This study s purpose was to examine the impact of loneliness, and two types of social support(functional and structural) on the suicidal ideation among elderly living alone. About 254 research participants were recruited from Seoul City and other cities in Gyeonggi-do and finished the questionnaires of loneliness, perceived social support, structural social support, and the suicidal ideation. Data were entered into multiple regression analyses. The finding of this research study indicates that loneliness was an important predictor for suicidal ideation. Thus, increased loneliness was associated with a high level of the suicidal ideation. This research study result showed a moderating effect of functional social support. However, structural social support did not moderate relationship between loneliness and suicidal ideation. This research study would provide implications for social work practices.

Bursaphelenchus xylophilus has been recognized as a causal pathogen of pine wilt disease (PWD). In order to identify relevant molecular biomarkers, we selected a variable region of endo-β-1,4-glucanase (β14-gcn) which was cloned from the cDNA of B. xylophilus and B. mucronatus. We then identified three novel β14-gcn isoforms: Bm-β14-gcn and Bm-β14-gcni from B. mucronatus, and Bx-β14-gcn from B. xylophilus. Bm-β14-gcn and Bx-β14-gcn were found to be identical, whereas Bm-β14-gcni was unique to B. mucronatus. These isoforms are Bursaphelenchus-specific and may be employed as molecular markers for the diagnosis of PWD. Our phylogenetic analysis showed that these β14-gcns from Bursaphelenchus species were associated most closely with fungal β14-gcns.

Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, the earliest book of herbal medicine, Veratrum nigrum (VN) has antagonistic features against Panax ginseng (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPARγ and C/EBPα, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPARγ and C/EBPα expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.

This study investigated the ACE-inhibitory effect of yogurt beverage fortified with hydrolysates as well as the suitability of hydrolysates as a nutraceutical additive to yogurt beverage. Three whey protein hydrolysates hydrolyzed by alcalase, protamex, and trypsin were each added to yogurt beverage at concentrations of 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL. Yogurt beverage fortified with 2.5 mg/mL of hydrolysates had 61-69% ACE-inhibitory activity, whereas yogurt beverage fortified with 5 mg/ mL of hydrolysates showed 74% ACE-inhibitory activity. There were no significant differences in ACE-inhibitory activity between the alcalase or protamex hydrolysates during storage; however, trypsin hydrolysate exhibited significant differences. On the other hand, physicochemical characteristics such as pH (3.47-3.77), titratable acidity (0.81-0.84%), colority, viable cell count, and sensory qualities were not significantly different among the tested yogurt beverage samples during storage. These results showed that yogurt beverage fortified with whey protein hydrolysates maintained antihypertensive activity and underwent no unfavorable changes in physicochemical characteristics regardless of enzyme type.

This study is conducted to evaluate the effects of the mixing ratio between pork loin and chicken breast for textural and sensory properties of emulsion sausages. Meat homogenates are prepared by using five mixing ratios between pork loin and chicken breast (100:0, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, and 0:100), and the emulsion sausages are also formulated with five mixing ratios. The additions of chicken breast increase the salt soluble protein solubility due to high pH levels of chicken breast, thereby resulting in the reduction of cooking losses. In addition, the apparent viscosity of meat homogenates increase with increasing amounts of chicken breast. In terms of emulsion sausages formulated with pork loin and chicken breast, the addition of chicken breast above 50% may contribute to a softer and more flexible texture of emulsion sausages. For sensory evaluations, an increase in the added amount of chicken breast contributes to a rich umami taste and deeper flavor within the emulsion sausages, resulting in the high overall acceptance score for the formulation of 0-30% pork loin and 70-100% chicken breast. Therefore, the optimal mixing ratios between pork loin and chicken breast are 0-30% and 70-100% for enhancing the textural and sensory properties of emulsion sausages

The purpose of this study compared the ability of feedback breathing training (FBT) and balloon blowing training to enhance the breathing of elderly people. The subjects were randomly and evenly divided into a feedback breathing training group (FBTG) and a balloon blowing training group (BBTG). Each group trained 3 times a week for 4 weeks, with the training suspended during the last 2 weeks. Pulmonary function measurements were obtained before the test and 2, 4 and 6 weeks after the test: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF) and vital capacity (VC). A repeatedmeasures ANOVA was conducted for the significance test. The FBT resulted in a significant increase in the FVC, FEV1/FVC, PEF, and VC of the elderly smokers after 4 weeks and a significant decrease in the FVC, FEV1/FVC, and PEF after 6 weeks. The BBT resulted in a significant increase in the FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF, and VC of the elderly smokers after 4 weeks and a significant decrease in the FVC, FEV1/FVC, and PEF after 6 weeks. In conclusion, An at home breathing rehabilitation program, in addition to balloon blowing, could increase the breathing performance of elderly people.

Purpose: Traumatic diaphragmatic injury (TDI) is no longer considered to be a rare condition in Korea. This study investigated differences in the prevalence of accompanying injuries and the prognosis in patients with traumatic diaphragmatic damage according to the mechanism of injury. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with TDI who were seen at a regional emergency medical center from January 2000 to December 2018. Among severe trauma patients with traumatic diaphragmatic damage, adults older than 18 years of age with a known mechanism of injury were included in this study. Surgery performed within 6 hours after the injury was sustained was defined as emergency surgery. We assessed the survival rate and likelihood of respiratory compromise according to the mechanism of injury. Results: In total, 103 patients were analyzed. The patients were categorized according to whether they had experienced a penetrating injury or a blunt injury. Thirty-five patients had sustained a penetrating injury, and traffic accidents were the most common cause of blunt injuries. The location of the injury did not show a statistically significant difference between these groups. Severity of TDI was more common in the blunt injury group than in the penetrating injury group, and was also more likely in patients with respiratory compromise. However, sex, the extent of damage, and the initial Glasgow coma scale score had no significant relationship with severity. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, TDI should be recognized and managed proactively in patients with blunt injury and/or respiratory compromise. Early recognition and implementation of an appropriate management strategy would improve patients’ prognosis. Multi-center, prospective studies are needed in the future.
