement in the posterior pelvic ring is recognized as the key sign of instability. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between computer tomography (CT)-based frailty markers and displacement of the posterior pelvic ring within 7 days after injury. Methods: This retrospective study included 49 patients (42 females, 7 males) with FFP (type I 10, type II 24, type III 12, type IV 3). On a CT slice at the level of the third lumbar vertebra, skeletal muscle area, skeletal muscle radiation attenuation, and skeletal muscle index (SMI) were calculated as sarcopenia markers. Osteopenia was measured with trabecular region of interest attenuation technique on the same CT slice. Results: There was no difference in the demographics between non-displaced and displaced FFP. CT-based data showed that patients with FFP had osteopenia. However, no difference was found between non-displaced and displaced FFP. SMI was higher in FFP types III/IV than non-displaced FFP when CT-based data on sarcopenia were compared among all patients. Female patients with FFP demonstrated similar results. Logistic regression analysis using the demographics and CT-based markers on sarcopenia and osteopenia revealed that SMI was a potential determinant of displacement of the posterior pelvic ring fractures. Conclusions: There was inverse association between sarcopenia and displacement of the posterior pelvic ring in the early phase of FFP. Relatively preserved muscle may develop displacement in the elderly with osteopenia.

As a high specific speed pump, the contra-rotating axial flow pump with two rotors rotating reversely has been proved with higher hydraulic and cavitation performance, while in our previous researches, the potential interaction between two blade rows was distinctly observed for our prototype rotors designed with equal rotational speed for both front and rear rotors. Based on the theoretical and experimental evidences, a rotational speed optimization methodology was proposed and applied in the design of a new combination of contra-rotating rotors, primarily in expectation of the optimized blade pressure distributions as well as pertinently improved hydraulic performances including cavitation performance. In the present study, given one stationary and two rotating frames in the contra-rotating rotors case, a pressure measurement concept taking account of the revolutions of both front and rear rotors simultaneously was adopted. The casing wall pressure data sampled in time domain was successfully transferred into space domain, by which the ensemble averaged blade-to-blade pressure distributions at the blade tip of two contra-rotating rotors under different operation conditions were studied. It could be seen that the rotor pair with the optimized rotational speed combination as well as work division, shows more reasonable blade-to-blade pressure distribution and well weakened potential interaction. Moreover, combining the loading curves estimated by the measured casing wall pressure, the cavitation performance of the rotor pairs with new rotational speed combination were proved to be superior to those of the prototype pairs.

Background Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a rare causative pathogen ofbrain abscess that is often found in immunocompromised patients. Although patients with supratentorial listerial abscesses showed a longer survival with surgical drainage, the standardtherapy for patients with subtentorial lesions has not been established. Case Report We report herein a patient with supra- and subtentorial brain abscesses causedby L. monocytogenes infection. These abscesses did not respond to antibiotics, and his symptoms gradually worsened. Drainage was not indicated for subtentorial lesions, and the patientwas additionally treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which dramatically reduced the volume of abscesses and improved the symptoms. Conclusions This is the first report of drastic therapy for a patient with listerial brain abscesses involving combined antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The findings suggestthat hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a good option for treating patients with deep-seated listerialabscesses and for who surgical drainage is not indicated.
Study on Improvement in Resolution of Synthetic Aperture Sonar Using Spatial Filter

A synthetic aperture sonar(SAS) achieving high azimuth resolution at long range has been studied for seafloor mapping. Images obtained from SAS, however, are not sufficient to acquire detailed information of seabed. Hence, in order to obtain the sharp image of the object, it is necessary to improve the resolution of the images. Beam forming techniques steer direction with the greatest sensitivity. We propose an application of beam forming to SAS for the accuracy improvement of imagery. Computer simulation and real data analysis show that an improvement of azimuth resolution is achieved and the reare differences between simulation rsults and real data results.
