Carbon nanodots: recent advances in synthesis and applications

        Chauhan Dheeraj Singh,Quraishi M. A.,Verma Chandrabhan 한국탄소학회 2022 Carbon Letters Vol.32 No.7

Due to their fascinating properties, there is a rise in the critical consideration of carbon-based nanomaterials in a plethora of applications. Carbon nanomaterials, such as nanotubes, graphene, fullerenes, and nanodiamonds, have broad applicability and potential research prospects. In the past few years, the developments and consumption of still smaller nanomaterials, namely graphene quantum dots and carbon nanodots or carbon dots (CDs) have been explored. Since carbon as a component exhibits insignificant cytotoxicity and remarkable biocompatibility, CDs have found a wide scope of potential applications. Owing to their fascinating aspects, such as small size, biocompatibility, low toxic nature, environment-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, ease of chemical functionalization, derivatization and surface modification, and photoluminescence tenability, CDs have been widely acknowledged. CDs have found major prospects in the areas of catalysis, sensors, and optical and bio-related applications. CDs are generally synthesized by employing techniques of pyrolysis, laser ablation, arc discharge, electrochemical method; hydrothermal and solvothermal techniques; and microwave and ultrasonic irradiations. This review article presents a brief account of the major properties of CDs, and applications, with particular emphasis on the green and environment-friendly synthesis methodologies. An overview of the microwave and ultrasound irradiation-induced syntheses for the preparation of CDs is presented in the light of green chemistry principles. In addition, some of the green and environmentally benign precursors for the production of CDs are outlined. The most recent work on CDs is included in this review article.

Survey of Dicrocoelium dendriticum infection in imported Romani and local sheep (Ovis aries), and potential epidemiological role in Saudi Arabia

        Mutee Murshed,Saleh Al-Quraishy,Mohammed M Mares,Osama B. Mohammed,Hossam M. A. Aljawdah 한국축산학회 2022 한국축산학회지 Vol.64 No.6

The epidemiology of parasite infection in local and imported breeds is quite an essential topic in the meat industry and human health. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Dicrocoelium dendriticum in local sheep breeds (Naemi, Najdi, and Harri) and imported breeds from Romania (Romani breed) and the epidemiology of the infection in Saudi Arabia. Morphological description, the relationship between dicrocoeliasis and sex, age, and histological changes were also presented. A total of 6845 slaughtered sheep at Riyadh Automated slaughterhouse were investigated and followed up for 4 months between 2020–2021. It included 4,680 local breeds and 2,165 imported Romanian breeds. Fecal samples and livers and gallbladders from slaughtered animals were examined for apparent pathological lesions. The results indicated that the infection rate in slaughtered animals was 10.6% in imported Romani sheep and 0.9% in the local Naeimi breed. After identifying the parasite morphologically, negative results were obtained from examining feces, gallbladders, and livers of Najdi and Harry sheep breeds. The mean number of eggs per 20 μL/gallbladder was low (72.78 ± 17.8: 76.11 ± 5.07), medium (334.59 ± 90.6: 292.91 ± 26.63), and high (1113.2 ± 22.3: 1004 ± 143.4) in imported and Naeime sheep, respectively. Significant differences were found between gender and age (males and females were 3.67% and 6.31%; > 2 years 4.39%, 1–2 years 4.22%, and 1 year 3.53%) respectively. Histopathological lesions in the liver were more pronounced. Our survey confirmed the presence of D. dendriticum in imported Romani and local Naeimi sheep, and the potential role of imported sheep in the epidemiology of dicrocoeliasis in Saudi Arabia.

Parul Dohare,K.R. Ansari,M.A. Quraishi,I.B. Obot 한국공업화학회 2017 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.52 No.-

In the present work three new corrosion inhibitors namely ethyl 6-amino-3-methyl-4-(p-tolyl)-2,4-dihydropyrano[2,3,C]pyrazole-5-carboxylate (EPP-1), ethyl 6-amino-3-methyl-4(phenyl)-2,4-dihydro-pyrano[2,3,C]pyrazole-5-carboxylate (EPP-2), ethyl 6-amino-3-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-2,4-dihydro-pyrano[2,3,C]pyrazole-5-carboxylate (EPP-3) were prepared, characterized and their corrosion inhibitionproperties on mild steel were investigated using gravimetric, potentiodynamic polarization andelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The surface morphology of the mild steel was examinedusing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). EPP-1 exhibited highestefficiency of 98.8% at 100 mg/L. AFM and SEM studies confirmed the formation of adsorbedfilm on themetal surface. The inhibitors followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Density functional theory(DFT) was used to understand donor–acceptor relationship between inhibitors and metal. Theorientation and binding energy of inhibitor molecules were investigated using molecular dynamicsimulation (MD). A good relationship was obtained between theoretical and experimental results.

Larvicidal and pupicidal activities of Foeniculum vulgare essential oil, trans‐anethole and fenchone against house fly Musca domestica and their inhibitory effect on acetylcholinestrase

        Abdel‐Baki Abdel‐Azeem S.,Aboelhadid Shawky M.,Sokmen Atalay,Al‐Quraishy Saleh,Hassan Ahmed O.,Kamel Asmaa A. 한국곤충학회 2021 Entomological Research Vol.51 No.11

The present study was designed to evaluate the insecticidal activity of different concentrations of Foeniculum vulgare and two of its components, trans-anethole and fenchone, against the different stages of Musca domestica. The tested concentrations were applied through a residual film method and topical application on larvae and pupae respectively. Trans-anethole achieved the best results against larvae when compared with those of the fennel or fenchone with LC50 values of 0.58%, 1.57%, and 17.22%, respectively. Moreover, tans-anethole killed 100% of larvae at concentration of 2.5% and fennel achieved the same effect at concentration of 10%, meanwhile fenchone did not reach such an effect at any of the tested concentrations. At the concentration of 10%, fennel oil and trans-anethole induced morphological deformation in the dead larvae such as shrunk bodies with dark colored integument. Regarding the pupicidal activity, fennel oil showed percentage inhibition rate (PIR) of 100% at the concentration of 10% while the same effect was achieved by trans-anethole at concentration of 5%. On the contrary, fenchone did not show any pupicidal activity. Treatment of the third instar house fly larvae with LC5o of fennel oil, trans-anethole, and fenchone significantly inhibited the acetylcholinestrase (AchE) when compared with the control untreated larvae. Additionally, the glutathione-s-transferase (GST) and malondialdehyde (MDA) production significantly increased in the larvae treated with trans-anethole. The results of the present study indicate that the insecticidal activity of fennel oil was mainly attributed to the presence of trans-anethole as a major constituent.
