Interest in political socialisation, the process by which political knowledge, attitudes and beliefs are acquired, and the agencies through which it occurs, can be traced back to the beginnings of political theory. Much of Plato's Republic, was devoted to describing the proper training patterns of various 'classes' in his ideal state. Aristotle took it for granted that legislators should make the political socialisation of the young their major concern. To ensure stability of the constitution, which to Aristotle meant not the framework of government, but also a 'way of life', citizens had to be educated into the spirit of the constitution.
Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africa : Applying the ILA New Delhi Declaration of Principles
Phillips Christal,Kim Pan Suk 한국아프리카학회 2011 한국아프리카학회지 Vol.33 No.-
This paper will examine whether international sustainable development law, a field that promotes the collaboration and integration of multiple disciplines, can serve as an effective guide for improving development in sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, the paper will assess the International Law Association’s 2002 New Delhi Declaration as a framework for achieving sustainable development in the region. By recognizing the interconnection between ecological, economic, political and social systems, the Declaration’s principles may facilitate and encourage governments, policymakers, civil society, courts, and others to formulate a multi-dimensional and comprehensive development policy for the region, despite its limitations for solving corruption and other problems that have hindered development.

Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) based BrainComputer Interface (BCI) systems have grown in popularityin the last years, and has shown itself as a useful tool indeveloping portable and convenient BCI systems. Thepurpose of this review paper is to highlight the recentdevelopments, applications, and challenges that researchgroups have achieved in the field of fNIRS-BCI. We willshow how fNIRS can be paired with another modality (i.e. EEG, fTCD, etc.) to drastically improve classification accuracy. From there, we will discuss the recent achievements inclassification techniques researchers have had with fNIRS ora combined fNIRS modality. Finally, we will look at howfNIRS-BCI systems are used to enhance human-robotinteractions and assistive technologies. Throughout ourreview paper, we will note challenges groups have had withtheir studies, as to provide a framework for future researchtopics for the fNIRS-BCI community.
Park Tae-hwan v. The Korean Olympic Committee: The Breakdown of Sports Jurisprudence in Korea
Phillips, Joe,Lim, Suk-Jun The Korean Association of Arbitration Studies 2016 중재연구 Vol.26 No.3
Park Tae-hwan, the Korean Olympic gold medal swimmer, was suspended for eighteen months by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) in September 2014. Park completed his suspension in March 2016, but the Korea Olympic Committee (KOC), relying on its Article 5.6, then prohibited him from joining the national team for an additional three years for the same doping violation. The KOC's penalty exceeded that provided by the World Anti-Doping Code, which governs the Olympics and most international sports federations, and contravened well-established precedent from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The KOC, along with the Korea Swimming Federation, maintained the suspension until decisions by the Seoul Eastern District Court and CAS forced them to retract the penalty. We describe the sports regulations and arbitration decisions governing the Park case, how each side used the law to support their positions, the flaws in the KOC's legal analysis, and the case's resolutions by the Korean court and CAS. Finally, because this legal conflict has damaged the KOC's reputation, created uncertainty over the committee's doping penalties, and undercut the authority of the World Anti-Doping Code and the CAS in Korea, we recommend institutional changes in Korea's sports jurisprudence.

Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) has emerged as an important tool for testing large and complex structures with a focus on rate-dependent specimen behavior. Due to the real-time constraints, accurate dynamic control of servo-hydraulic actuators is required. These actuators are necessary to realize the desired displacements of the specimen, however they introduce unwanted dynamics into the RTHS loop. Model-based actuator control strategies are based on linearized models of the servo-hydraulic system, where the controller is taken as the model inverse to effectively cancel out the servo-hydraulic dynamics (i.e., model-based feedforward control). An accurate model of a servo-hydraulic system generally contains more poles than zeros, leading to an improper inverse (i.e., more zeros than poles). Rather than introduce additional poles to create a proper inverse controller, the higher order derivatives necessary for implementing the improper inverse can be calculated from available information. The backward-difference method is proposed as an alternative to discretize an improper continuous time model for use as a feedforward controller in RTHS. This method is flexible in that derivatives of any order can be explicitly calculated such that controllers can be developed for models of any order. Using model-based feedforward control with the backward-difference method, accurate actuator control and stable RTHS are demonstrated using a nine-story steel building model implemented with an MR damper.
Finding an International Footing: Enhancing Korea`s Power through Corporate Social Responsibility
( Phillips Joe ),( Suk Jun Lim ) 한국세계지역학회 2007 世界地域硏究論叢 Vol.25 No.2
South Korea is coming into its own on the world stage with significant economic power, increased regional influence, and a raised international profile. It should, where practical, avoid regional opposition to this growing footprint. We propose a "soft power" path rooted within the internationally-praised "corporate social responsibility" (CSR) movement. Korea`s global, and especially Asian, image is suffering because of the poor CSR performance by its small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) operating abroad. This negative presents an opportunity for Korea to enhance its country image, and, consequently, its soft power. Our paper first reviews the theoretical basis of soft power within the international relations and marketing fields. After empirically demonstrating how poor CSR has harmed Korea`s foreign image, and why its SMEs have especially weak CSR performance, we propose a solution set.

In Boethius's De Consolatione Philosophiae, Lady Philosophy assumes the roles of Socratic teacher and syncretic physician. While writing his work within the tradition of the philosophical lamentatio and consolatio, Boethius drew upon his knowledge of Greek and Roman medical theory in his presentation of the persona of Philosophy as doctor. Boethius employs the symptoms of lethargy, which were current among physicians of the time, in his description of the dejected narrator, and he assigns Lady Philosophy the role of spiritual physician. The symptoms that Lady Philosophy "reveals" in her patient are commensurate with his Platonic and spiritual exile from the summum bonum, or God. Lady Philosophy's therapeutic method, that seeks to discover the wound and to treat it accordingly with "gentler" and "stronger" remedies, mirrors the ancient physician's approach to acclimate patients to medicines of increasing strength. Lady Philosophy's therapeutic method successfully employs the methods advocated by such writers as Galen and Caelius Aurelianus with the purpose of restoring the patient to health in both body and soul.
