        Becoming Global Citizens through Global Literature: A Case Study of English Teacher Candidates in Korea

        This study investigates the ways in which English teacher candidates in Korea can cultivate global citizenship through reading and responding to global literature. While reading Kashmira Sheth’s Keeping Corner, a story of a young Indian girl navigating her life as a widow, they were invited to build their own intercultural understanding through participating in various critical literacy activities. Employing a qualitative research method, this study analyzes the texts that they produced during the class. The findings reveal that through self-reflexivity they were able to move beyond a surfacelevel conceptualization of culture usually represented as specific artifacts or traditional practices and then recognize the dynamic factors that play a role in constructing their cultural identities. In addition, they were able to make personal, local, and global relevance and significance and thereby identify some issues that local and global communities are currently facing. Although many raised their awareness on global citizenship by deconstructing the self-other dichotomy and recognizing multifaceted aspects of one’s lived experience, the study also identifies some challenges in unraveling deeply rooted ideologies and superiority, as well as apathy toward local and global relevance and significance in a one-semester course. Finally, this study calls for more integration of global citizenship education into teacher education programs.

        KJP : Brief Report; Percutaneous T2 and T3 Radiofrequency Sympathectomy for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Secondary to Brachial Plexus Injury: A Case Series

        Complex regional pain syndrome secondary to brachial plexus injury is often severe, debilitating and difficult to manage. Percuteneous radiofrequency sympathectomy is a relatively new technique, which has shown promising results in various chronic pain disorders. We present four consecutive patients with complex regional pain syndrome secondary to brachial plexus injury for more than 6 months duration, who had undergone percutaneous T2 and T3 radiofrequency sympathectomy after a diagnostic block. All four patients experienced minimal pain relief with conservative treatment and stellate ganglion blockade. An acceptable 6 month pain relief was achieved in all 4 patients where pain score remained less than 50% than that of initial score and all oral analgesics were able to be tapered down. There were no complications attributed to this procedure were reported. From this case series, percutaneous T2 and T3 radiofrequency sympathectomy might play a significant role in multi-modal approach of CRPS management. (Korean J Pain 2013; 26: 401-405)

      • Sulfur vacancy-induced reversible doping of transition metal disulfides via hydrazine treatment

        <P>Chemical doping of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) has drawn significant interest because of its applicability to the modification of electrical and optical properties of TMDCs. This is of fundamental and technological importance for high-efficiency electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we present a simple and facile route to reversible and controllable modulation of the electrical and optical properties of WS2 and MoS2 via hydrazine doping and sulfur annealing. Hydrazine treatment of WS2 improves the field-effect mobilities, on/off current ratios, and photoresponsivities of the devices. This is due to the surface charge transfer doping of WS2 and the sulfur vacancies formed by its reduction, which result in an n-type doping effect. The changes in the electrical and optical properties are fully recovered when the WS2 is annealed in an atmosphere of sulfur. This method for reversible modulation can be applied to other transition metal disulfides including MoS2, which may enable the fabrication of twodimensional electronic and optoelectronic devices with tunable properties and improved performance.</P>

        Can Definitions Contribute to Alternative Conceptions?: A Meta-Study Approach

        There has been disagreement on the importance of definitions in science education. Yager (1983) believes that one crisis in science education was due to the considerable emphasis upon the learning of definitions. Hobson (2004) disagrees with physics textbooks that do not provide general definition on energy. Some textbooks explain that "there is no completely satisfactory definition of energy" or they can only "struggle to define it." In general, imprecise definitions in textbooks (Bauman, 1992) and inaccuracies in definition provided by teachers (Galili & Lehavi, 2006) may cause alternative conceptions. Besides, there are at least four challenges in defining physical concepts: precision, circularity, context and completeness in knowledge. These definitional problems that have been discussed in The Feynman Lectures, may impede the learning of physical concepts. A meta-study approach is employed to examine about five hundreds of journal papers that may discuss definitions in physics, problems in defining physical concepts and how they may result in alternative conceptions. These journal papers are mainly selected from journals such as American Journal of Physics, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Physics Education, The Physics Teachers, and so on. There are also comparisons of definitions with definitions from textbooks, Dictionaries of Physics, and English Dictionaries. To understand the nature of alternative conception, Lee et al. (2010) have suggested a theoretical framework to describe the learning issues by synthesizing cognitive psychology and science education approaches. Taking it a step further, this study incorporates the challenges in semantics and epistemology, proposes that there are at least four variants of alternative conceptions. We may coin the term, ``alternative definitions``, to refer to the commonly available definitions, which have these four problems in defining physics concepts. Based on this study, alternative definitions may result in at least four variants of alternative conceptions. Note that these four definitional problems or challenges in definitions cannot be easily resolved. Educators should be cognizant of the four variants of alternative conceptions which can arise from alternative definitions. The concepts of alternative definitions can be useful and possibly generalized to science education and beyond.

        Heart failure as the first manifestation of renal cell carcinoma

        We report the rare case of a patient with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who initially presented to the hospital with symptoms of cardiac failure. Preoperative cardiac studies did not reveal any underlying ischemia. After resection of a large 14-cm left renal tumor, cardiac function was noted to improve dramatically. We discuss this case of concomitant RCC and nonischemic cardiomyopathy.

        New Results in Disturbance Decoupled Fault Reconstruction in Linear Uncertain Systems Using Two Sliding Mode Observers in Cascade

        This paper presents a disturbance decoupled fault reconstruction (DDFR) scheme using two sliding mode observers in cascade. Measurable signals from the first observer are found to be the output of a fictitious system that is driven by the fault and disturbances. Then the signals are fed into a second observer which will reconstruct the fault. Sufficient conditions which guarantee DDFR are investigated and presented in terms of the original system matrices, and they are found to be less conservative than if only one single observer is used; therefore DDFR can be achieved for a wider class of systems using two sliding mode observers. A simulation example validates the claims made in this paper.

        Genome Constitution and Classification Using Retrotransposon-Based Markers in the Orphan Crop Banana

        We have exploited the repetitive and dispersed nature of many long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposon families for characterizing genome constitutions and classifying cultivars of the genus Musa. Insertional polymorphisms of the elements were studied using seven published and two newly designed primers facing outwards from the LTRs and reverse transcriptase (RT) domain of the retrotransposon. The primers generated specific amplification patterns showing the universal applicability of this marker type. The Inter-Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) markers distinguished the A and B genomes of the banana species (Musa acuminata Colla and Musa balbisiana Colla) and between banana cultivars. The IRAP markers enabled phylogenetic analysis of 16 Malaysian banana cultivars and determination of the genome constitution of hybrid banana (AAB, ABB, AABB, and AAAB), and gave information about ancestral genotypes of the hybrids. In addition, the TRAP detected new retrotransposon insertions into the genome of tissue culture regenerants. This PCR-based IRAP assay is amenable to large-scale throughput demands in screening breeding populations and is applicable for any crop.

        Surgical Morphometry of C1 and C2 Vertebrae: A Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography Analysis of 180 Chinese, Indian, and Malay Patients

        Study Design: Clinical imaging study. Purpose: To study the surgical morphometry of C1 and C2 vertebrae in Chinese, Indian, and Malay patients. Overview of Literature: C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle screw fixation is gaining popularity. However, there is a lack of C1–C2 morphometric data for the Asian population. Methods: Computed tomography analysis of 180 subjects (60 subjects each belonging to Chinese, Indian, and Malay populations) using simulation software was performed. Length and angulations of C1 lateral mass (C1LM) and C2 pedicle (C2P) screws were assessed. Results: The predicted C1LM screw length was between 23.2 and 30.2 mm. The safe zone of trajectories was within 11.0°±7.7° laterally to 29.1°±6.2° medially in the axial plane and 37.0°±10.2° caudally to 20.9°±7.8° cephalically in the sagittal plane. The shortest and longest predicted C2P screw lengths were 22.1±2.8 mm and 28.5±3.2 mm, respectively. The safe trajectories were from 25.1° to 39.3° medially in the axial plane and 32.3° to 45.9° cephalically in the sagittal plane. Conclusions: C1LM screw length was 23–30 mm with the axial safe zone from 11° laterally to 29° medially and sagittal safe zone at 21° cephalically. C2P screw length was 22–28 mm with axial safe zone from 26° to 40° medially and sagittal safe zone from 32° to 46° cephalically. These data serve as an important reference for Chinese, Indian, and Malay populations during C1–C2 instrumentation.
