De novo malignancy after liver transplantation

        Peng Ji Gao,Jie Gao,Zhao Li,Zhi Ping Hu,Ji Ye Zhu 대한외과학회 2015 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.88 No.4

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of de novo malignancy after liver transplantation (LT) and compare with those among the general Chinese population. Methods: A total of 466 patients who had a minimum follow-up time of 6 months were enrolled in the study. All data of medical records and follow up were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The incidence rate of de novo malignancy was 3.0% (14 in 466 patients). The median elapsed time from transplant to the diagnosis of de novo malignancy was 42 months (range, 6 to 106 months). The cumulative risk for development of de novo malignancy was 1.6%, 2.7%, and 8.2% at 3, 5 and 10 years after LT, respectively. The patients were all male. The types of de novo tumors included digestive system tumor (8 in 14), lung cancer (2 in 14), urologic neoplasm (2 in 14), and hematologic malignant tumor (2 in 14). Over a mean follow-up of 24 months after diagnosis of de novo malignancy, 7 patients (50.0%) died; the overall 5-year patient survival rate was 54.5%. The relative risk of malignancy following LT was 9.5 folds higher than the general Chinese population. Conclusion: The relative risk of malignancy following LT was much higher than the general Chinese population. Digestive system tumor is the most common type of de novo malignancy after LT in China.

Fracture behavior of fly ash concrete containing silica fume

        Peng Zhang,Ji-Xiang Gao,Xiao-Bing Dai,Tian-Hang Zhang,Juan Wang 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.59 No.2

Effect of silica fume on fresh properties, compressive strength at 28 days and fracture behavior of fly ash concrete composite were studied in this paper. Test results indicated that the fluidity and flowability of fly ash concrete composites decreased and fly ash concrete composite are more cohesive and appear to be sticky with the addition of silica fume. Addition of silica fume was very effective in improving the compressive strength at 28 days of fly ash concrete composite, and the compressive strength of fly ash concrete composite has a trend of increase with the increase of silica fume content. Results also indicated that all the fracture parameters of effective crack length, fracture toughness, fracture energy, the critical crack opening displacement and the maximum crack opening displacement of fly ash concrete composite decreased with the addition of silica fume. When the content of silica fume increased from 3% to 12%, these fracture parameters decreased gradually with the increase of silica fume content. Furthermore, silica fume had great effect on the relational curves of the three-point bending beam specimen. As the silica fume content increased from 3% to 12%, the areas surrounded by the three relational curves and the axes were becoming smaller and smaller, which indicated that the capability of concrete composite containing fly ash to resist crack propagation was becoming weaker and weaker.

A20 ameliorates disc degeneration by suppressing mTOR/BNIP3 axis-mediated mitophagy

        Peng Xin,Zhang Cong,Gao Jia-Wei,Wang Feng,Bao Jun-Ping,Zhou Zhi-Min,Sun Rui,Ji Hang-Yu,VLF Cabral,Wu Xiao-Tao 한국유전학회 2023 Genes & Genomics Vol.45 No.5

Background The pathological mechanism of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is an unanswered question that we are committed to exploring. A20 is an anti-inflammatory protein of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells and plays a protective role in intervertebral disc degeneration. Objective This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanism by which A20 attenuates disc degeneration. Methods The proteins of interest were measured by immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, ELISA assay, and immunohistochemical technique to conduct related experiments. Immunofluorescence assays and mitochondrial membrane potential (JC-1) were used to assess mitophagy and mitochondrial fitness, respectively. Results Here, we demonstrated that A20 promoted mitophagy, attenuated pyroptosis, and inhibited the degradation of the extracellular matrix, consequently significantly ameliorating disc degeneration. Mechanistically, A20 reduces pyroptosis and further suppresses cellular mTOR activity. On the one hand, A20-induced mTOR inhibition triggers BNIP3-mediated mitophagy to ensure mitochondrial fitness under LPS stimulation, as a result of mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction induced by LPS. On the other hand, A20-induced mTOR inhibition reduces the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the generation of Mitochondrial ROS. Conclusion The study revealed that A20 promotes BNIP3-mediated mitophagy by suppressing mTOR pathway activation against LPS-induced pyroptosis.

Effect of a Mangosteen Dietary Supplement on Human Immune Function: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

        Yu-Ping Tang,Peng-Gao Li,Miwako Kondo,Hong-Ping Ji,Yan Kou,Boxin Ou 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.4

The effect of a mangosteen product containing multivitamins and essential minerals was tested on immune function and well-being in healthy adults. A randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 59 healthy human subjects (40–60 years old). Changes from baseline immune function were measured after a 30-day consumption of the mangosteen product and the placebo. The subjects' self-appraisal of their health status was also surveyed. A xanthone-rich mangosteen product intake increased mean values for peripheral T-helper cell frequency (P=.020) and reduced the serum C-reactive protein concentration (P=.014). Increases in peripheral CD4/CD8 double-positive (DP) T-cell frequency and serum complement C3, C4, and interleukin (IL)-1α concentrations were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the placebo group (DP, P=.038; C3, P=.017; C4, P=.031; IL-1α, P=.006). At the end of study, serum IL-1α and IL-1β concentrations in the study group were significantly higher than that in the placebo group (IL-1α, P=.033; IL-1β, P=.04). Furthermore, more participants in the experimental group reported greatly improved overall health status compared with participants receiving placebo (P=.001). The results indicated that the intake of an antioxidant-rich product significantly enhanced immune responses and improved the subject's self-appraisal on his or her overall health status.

Extrusion of porous silicon nitride using different binders

        Jian-Feng Yang,Guang-Peng Jiang,Ji-Qiang Gao 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2010 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.11 No.1

Porous silicon nitride ceramics were prepared using an extrusion process. Starch and thermoset phenol-formaldehyde resin were used as binders. The effect of the different binders on the microstructure and mechanical strength of the porous silicon nitride were investigated in detail. It is shown that the microstructure was more uniform when phenol-formaldehyde resin was used as the binder. In contrast, the pore size distribution was bimodal when starch was used. Furthermore, the flexural strength of porous Si3N4 using resin as the binder was higher than that using the starch.

Corrosion behavior and creepage discharze character for machinable AlN/h-BN ceramic composites

        Hai-yun Jin,Bo He,Nai-kui Gao,Zong-ren Peng,Ji-qiang Gao 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2008 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.9 No.5

AlN particles coated with nano-BN were synthesized. The AlN/BN ceramic composites were sintered by Plasma Active Sintering (PAS). Because the nano-BN crystals were homogeneously dispersed around the AlN grains of the matrix, the chemical corrosion resistance of AlN/nano-sized h-BN ceramic composites was higher than that of AlN/micro-sized h-BN ceramic composites and monolithic AlN ceramics. Due to the better hydrophobic property of h-BN, the AlN/BN composites had a better hydrophobic property than the monolithic AlN ceramic, at the same time, because of the homogeneous dispersion of the nano-BN, the creepage discharze voltage of AlN/nano-sized BN composites was the highest. Fabrication and properties of machinable SiC/h-BN Nano-composites

        Hai-yun Jin,Nai-kui Gao,Zong-ren Peng,Guan-jun Qiao,Ji-qiang Gao 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2008 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.9 No.6

SiC/BN ceramic nano-composites powders were synthesized by an in-situ recation method and the composites were sintered by hot pressing in a N2 atmosphere. The microstructure, secondary phase and grain boundaries were characterized using a range of analytical techniques including TEM, SEM and XRD. The mechanical properties were determined, when the BN content is increaed because the nano-sized h-BN crystals were homogeneously dispersed around the SiC grains of the matrix, the fracture strength of the nano-composites decreased more slowly than that of the SiC/h-BN micro-composites, but the hardness of the composites decreased sharply and the machinability properites were improved noticeably.
