A compact and high-rejection ultra-wideband (UWB) microstrip band-pass flter is proposed by using the multi-mode resonator (MMR) technique. The proposed MMR structure is realized by three open stubs-loaded and two short stubs-loaded and a high impedance microstrip line. Five modes, including two odd modes and three even modes could be designed within the UWB band. By resizing the dimensions of the stubs, the resonant modes of the MMR structure are arranged wider bandpass which the passband selectivity with this confguration signifcantly improved. By this confguration, the even modes can be fexibly controlled, while the odd modes remain the same. The proposed flter has a passband covers 4.1–10.6 GHz and its measured 3 dB fractional bandwidth is about 89%. In order to validate the performance of the proposed technique, the designed UWB band-pass flter is fabricated and the experimental verifcation is provided. A good agreement has been found between simulation and measurement’s results. To our knowledge, the size of the proposed UWB flter is small in comparison with known similar flters.

A facile, green, efficient and environment-friendly protocol for the synthesis of 14-aryl- or alkyl-14Hdibenzo[a,j]xanthene, 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthene and 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthene-11-one have been developed by one-pot condensation of various aldehydes with (i) ${\beta}$-naphthol (ii) cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and (iii) ${\beta}$-naphthol and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, in the presence of 1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-triazinetrion (trichloroisocyanuric acid, TCCA) as catalyst under solvent-free conditions. The present approach offers the advantages of clean reaction, simple methodology, short reaction time, easy purification, and economic availability of the catalyst.

Nutritional Care in Iranian Intensive Care Units

Intensive care units (ICUs) provides intensive treatment medicine to avoid complications such as malnutrition, infection and even death. As very little is currently known about the nutritional practices in Iranian ICUs, this study attempted to assess the various aspects of current nutrition support practices in Iranian ICUs. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 150 critically ill patients at 18 ICUs in 12 hospitals located in 2 provinces of Iran from February 2015 to March 2016. Data were collected through interview with supervisors of ICUs, medical record reviews and direct observation of patients during feeding. Our study showed that hospital-prepared enteral tube feeding formulas are the main formulas used in Iranian hospitals. None of the dietitians worked exclusively an ICU and only 30% of patients received diet counselling. Regular monitoring of nutritional status, daily energy and protein intake were not recorded in any of the participating ICUs. Patients were not monitored for anthropometric measurements such as mid-arm circumference (MAC) and electrolyte status. The nasogastric tube was not switched to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or jejunostomy (PEG/PEGJ) in approximately 85% of patients receiving long-term enteral nutrition (EN) support. Our findings demonstrated that the quality of nutritional care was inappropriate in Iranian ICUs and improvement of nutritional care services within Iranian ICUs is necessary.

A new and efficient method for the preparation of substituted 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones via Biginelli synthesis using catalytic amounts of 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin is presented. Short reaction times, easy work-up, high yields of products and stability, easy-handling, non-toxicity and cheapness of the catalyst are noteworthy advantages of the present work.

Influences of the magnetic field on 5, 10 and 15 wt% (1.5, 3 and 4.5 M) HCl solution behaviour, which has widespread applications in petroleum well acidizing, were investigated in various conditions. Differences in the pH of magnetized hydrochloric acid compared to that of normal hydrochloric acid were measured. Taguchi design of experimental (DoE) method were used to model effects of the magnetic field intensity, concentration, velocity and temperature of acid in addition to the elapsed time. The experimental results showed that the magnetic field decreases [H+] concentration of hydrochloric acid up to 42% after magnetization. Increasing the magnetic field intensity (with 28% contribution), concentration (with 42% contribution), and velocity of acid increases the effect of magnetic treatment. The results also demonstrated that the acid magnetization wasnot influenced by the fluid velocity and heating. It was also displayed that the acid preserves its magnetic memory during time. The optimum combination of factors with respect to the highest change of [H+] concentration was obtained as an acid concentration of 10% and an applied magnetic field of 4,300 Gauss. Due to the reduction of HCl reaction rate under the magnetization process, it can be proposed that the magnetized HCl is a cost effective and reliable alternative retarder in the matrix acidizing of hydrocarbon (crude oil and natural gas) wells.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a significant target in oil engineering, and in this regard nanoparticle suspension flooding remains a challenging task. Therefore, in this study, suitable magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized for injection into a porous medium and then characterized. In addition, the utility of the synthesized nanoparticles for EOR with and without the application of a magnetic field was studied through a core flooding experiment. The oil recovery increased when a magnetic field was applied in comparison to without such an application owing to a better distribution and the utility of the magnetic nanoparticles in creating a column toward the direction of the magnetic field in the pore channels, which acts like a piston and can sweep the oil and thereby increase production.
