        Neutron spectroscopy using pure LaCl<sub>3</sub> crystal and the dependence of pulse shape discrimination on Ce-doped concentrations

        We report a simple technique for direct neutron spectroscopy using pure LaCl<sub>3</sub> crystals. Pure LaCl<sub>3</sub> crystals exhibit considerably better pulse shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities with relatively good energy resolution as compared with Ce-doped LaCl<sub>3</sub> crystals. Single crystals of pure and Ce-doped LaCl<sub>3</sub> were grown using an inhouse-developed Bridgman furnace. PSD capabilities of these crystals were investigated using <sup>241</sup>Am and <sup>137</sup>Cs sources. Fast neutron detection was tested using a<sup>252</sup>Cf source and three separate bands corresponding to electron, proton, and alpha were observed. The proton band induced by the <sup>35</sup>Cl(n,p)<sup>35</sup>S reaction can be used for direct neutron spectroscopy because proton energy is proportional to incident neutron energy. Owing to good scintillation performance and excellent PSD capabilities, pure LaCl<sub>3</sub> is a promising candidate for space detectors and other applications that necessitate gamma/fast neutron discrimination capability.

        CsI:Tl 단결정의 광특성 및 펄스 구별 최적화 연구

        Scintillators are widely used in and studied for particle physics, nuclear physics and astroparticle physics detection. In this study, we estimated the scintillation properties of a CsI:Tl crystal and determined the best method to discriminate α-particles, which is an important component of the cosmic-ray background, from γ-rays. We studied the scintillation properties of the CsI:Tl crystal and the pulse shape discrimination capability by using an 241Am α-particle source and a 137Cs-γ-ray source. For the pulse shape discrimination study, we used these well-known methods: the mean time method, charge integration method and optimum filter method. To determine which method was best for discrimination, we calculated the FOM value for each method under various conditions. Consequently, the optimum filter method was found to give the best value of the FOM. If we use the optimum filter method when we are observing -rays from the sky, we can distinguish the background of ion particles, such as α-particles, from γ-rays. 섬광단결정은 입자 물리, 핵물리 및 우주선 검출 분야에서 많이 사용되고 연구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는우주에서 오는 감마선을 관측하기 위해 연구되고 있는 CsI:Tl 단결정의 광특성을 알아보고 감마선과주요한 백그라운드 중 하나인 알파입자를 효과적으로 구별하기 위한 방법을 찾아보았다. 이를 위해 단결정샘플에 알파입자와 감마선을 입사하여 광특성 조사 및 펄스 모양 분석 연구를 진행하였다. 펄스 모양 분석연구에는 평균시간법(mean time method), 전하적분법(charge integration method) 및 최적필터링법(optimum filter method)의 세 방법을 이용하였다. 구별이 가장 잘 되는 조건 및 방법을 찾기 위해 조건과방법을 변화시키며 FOM 값을 측정하였다. 그 결과 최적필터링법이 가장 좋은 방법으로 나타났다. 따라서우주에서 감마선을 관측할 때 최적필터링법을 이용한다면 알파입자 등 이온입자의 백그라운드를 구별해낼수 있을 것이다.

        Measuring and unfolding fast neutron spectra using solution-grown trans-stilbene scintillation detector

        We propose an overall procedure for measuring and unfolding fast neutron spectra using a trans-stilbene scintillation detector. Detector characterization was described, including the information on energy calibration, detector resolution, and nonproportionality response. The digital charge comparison method was used for the investigation of neutron-gamma Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD). A pair of values of 600 ns pulse width and 24 ns delay time was found as the optimized conditions for PSD. A fitting technique was introduced to increase the trans-stilbene Proton Response Function (PRF) by 28% based on comparison of the simulated and experimental electron-equivalent distributions by the Cf-252 source. The detector response matrix was constructed by Monte-Carlo simulation and the spectrum unfolding was implemented using the iterative Bayesian method. The unfolding of simulated and measured spectra of Cf-252 and AmBe neutron sources indicates reliable, stable and no-bias results. The unfolding technique was also validated by the measured cosmic-ray induced neutron flux. Our approach is promising for fast neutron detection and spectroscopy.

        Radio-Photoluminescence of Silver-Doped Phosphate Glass

        Commercial silver-doped phosphate glass is a promising material for a solid-state radiophotoluminescent (RPL) dosimeter. It has several promising characteristics, such as RPL intensity linearity with the ionizing irradiation dose, data accumulation, no fading, and measurement repeatability. It can be used as personal, environmental, and clinical dosimeter as well. The objective of this study was to synthesize silver-doped phosphate glass in the laboratory and compare its RPL properties with those of a commercial GD-352M glass. The emission and the excitation properties of the synthesized and commercial glasses were measured before and after X-ray irradiation. An intense orange emission peak at 600 nm and an excitation peak at 320 nm were measured for the synthesized glass after X-ray irradiation. The radiative lifetime of the synthesized glass had two decay components for the orange Radio-Photoluminescence
