Link Adaptation for Full Duplex Systems
Sangchoon Kim 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2018 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.7 No.4
This paper presents a link adaptation scheme for adaptive full duplex (AFD) systems. The signal modulation levels and communication link patterns are adaptively selected according to the changing channel conditions. The link pattern selection process consists of two successive steps such as a transmit-receive antenna pair selection based on maximum sum rate or minimum maximum symbol error rate, and an adaptive modulation based on maximum minimum norm. In AFD systems, the antennas of both nodes are jointly determined with modulation levels depending on the channel conditions. An adaptive algorithm with relatively low complexity is also proposed to select the link parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed AFD system offers significant bit error rate (BER) performance improvement compared with conventional full duplex systems with perfect or imperfect self-interference cancellation under the same fixed sum rate.
Link selection based on switching between full-duplex and half-duplex modes
Kim, Sangchoon Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2020 ETRI Journal Vol.42 No.1
Multiple-input multiple-output systems can achieve a full sum rate (SR) via full duplex (FD). However, its performance is degraded by self-interference (SI) that occurs between the transmitter and receiver at the same node and thus is constrained by error floors. Conversely, half duplex (HD) can avoid the SI albeit at lower spectral efficiency, and the slope of its error curve is determined by the diversity order. In this study, a link selection scheme based on switching between FD and HD is examined as a simple method to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FD systems. In the proposed link selection algorithm, either FD or HD is selected based on the received minimum distance and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. Simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid FD/HD switching system offers significant BER performance improvement when compared with that of the conventional FD and FD based on only the received minimum distance under the same fixed SR. Under relatively sufficient SI cancellation, it is demonstrated to outperform the HD with a diversity advantage in low and medium signal-to-noise ratio region.
Performance Analysis of LR-aided ZF Receiver for MIMO Systems
Kim, Sangchoon The Institute of Internet 2018 International journal of advanced smart convergenc Vol.7 No.3
Lattice-reduction (LR) techniques have been developed for signal detection in spatial multiplexing multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems to obtain the largest diversity gain. Thus, an LR-assisted zero-forcing (ZF) receiver can achieve the maximum diversity gain in spatial multiplexing MIMO systems. In this paper, a simplified analysis of the achievable diversity gain is presented by fitting the channel coefficients lattice-reduced by a complex Lenstra-Lenstra-$Lov{\acute{a}}z$ (LLL) algorithm into approximated Gaussian random variables. It will be shown that the maximum diversity gain corresponding to two times the number of receive antennas can be achieved by the LR-based ZF detector. In addition, the approximated bit error rate (BER) expression is also derived. Finally, the analytical BER performance is comparatively studied with the simulated results.
A Low-Complexity Antenna Selection Algorithm for Quadrature Spatial Modulation Systems
Kim, Sangchoon The Institute of Internet 2017 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.9 No.1
In this work, an efficient transmit antenna selection approach for the quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) systems is proposed. The conventional Euclidean distance antenna selection (EDAS)-based schemes in QSM have too high computational complexity for practical use. The proposed antenna selection algorithm is based on approximation of the EDAS decision metric employed for QSM. The elimination of imaginary parts in the decision metric enables decoupling of the approximated decision metric, which enormously reduces the complexity. The proposed method is also evaluated via simulations in terms of symbol error rate (SER) performance and compared with the conventional EDAS methods in QSM systems.

Switching between Spatial Modulation and Quadrature Spatial Modulation
Sangchoon Kim 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2019 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.8 No.3
Spatial modulation (SM) is the first proposed space modulation technique. By further utilizing the quadrature spatial dimension, quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) has been developed as an amendment to SM system to enhance the overall spectral efficiency. Both techniques are capable of entirely eliminating interchannel interference (ICI) at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a simple adaptive hybrid switching transmission scheme to obtain better system performance than SM and QSM systems under a fixed transmission date rate. The presented modulator selection criterion for switching between spatial modulator and quadrature spatial modulator is based on the larger received minimum distance of spatial modulator and quadrature spatial modulator to exploit the spatial channel freedom. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that the proposed hybrid SM and QSM switching system yields lower error performance than the conventional SM and QSM systems under the same fixed data rate and thus can provide signal to noise ratio (SNR) gain.
Effects of Multiple Transmit Antennas on CDMA Acquisition Performance in Correlated MIMO Channel
Sangchoon Kim,Jinyoung An,Sunyoung Beak 대한전자공학회 2007 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2007 No.7
The performance of a MIMO CDMA uplink code acquisition system is analyzed by considering spatial fading correlations. The detection performance in the presence of spatially correlated MIMO channel is presented. It is shown that the acquisition performance depends on the degree of spatial fading correlations. It is surprisingly seen that a MIMO code acquisition system provides worse performance than SIMO.
Transmit Antenna Selection for Quadrature Spatial Modulation Systems with Power Allocation
Sangchoon Kim 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2020 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.9 No.1
We consider transmit antenna selection combined with power allocation for quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) systems to improve the error rate performance. The Euclidean distance-based joint optimization criterion is presented for transmit antenna selection and power allocation in QSM. It requires an exhaustive search and thus high computational complexity. Thus its reduced-complexity algorithm is proposed with a strategy of decoupling, which is employed to successively find transmit antennas and power allocation factors. First, transmit antennas are selected without considering power allocation. After selecting transmit antennas, power allocation factors are determined. Simulation results demonstrate considerable performance gains with lower complexity for transmit antenna selected QSM systems with power allocation, which can be achieved with limited rate feedback.
