Performance-based design of seismic isolated buildings considering multiple performance objectives
Morgan, Troy A.,Mahin, Stephen A. Techno-Press 2008 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.4 No.5
In the past 20 years, seismic isolation has see a variety of applications in design of structures to mitigate seismic hazard. In particular, isolation has been seen as a means of achieving enhanced seismic performance objectives, such as those for hospitals, critical emergency response facilities, mass electronic data storage centers, and similar buildings whose functionality following a major seismic event is either critical to the public welfare or the financial solvency of an organization. While achieving these enhanced performance objectives is a natural (and oftentimes requisite) application of seismic isolation, little attention has been given to the extension of current design practice to isolated buildings which may have more conventional performance objectives. The development of a rational design methodology for isolated buildings requires thorough investigation of the behavior of isolated structures subjected to seismic input of various recurrence intervals, and which are designed to remain elastic only under frequent events. This paper summarizes these investigations, and proposed a consistent probabilistic framework within which any combination of performance objectives may be met. Analytical simulations are presented, the results are summarized. The intent of this work is to allow a building owner to make informed decisions regarding tradeoffs between superstructure performance (drifts, accelerations) and isolation system performance. Within this framework, it is possible to realize the benefits of designing isolated buildings for which the design criteria allows consideration of multiple performance goals.

Grief is an individual and natural response to a loss, and every person will integrate the death into their life, in their own way. Approximately one-third of bereaved individuals will have enough social support from family, friends and the community at large so that no additional help will be sought. Approximately one-third will require and seek aid from mutual help organizations; others need the support of grief counselling, that is, facilitation with "uncomplicated, or normal, grief to a healthy compoleting of the tasks of grieving within a reasonable time frame," and a small minoity require grief therapy "those specialized techniques ... what are used to help people with abnormal or complicate reactions."
Reproductive Toxicity Evaluation of Pestban Insecticide Exposure in Male and Female Rats
Morgan, Ashraf M.,El-Aty, A.M. Abd Korean Society of ToxicologyKorea Environmental Mu 2008 Toxicological Research Vol.25 No.3
Sexually mature male and female rats were orally intubated with the organophosphorus insecticide, Pestban at a daily dosage of 7.45 or 3.72 mg/kg bwt, equivalent to 1/20 and 1/40 $LD_{50}$, respectively. Male rats were exposed for 70 days, while the female rats were exposed for 14 days, premating, during mating and throughout the whole length of gestation and lactation periods till weaning. The results showed depressed acetylcholinesterase(AChE) activity in the brain of parents, fetuses and their placentae in a dose-dependent manner. The fertility was significantly reduced with increasing the dose in both treated groups, with more pronounced suppressive effects in the male treated group. The number of implantation sites and viable fetuses were significantly reduced in pregnant females of both treated groups. However, the number of resorptions, dead fetuses, and pre-and postimplantation losses were significantly increased. The incidence of resorptions was more pronounced in treated female compared to male group and was dose dependant. The behavioral responses as well as fetal survival and viability indices were altered in both treated groups during the lactation period. The incidence of these effects was more pronounced in the treated female group and occurred in a dose-related manner. The recorded morphological, visceral, and skeletal anomalies were significantly increased with increasing the dose in fetuses of both treated groups, with more pronounced effects on fetuses of treated females. In conclusion, the exposure of adult male and female rats to Pestban would cause adverse effects on fertility and reproduction.

This study was carried out to measure the concentration of heavy metals (Pb, Mn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cu) in water and Bolti fish (Tilapia nilotica) samples collected from Rasheed branch of River Nile, north of El-Giza Governorate, Egypt by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The investigated districts through which the branch passes include El-Manashi, Gezzaya, El Katta, Abo Ghaleb and Wardan. Based on WHO and FAO safety reference standards, the results of the current study showed that water and fish tissues were found to contain heavy metals at significantly variable concentration levels among the investigated districts. They were polluted with respect to all the metals tested at Gezzaya district. However, the levels of analyzed metals in water and fish tissues were found lower than legal limits in other districts. The heavy metals showed differential bioaccumulation in fish tissues of the different districts as the accumulation pattern (as total heavy metal residues) was district dependant as follow: Gezzaya > Wardan > El Katta > Abo Ghaleb > El Manashi.

How have national institutions and committees from EU member states positioned themselves regarding the use of gene editing in agriculture? To answer this question, this article examines and compares 11 official reports and position statements from 7 European countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Denmark, and Sweden. The various kinds of issues that are addressed and arguments that are made in the reports are coded into large categories (innovation, risk, ethics, legislation, etc.) and are analyzed. The paper discusses the main similarities and differences in terms of how the governance of gene editing is problematized. In doing so, the paper aims to provide a useful resource to broaden debates on the future regulation of gene editing within and beyond Europe.
An Unusual Recurrent Bile Leak Following High Grade Liver Trauma
Morgan E Jones,Ee Jun Ban,Charles H. C. Pilgrim 대한외상중환자외과학회 2021 Journal of Acute Care Surgery Vol.11 No.3
Non-operative management of blunt liver injury has been demonstrated as a safe and effective treatment for most grades of injury. As the severity of liver injury increases, so does the risk of complications. A 21-year-old male was brought to the trauma center following a high speed motorbike accident. He underwent a laparotomy and angioembolization for a Grade 4 liver injury. A biloma was diagnosed on Day 18 post injury, and he underwent Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography and biliary stenting which were unsuccessful. There were 2 re-admissions for infected perihepatic collections. In this case, an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography was not a helpful procedure due to a disconnected liver segment, and morbidity occurred due to instrumentation of the biliary tree (the likely cause of infected biloma). Hepatic resection should be considered for patients who fail non-operative management. Further assessment of efficacy using a larger dataset for analysis is required.
A New Flavonol Glycoside from the Leaves of Boscia senegalensis
Morgan, Abubaker M.A.,Kim, Jang Hoon,Kim, Sang Kyum,Lim, Chi-Hwan,Kim, Young Ho Korean Chemical Society 2014 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.35 No.12
Detailed chemical investigation of Boscia senegalensis (Per) Lam. ex Poir. led to the isolation of one new flavonol glycoside, rhamnocitrin-3-O-${\beta}$-$\small{D}$-(6"-O-E-feruloyl)-glucopyranoside named bosenegaloside A (1), with seven known compounds, rhamnocitrin-3-O-${\beta}$-$\small{D}$-(6"-O-E-p-coumaroyl)-glucopyranoside (2), rhamnocitrin-3-O-${\beta}$-$\small{D}$-glucopyranoside (3), 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenol-${\beta}$-$\small{D}$-glucopyrinoside (4), lasianthionoside A (5), 3,7-dimethyl-1-octene-3,6,7-triol-6-O-${\beta}$-$\small{D}$-glucopyranoside (6), syringin (7), and austroside B (8). The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated from spectroscopic data and by comparison of these data with previously published results. The inhibitory activity of the isolated compounds on soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) was assessed. Compounds 1-3 potently inhibited sEH activity with $IC_{50}$ values of $12.8{\pm}0.5$, $18.4{\pm}0.2$, and $11.3{\pm}0.9{\mu}M$, respectively.
